Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Weatherga - this early? When does the school year end?

Interesting, geogirl. My son just got home at 2 am this morning from working two summer jobs and we have him for only 9 more days. He won’t be able to do everything and see everyone there is to see but we do live in a large city and my son was so connected in many ways to various groups (musicians, math circle, church, and so on). We just want to be sure we get as much of his time as we can!!

Oh, and you reminded me that ds used to pay for his own insurance and since he’s got $$, he can pick up the tab for his 10 days of car insurance. ;-)

Barnardgirl is finishing up a summer job she hated and an unpaid internship that she liked a lot. She’s been working about 49 hours between the two and she said the other night “I never thought I’d be glad to go back to school where I can get some rest.” She worked very hard this summer, but I think it was character building. She learned a lot this summer- tough life lessons- about doing what you have to do. She goes back to school a week early for a training session, so she’ll be leaving on the 24th.

D will be home from her summer REU on Friday. She has a week until her dorm opens, which forces her to come home (and makes me happy!) I think it’s been a great summer, and a week of down-time will do her good.

In answer to texaspg’s question, all the facts: [Academic Calendar for 2013 - 2014 | Office of the Registrar](404 - Not Found | | | Office of the Registrar)

D has moved in to her dorm room. Her two roommates will move in tomorrow. She arranged the furniture giving them 3 private areas (it’s a quad room) and sent me a video tour. :). Today, she and her friends will get their things from storage and finish setting up. We had a great summer with her home and I’m so excited for her this year. She has a lot planned.

Got S all moved in yesterday. We didn’t have a set time and he wanted to get there early. So glad we did. The lines of people and lines of cars only increased as the day went on.

Met the RM. He seems very nice and polite (at least with a parent around). He came out of the bedroom and talked for quite a while. Hoping my S will help him get adjusted. He is a tranfer student and had a lot of questions.

Really hope this is a great year for S. He is going in with a good attitude!!

D came home yesterday from summer research. Will be home until 19th! I guess they start 5 late and end 5 weeks late in spring compared to weatherga’s D.

D came home from the weekend. Had a belated bday dinner for her with the grandparents last night. Today she’s packing…

Yeah, that’s late, Texas. Son leaves in 3 days. It’s been really nice having him home.

I think classes tend to start earlier in the southeast than the northeast. Many don’t start until after Labor Day up north, but mid-August seems the norm in the south. Sorry everyone else, I have no clue about the rest of the country.

Many of sons friends are gone now, except those on trimesters and his girlfriend pretty much follows his schedule.

This year I believe he’ll bringing a lot less with him to school. And I don’t feel the need to hover, he knows better than me and it’s not like he’s packing to go off in the wilderness for a year.

Hi ALL!! Well… the time has FINALLY come. My S and I leave tonight to fly San Diego> NY>Syracuse> St Lawrence University, Canton, NY only a mere 3000 miles away. His gap year has come to an end. It will be a LOOONG day tomorrow. I had to chuckle at eyemamom’s reference, " It’s not like he packing to go into the wilderness for a year" My S did pack to go into the wilderness for 4 months and he only had a small pack on his back. He is only taking 1 small duffle bag and his backpack to college… Seriously?? I will do most of his dorm shopping( and dorm shopping for a boy is nothing), when we get there. He is going on a Pre-O backpacking trip for 4 days so I will be by myself till my H gets there on Friday. The move-in for non-Pre-O’ers and parent orientation is Sunday.

It is such an unusual feeling of sadness mixed with excitement for him. I know he is going to take to SLU like a fish to water. He already has talked to his roommate and they seem to have hit it off, but truthfully my S can get along with most anyone. He has matured SO much this past year, and with his job as an EMT and all of his outdoor stuff he has done( he also climbed El Capitan in Yosemite), he is SO ready for this next adventure. He is, of now, majoring in Environmental Science with a Philosophy concentration and will also do the pre-med required classes. It will be a huge load. On top of that he wants to get involved in the Canton Fire Dept as a fireman. He will be busy, but he thrives like that.

I know most of you have already done all of this last year, but just wanted to check back in with you all. My last of 5 is going to be a Senior this year… so here I go again into the depths of hell one more time. He is a theater kid, so auditions on top of everything else…UGH!!! My motto… I CAN do this one LAST time!!

Final week and half till driving son back to school. I’m thinking son may want to contact a friend who has the math book he will need this semester and perhaps he should buy his engineering book so it has time to get to school before he needs it. Just finished washing those twin xlong sheets and refilling his first aid box with tylenol, claritan and bandaids. Good luck to all in year #2.

DS has been doing research this summer up at school and won’t be home till a week from Sunday. I can’t wait to have him here again, at least for a little while–he’ll be home for 3 weeks before the fall quarter starts. It’s been a very quiet summer without him here. Although I do have a DD who’s a HS sophomore, she has Asperger’s and keeps very much to herself most of the time. She started back to school last week, so now it’s even quieter. It’ll be nice to have someone around to talk to–he’s so interesting and so much fun!

@5boys - good to hear the update! Your son sounds like he is going to have a blast his first year! One more S to launch! See you on the 2014 parent thread!

We just dropped my guy off today. Classes don’t start for a while, but he’s doing orientation for the freshmen and his training started today (freshmen arrive on the 27th). We had a nice 11 day visit between his lab jobs and today.

5boys, we were up in Ogdensburg part of that time… I used to ride horses at SLU back in my high school days - if you have extra time, drive to the St Lawrence River at Clayton or Ogdensburg on a sunny day - or if you have passports, cross the bridge at Ogdensburg and take Rt 2 along the river to Brockville, Ont - it’s really relaxing enjoying a deep blue river - it’s very blue on sunny days.

Youngest started his senior year today - got up on time and to school on time without his personal alarm clock (that would be me). He was able to use the mechanical variety successfully. I guess that’s one good step toward preparing for college. We also have our last run at apps, etc, this year.

I was swimming in the St. Lawrence near Ogdensburg just a month ago! It is so nice and clear and by now, even warm :)

^^^ Small world! I learned to swim in the St Lawrence many, many moons ago. It wasn’t clear then (zebra muscles have really changed things)… and my definition of “warm” has changed now that I’ve moved further south… but it’s still “my” river - my favorite (by far) over all I’ve seen and/or lived near. I’m glad to pass that on to my kids.

5boys - if your guy is scuba certified, shipwreck dives in the river are great. The fresh water doesn’t decay the ships as quickly as salt water does and there are plenty to choose from, though most boats leave from the Canadian side. You probably won’t have time, but it might be something to mention to him if it interests him. I have no idea if SLU has a scuba club.

My good friend (an SLU grad - she gave me a nice tour) grew up there and I visit most summers when I’m in NYC seeing family. Some swims in the river, a dinner at the Grandview…I’ve come to enjoy the area a lot. We also went to some falls south of Canton…can’t recall the name but a nice little hike. It is such a beautiful part of NY.

Creekland… my S is a certified Advanced Open Water diver… and yes, they do have a scuba… it’s called the Sluba club I think? OHMom… where is the Grandview? I am here right now and looking for places to eat. My S and I ate at a great pizza place last night.

I am in love with this place… it is so charming and bucolic. SOOO different than the insane So Cal area. The school is breathtaking… one of the most beautiful schools I have seen on all my college tours…maybe only Bowdoin could beat it. I love the way the school is laid out and and the dining hall and student center are out of this world gorgeous. Big fireplaces and comfy chairs everywhere. Adirondacks spread all over the campus, the food is outstanding, and the adminstration we have been in contact so far has been incredibly warm and helpful We got him settled into his dorm room yesterday because he is leaving on a Pre-O backpacking trip today. The dorms are HUGE and really nice. MOst of the dorm rooms we saw on other tours were half that size. I think if this school was not so remote it would be a top 30 school. I have yet to see of any negatives. I will be here till Sunday night. Parent stuff and Matriculation ceremony this weekend. I am off dorm room shopping today because he did not bring much with us. Just clothes mostly.
