<p>I heard from S2 - he actually replied to my email at work - he feels fine today. This is one of these good lessons to learn early on I guess (before the freshman 15 sets in). </p>
<p>Now you all know that since I ordered one of those phones with a keyboard this morning and am upgrading my ancient cell phone plan and old phone so that I can actually text - he starts replying to my emails. I think he knew I was worried - it was nice of him to let me know he is fine. Of course, not a word was written about his first day of classes…</p>

<p>I have one of those ancient cell phones too so I email text all the time. Since I work on line it is much easier.</p>
<p>DS called yesterday just to chat with DH and I. He is so happy! Everything seems to working out well. Classes are a challenge, but not too difficult, friends are great, fun is great, everything is great. He signed up to take an advanced open water dive class and is very excited! Says Google calandar is a life saver, everything school and social related goes on the calendar. DH and I were just beaming after talking with him. So happy for him!!</p>
<p>So happy to hear all the good news and contact from the kiddies! We will all make it through!</p>
<p>Someone here had a suggestion, maybe it was another thread - about just texting a picture of something at home - like a pet. So I took a pic of his cat and sent it to him and we chatted a couple of times about the fat lazy cat laying on the couch cushion all day. He’s worried the cat is getting fat because he misses him, I told him middle age just causes a little fluffiness around the edges.</p>
<p>As much as I want to pepper him with questions and suggestions, I want to make sure our contact isn’t always like that and we can just say hi.</p>
<p>It’s like a cartoon - what we say vs what we mean - cat’s laying around as usual - what i mean is - how are you, are you eating well, sleeping, do you have nice friends, how are classes, are you keeping up, are you happy?</p>
<p>We emailed DS three times this weekend, all with just pictures; Saturday was the dog after she had been swimming, and Sunday was from the state fair, a cow, and a chicken. He sent us back a picture from his Iphone but it overwhelmed our archaic little Tracfones, so we still don’t know what his response was!</p>
<p>Hard to believe that S is next up on the launching list, a week from today. </p>
<p>I think he is really ready to get started and was disappointed to hear that classes don’t start until the 27th. That doesn’t mean that he is paying much attention to the messages from the school. I had read the University email yesterday that talked about orientation activities and mentioned to him that they could attend the football game and then would be taken to a big amusement park that evening. He wondered how I had heard about that

<p>Any important things that your kids forgot? I’d love to learn from your experience.</p>
<p>Northernwoods- if you didn’t already, put on your list a basic sewing kit (needle and thread) and a reliable flashlight. Also, extra batteries for anything they have (flashlight, calculator, toothbrush, alarm clock, etc).</p>
<p>ReneeD7 - Was thinking about you and your D when I saw news today about the clean up after Hurricane Isaac. Have things at her school begun to return to normal? Hoping that she and all the other students are doing fine. Hopefully, they will be able to look back on this as a time of bonding and making it through together.</p>
<p>Things forgotten or more popular than I would have thought:</p>
<p>Brita water bottles.
Sunglasses.
Tide pods.
Extra chair - he has one from bed, bath & beyond and he says it is the bomb.</p>
<p>Regarding things forgotten…
After he’s all packed up and everything’s in the car (or boxes & suitcases for flight/shipping) do a final walk-through the house and look to see whether there’s any of his stuff in odd corners. I found D’s favorite sweatshirt stuffed under a couch pillow, a cellphone charger, and a tube of posters. My D’s best friend forgot her favorite quilt and the book she was in the middle of reading, both left on her bed. </p>
<p>It’s not a big deal to mail items later, but it’s better to just catch the omissions before your student departs.</p>
<p>eyemamom, what kind of chair is it? I don’t know yet how big my son’s room will be, but an extra chair sounds like a great idea.</p>
<p>my son needed two packages of sticky tak for all his posters (oh and more posters - he has a lot of wall space)
under bed storage
a screw driver (both flat and philips head)
case of water (it gets hot while moving and unpacking)
several of those shirts for working out (if your child goes to the gym) - laundry does not get done everyday
clip light for the bed (so you don’t have to get out of bed to turn off the overhead)</p>
<p>Screwdrivers and a hammer. Those were definitely the things needed for move-in that we didn’t have.</p>
<p>Me too … on cloud nine (too early for G&T!) after a chatty newsy email from D: </p>

<li>She never received the cookies I sent last week (is happy that I’m sending more).<br></li>
<li>She doesn’t need book covers (which I’d offered to send) because all her books are paperback. </li>
<li>She is auditioning for chamber music (wish her luck) but isn’t sure she wants to commit the time.<br></li>
<li>Says she wants to keep her cello (I’d offered to come fetch it home) even if she doesn’t end up doing chamber music (“b/c its nice to practice sometimes and destress.”)<br></li>
<li>She’ll try to call Gma (who’s having minor surgery today).</li>

<p>My D needed her own copy of the health insurance card and we put off asking for additional cards until too close to move – we had to send it to her later.</p>
<p>I’ll second the suggestion of a walk-through. My daughter left her laundry bag on the floor in the hallway to her bedroom. </p>
<p>We also did the banking stuff right before she went to school, so she didn’t have her permanent debit card before she went, just a temporary one. (Before, she had a savings account with an ATM card, but I wanted her to have a checking account with a debit card.) If you have time, it’s nice to have those odds and ends tied up in advance.</p>
<p>My daughter created packing lists (hooray for organization!), but deleted items from the electronic list (instead of highlighting them or putting a mark beside the item) as they were packed. That meant that there was no easy way to look over the whole list and check for missing items (like, say, pencils).</p>
<p>We remembered to send stamps and to buy birthday cards for friends and family members with upcoming birthdays. However, she forgot to take some addresses with her.</p>
