Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

@texaspg – Yes, APAM (Applied Physics and Applied Math) is part of SEAS.

I remember being very impressed with Columbia when my daughter was in high school. She visited, but it didn’t make the short list for actual applications. It’s fun to see her there now.

I went to Washington DC to help BarnardGirl get settled, help her lease her first car and do a little sight seeing! She and her boyfriend have a great apartment right by the Nationals stadium so we went to a game. She starts her job on Wednesday. Her boyfriend graduated from Michigan two years ago, got a job in NYC and now has followed her to DC.

For those of you with kids at Columbia- when they graduate, go to the Columbia University graduation! It was the most fun graduation I’ve ever seen/been to! Each of the colleges carry some symbol - Barnard women carried big blue inflatable letter "B"s. Dental School had big toothbrushes. Columbia college had inflatable lions. Business school had big fake money. It was really a fun time

DS’12 buried in snow again in Boston.

No more Boston snow for ds and his wife, @glido. Now they’re buried in sunshine (Phoenix).

@sbjdorlo - Great to hear! If they need anything in Phoenix, don’t be shy about reaching out!

I didn’t know you were there-cool! They seem to be doing fantastically well, crazy kids. They are loving all the sports. They got free tickets to the final NCAA game last night, and they bought mini-season tickets to the Diamondbacks.

My D finished student teach in January and last week got a job offer to start teaching in the fall. She will be teaching 5th grade in a Title I school about 20 miles from our house… Short-term plan is to live at home.

Wonderful news, jmnva06. My son is finishing his self imposed gap year this month, then will join me to visit my parents in SC and then the job hunt begins. He called earlier to ask questions about his taxes before he hit submit. #adulting

Update … gap year geologist son has his first job offer! He called today and wanted to tell H and I at same time. I sensed a lot of relief from his end that the post-gap year job search is coming to a close. He only started looking in the last month as his ski job wraps up this week. He was prepared to live with us starting next month, but I guess that won’t be happening.

Congrats to your S, Snowflake!

D is finishing her first year in law school and will be working in DC for the summer. She has never been happier being able to “focus on one thing” in school. In undergrad, she had so many irons in the fire that she couldn’t thoroughly enjoy the experience. Her former college roommate/best friend recently got engaged and ask her to be the maid of honor. D will be living with her in DC this summer so I’m sure they’ll have a great time. Ah, to be young again.

D will be attending dental school at our state flagship starting the end of June. She has spent the last year working for me part time and doing data entry for a cancer treatment center. She is looking forward to going back to school! Her plan is to join my practice after graduation. I will then phase into retirement.

Okay, so I just made a change to my W-4 at work. I am reducing my deductions for dependents because my DD’12 is all grown up. As proud as I am of her, I admit to feeling a little blue.

We are all getting there, @glido ! It is a strange blueness … we want them to not need us but now we have to re-focus on ourselves and what we are doing. It is a wide open world of opportunity and now it is about you again.

Congratulations to all! Lots of great new paths being forged. My 2012 son is now in a MS/PhD program in Computer Science / Bioinformatics at UCLA. Now that he’s on the opposite coast and financially independent with his research assistant stipend I am going to back to college myself for my 2nd Master’s degree (online - not quitting my day job :P).

@glido - we had the experience this week of taking 2012 D off our car insurance. She just bought a car in her own name and bought her own insurance. Last month we removed our 27 yr old S off the car insurance. After years of having 5 drivers on the insurance we are now down to just me and my H.
It’s nice catching up on all the news.
2012 D is moving forward with life. She bought a house with her long term BF and they moved in a month ago. She continues to work and ride. She is contemplating going back to school for a MSW but in the meantime is really happy with her job working for a family law attorney. Her boss is encouraging law school but I don’t see that in the future. D still has a soft spot for children who are in situations that are difficult. She is thinking she might take the Ca state paralegal exam just to have it. She can sit for the exam with a BA and one year of experience.
I am proud of her. She has not given up and continues to do things her way.

I haven’t caught up here in a while. My guy officially graduated this past Sunday (after his Take 5 Program at UR) and will be headed to med school in Aug. Time flies. I only have one left in college and he’ll be a senior next year. I’ll freely admit I’m feeling kinda old.

Congratulations to your S @Creekland, @mom60’s D, @bookmouse’s S, and to all of the 2012’s that are going forward into adulthood. It seems like only yesterday we were preparing to launch them to college, and now I read of weddings, homes purchased, and careers begun.

D’12 has been working in medical research for almost a year now, and planning to return to school for an MBA degree in a year. She returned home and is paying her way, and saving for grad school. I am so glad to have her around for the present.

Congrats @Creekland! Where is he going to Med school?

My son graduated from UR last year with a degree in ME and has been working for a start up in Boulder CO with a company he loves. I once told my son that when I graduated from college, my first job was so wonderful, I would have worked for free for those 1st six months for the experience and all I learned. I think he has found someplace he feels the same. But, he is happy to make his own money and so am I

@Lakemom (and anyone else reading who might be curious). He’ll be right “at home” - U Rochester. He’s pretty excited to start after all the shadowing hours he’s done there.

For this summer, I’m happy to have him at “our” home. Fortunately Rochester is only 6 hours away.

Wonderful. UR has a great program. Congrats to your son!
