My S got engaged a week ago today! He will graduate from law school in May, taking the bar in July. He has been dating his fiancee for over 7 years - they started dating the summer before their senior year in HS, and survived a long distance college relationship.
My D is home for Thanksgiving, but working as a developer in the Bay Area for software company and doing a lot of swing dancing in her spare time. She’s very happy in her job and life in general. She has a bf but no long term plans yet. Nice to read everyone’s updates.
It is nice that this thread has reopened, and to learn how are young people are doing. My D is working as a software developer in California, also in the Bay area. She enjoys her work, and makes time to go hiking and spend time with friends. Congrats to everyone.
Congratulations on all the good news, especially with the engagement and upcoming wedding. Can’t believe our kids are getting married.
D2 started law school this fall after interning at an US Attorney’s office. She moved out of our apartment to be closer to her classes. She said school is hard, but she is enjoying her classes.
It’s nice to catch up on all the good news.
My D is working for a family law attorney and is also a Casa volunteer. She s struggling with what she wants to do career wise. She has considered both a Masters in Social Work or law school. She would love to be an attorney for the child but struggles with spending 200,000 on law school for a job that won’t pay much. For now she continues with her job that she enjoys for an attorney that she considers a good friend. She continues to spend a lot of her time and most of her money on her horse. She has found a nice barn with nice supportive women and she has started jumping again. She lives a 7 hour drive away so we don’t see her as much as we would like.
She is getting married next year to her fiancé who she met her 2 nd year of undergrad.
mom60 - it is possible to get good merit aid for law school if her stats are high enough. Has she taken her LSAT yet? It maybe worthwhile for your D to look into. Merit could be from 50K(for 3 years) to full tuition.
@mom60 - my S received a full tuition scholarship to law school. It’s not a top tier school, but has a good bar passage/employment rate. Likewise his college GPA and LSAT score were good, but not top tier. He’s interested in government or public service and has had great internships both summers for state agencies.
@college_query and @oldfort - no LSAT at this point. She was pretty set on social work until this summer. Her boss is encouraging her and feels she can do it. My D is intelligent but has always been the student who puts in 89.9 percent effort. I think she would find Social Work a more interesting program. I don’t know where it comes from but she has a strong desire to work with disadvantaged children. Unfortunately she knows it comes with low pay. She also knows she wants to keep riding and horses are expensive. Adding to the dilemma is that her fiancé works at a University and they own a home so she would need to find a law school that she can get into within driving distance of her home. She also needs to work.
@college_query, @mom60 and @oldfort, my D is also in law school and graduating in May. She was offered almost a full ride at 2 lower ranked schools but chose a half tuition offer at a higher ranked school. She interned with DOJ one summer and then a mid-sized firm the next. She was offered a post grad job with the mid-sized but is applying for a clerkship.
BarnardGirl is working as a consultant, living in DC and her project for the past year has been with the State Dept. She’s traveling to embassies. So since she started on this project in Sept '17, she’s been to 15 countries on 5 continents. She has ridden a camel, drank cappuccino with 23K gold flakes in it and rode a dune buggy in Abu Dhabi, she spent 3 weeks in Bahrain, 2 weeks in Kathmandu Nepal, visited the great wall of China, rode in a tuk tuk in Bangkok, went to Christmas markets in Prague and Slovenia, beaches in Buenos Aires. She’s enjoying her adventures at a time with no ties like a house or kids to tie her down
I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do those things at her age and I’m incredibly proud of her
She’s thinking about an MBA program in a year or two.
Sounds amazing! It’s great she is able to do it at her age.
I wish D2 is almost finished with her law school. She is still in her first year. She just got a great internship this summer working for a federal judge in NYC.
Glad to see so many updates and so much great news. Can’t believe they are all becoming great productive adults from those kids who needed to get into college!
D has spent the longest stretch at home since graduating from college prepping for step 1. Currently planning on Internal medicine with an unknown specialization goal. D2 is 4 years behind and also planning to pursue medicine. Probably will be most stressful fall with both trying to apply.
@oldfort - have her watch re-runs of Law & Order, she will see her office building in most episodes!
@glido - I will mention it to her. It should be an interesting summer if there are more prosecutions out of the Mueller investigation, but it looks like it may not happen.
@oldfort - There is always something interesting happening at the S.D.N.Y.! Best of luck to her.
My D and her boyfriend got engaged last week. Wedding date is likely June of 2020
Big congratulations. I can’t believe kids from our class are getting married. It was like yesterday when they were applying to colleges. You need to join the wedding thread
Congrats @jmnva06! I think I’ll be waiting a while for our first wedding.
Our D graduated from law school this weekend. She got an unexpected call for a federal clerkship interview last week and is now prepping for it. She’s excited but a little jealous of her friends who are taking the week off before bar prep starts.
