Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Question for the parents: I’m coming home in 8 days after not having seen my parents since August. I’m trying to figure out a gift to get my parents as a sort of thank you for all that you’ve done. Is it considered tacky to get my parents something from the campus bookstore, if neither of them attended my college (although my dad did graduate from its law school)?

No, not at all. I love my college hoody sweatshirt from my son’s school! I wear it with pride.

Aww that’s sweet. Anything…coffee mug, like that?

I say YES! Get them anything from school… sweatshirt, mug, or even a book about the school with pictures, or a calendar, or anything. What a thoughtful idea.

whenwhen: No your parents will love it, trust me. I think my daughter bought us presents at the drugstore using her leftover meal plan money. Which is great!!

I have not posted in awhile but thought I would give an update that my daughter is officially finished with her first semester and we are really excited about her grades - especially in math. One math course down, one to go. phew.

PinotNoir, I think you meant to ask me not Creekland about my S having a late final. My S is done after Chem on Tues but he checked with friends to see who was hanging out till the end of school and decided to stay and take the Mybushome bus that leaves SAT morning to come home.

If he gets restless, I probably can find a one way flight home depending on how heavy it snows. The weather report has snow for Wed-Fri at the moment.

My husband is driving him back in Jan.

whenwhen- definitely pick them up something at the convienice store. D brought both her dad and I Tshirts last night and an ornament for the Christmas tree. We loved getting the gifts using the some of the dining dollars…

whenhen: Ditto what the other parents are saying re: gift from school – not tacky at all.

I’m just popping in to say: I AM SO FREAKING GLAD NOT TO BE ON PINS AND NEEDLES WAITING TO HEAR ABOUT EARLY DECISION. And, honestly, I’m not that happy hearing about a friend’s son who got into Brown ED today…with legacy leg up. I think about how disappointing it was for my D not getting into Haverford ED (this was before I joined College Confidential so I may not have mentioned that trauma). Things totally worked out and in all sorts of ways UVM may in fact be a better fit than Haverford would have been. D is rocking the opportunities there every which way and is flourishing. It just sucks that admissions aren’t a level playing field. All best to everybody!

Thanks for the confirmation! Now to figure out what size clothing my parents wear…

MommyMommy- I’m with you on being relieved to not be worrying about college decisions this year. I’ll be in that boat again next year though! I also firmly believe that kids end up where they are supposed to be.

whenhen- I know you already got confirmation, but you can add me to the “yes” list  Maybe you can find people about the size of your parents and ask?

I’m celebrating a personal success. I have accepted a new job. It’s exactly the type of opportunity I’ve been hoping for, with a company I should be happy with until I can retire. I’m getting a 21% raise and a sign on bonus. I’ve been in grad school for 3 years and have 5 quarters to go, but it is paying for itself already. Happy holidays to me  I just hope I don’t lose the whole raise to a higher EFC… I could use some of it myself!

Yeah, my guy is done with finals on Wednesday, so is flying out Thursday. I’m hoping the snow isn’t bad there - or here. The weatherman this morning said we could end up with snow here that week. It would figure… no snow up till now, then snow on the day we need to go to the airport (our area doesn’t deal with snow well).

I’m hoping they change the forecast to nice - or at worst, rainy - weather.

Kudos for the new job BarnardMom!

whenhen – not tacky at all. Au contraire. It’s traditional.

I’ve texted my D several times reminding her to hit the campus bookstore for Christmas gifts before she comes home. I’ll be devastated if I don’t get a Cal mug. ;)

kudos to 2016 Barnardmom!

Thanks, I’m bursting with excitement but not ready to give notice at work yet so I have to be really careful who I tell. I figure I’m anonymous enough here…lol.

Yay! Congrats to 2016BarnardMom!

And whenhen, we are now sporting tons of gear from DS school. We have coffee mugs, totebags, scarves, hats and plenty of things that don’t require guessing about size.

Congrats to Bernardsmom.

Happiness is watching the Boss on the 121212 concert with D2 at home. We recorded it because I was on a business dinner. We are watching Bruce singing Born to Run. D2 loves him as much as I do.

whenhen, I put an ornament from older D’s college on the Christmas tree earlier this week, and my H uses the coffee mug every day. Both are prior Christmas gifts.

agree with the advice to whenhen!

Lakemom - it was you! How has your S been liking UR?

It’s a requirement for my guys that they purchase a school ornament for our tree their freshman year. Each year we add one ornament and it’s supposed to have meaning based upon something big (“good” big) that happened that year. I can’t think of anything “bigger.”

I can also wear sweatshirts to school on Fridays and often do when the weather is appropriate. Sometimes we ever have college T-shirt day (and the staff is included). A lunch bag would work too. I don’t have one of those yet from a college, but some of my colleagues do.

And that’s just for work. For everyday the sweatshirt also gets a bit of use in the winter.

He loves it, PinotNoir. Feels it is the right school for him. We are so pleased.

Thanks for asking.
