Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Doesn’t a Caribbean vacation call for a new wardrobe??!! ;)

oldfort - we had the opposite problem. My daughter has never taken her passport to school, I don’t trust her with it! So when we decided at the last minute to join my husband on his business trip to London right at the start of her break I had to overnight it to her. She flew from Chicago while we flew from NY. I guess that is easier than your situation but I was still unhappy until she called to say she got it.

Of course to prove my point of not trusting her with it, she lost it somewhere between the airport and our hotel. I had a copy of it but left it home so I called my neighbor and asked her to get it, scan it, and email it to us. Called the Embassy, made an appointment, started gathering all the info they needed. We wound up taking a car service somewhere using the same guy who picked her up at the airport and when we got into his car he hands me her passport! It fell out of her pocket (really, your pocket, not your backpack?!) onto the seat in his car. This was two days earlier, why didn’t you call us? He said he didn’t know how to contact us. But my husbands office hired you, couldn’t you have found that out, called the office and given her name? Wow, I was not happy with my daughter or the driver! Daughter is still not getting the passport for school.

Actually, no, he’s been having dreams about it… esp that first night.

My guy has control of his passport, though we have a copy of it here. He told me on the phone he’s bringing it home with him just in case we head to Canada or somewhere (definitely no finances for overseas at this point). I hadn’t even thought about it… I’m guessing since there are a fair number of international students around him that it’s fairly high on the “taking” list there as they plan to disperse.

amtc - you can’t win either way. I am rethinking about letting her take her passport back up to school. To be fair, I did spring this on her last minute.

D2 is going have to borrow some clothes from her sister. I am looking forward to it. I came from having sunshine almost everyday for 2 years, the dreary, dark NE is getting to me a bit.

Congrats 1012Mom! By the way, which semester is D! taking overseas? Is she a junior?

Old Fort- that is great that the University would fed ex the passport. One of D’s friends forgot her bowl game ticket in her room. Housing would not help her out she had to drive back to the dorm.

It just doesn’t feel right to be doing the Christmas cookies without my girlie here to help. I’m missing her more today than I have since the weekend we dropped her off at Barnard. Shed a tear or two, even. She’s been helping me do this since she was three. It isn’t fun, doing it alone :(

Hang in there 2016BarnardMom. Maybe you could do another batch when she gets home.

oldfort, don’t know where your daughter is in school but I wish I had gotten S a passport card at the same time we did his last passport as a passport card can get you into Canada and Mexico. Not sure about the Caribbean. You can still apply for one but you have to get the photos, fill out the app and pay, of course, more money since it is like a separate application then.

Hey everyone, just caught up with the thread. D is home, was excited to get a holiday part time job, has been spending time with high school friends, grades are not yet all in, but there was rejoicing over a 4.0 in chemistry. Very best of luck to all students still in finals. Hope Creekland’s car situation works out as well as possible. Happy vacation wishes to oldfort. I’m happy that D is instate so her passport does not need to go to college.

Christmas cookies - I’ve been stalling making the cookies waiting for S1 to return. Hope he still wants to make them as S2 has been waiting patiently. I would be very disappointed if S1 didn’t want to make them as it has been a tradition since they were toddlers!

Finals week, then DD returns home Friday. Hopeful that this is a busy week at the office to make things hurry up!

D came home on Friday just in time for DH’s work party that we hosted. Her BFF also came home and spent the night here last night. It was so nice to hear them laughing and being silly. They had a tough two weeks studying for finals and they deserve this down time.

I’m giving my notice at work tomorrow and I’m nervous. About 50% of the time, they walk people out on the spot and give them two weeks pay. I’m giving more than 3 weeks notice because no managers are going to be there at the 2 week mark. Also, they said I might need to travel to Boston in mid-January to take over the work of someone they might be firing. I feel like I need to let them know that I won’t be working there at that time.

I hope they don’t send me home… I need that third week of pay!

Sent 3 texts to S yesterday, two in response to his, one Good luck on Bio Final! But didn’t get any response from him. Thought that was sort of weird but figured he was busy and didn’t want to be a Black Hawk. So at 12:30 here he texts and tells me about his final, I answer and at 5:30 I get a plaintive text: “Why aren’t you answering my texts” text! It turns out that he hasn’t seen any of our texts since Friday and thought we were ignoring him! Poor boy! I can’t figure out why they weren’t getting through, now it seems fine. He’s flying across the country by himself for the first time on Thursday, I hope the connection doesn’t fail then!

^^^ So what did he think of the Bio final? We haven’t heard from middle son and I really hesitate to bug him during finals… There should be two left, then he’s coming home!

@2016BarnardMom-Good Luck to you today!!! (So jealous-wish I was putting in my 2 week notice)!

Keep us posted on how it goes…

D has her last final this morning (she’s writing it now) and comes home this evening. I’m SO excited!

D is on her way home now! Waiting for the public transport to the airport, missed the previous train. Might be a bit rushed if the airport lines are crowded, but I think she will be ok.

Safe travels to all the “kids” who still have to come home this week.

DS arrived home late this weekend and is back full days at work, starting at 7:30AM. He might have mentioned that he is actually getting up earlier during break than he does during school. Hopefully the paycheck will help him come to terms with the early hour. All three adults are on different work schedules, along with younger DD’s activities, so managing the car situation is proving tricky!

I hope it went smoothly, Barnardmom!

PNWedwonk - bummer about the texts not going through! And he thought you all had forgotten him - :frowning: Best of luck to him and all the other UR kids here! And to all our 2016-ers - best of luck on the HOME STRETCH! S2 is done but is stuck on campus until S1 is done late Thursday. He’s really enjoyed his first semester - really feels he’s in the right place for him and doing well. :)
