Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

Lark, I don’t think they will take it the wrong way and it wouldn’t matter if they did. She’s already in. Also, as my daughter keeps telling me, you will never really deal with the Admissions office again once she’s there. It’s a distinct department at every school with a distinct task and the rest of the school functions pretty independently.

Milcah, if money is an issue then the schools offering $6,000 are a better deal. My understanding is Berkeley doesn’t give money with Regents or very little. Do they give perks like priority registration the way UCLA does? Any other perks? Those perks can be very valuable. I think UCLA offers priority housing as well. If a school with a Regents Scholarship is a great fit, I think I would go with it. Berkeley is not for everyone. I’ve known kids who turned down Berkeley for Irvine because they just didn’t like it. Cal reminds me a little of Manhattan. Many people can’t imagine living anywhere else, but it’s not for everyone.

5 Boys - I would say that it’s more between Whitman and L & C if you think of Whitman as being just right of center and L & C as being just left of center.

Reed, L & C, UPS, Whitman, Willamette
I put Willamette on the right because they have more students who are looking at business, econ law type paths with their graduate programs close by and the “state house” across the street.

Reed is just in a whole different category than the others - my best HS friend who was scary alternative and scary smart went there and it was a perfect fit. Reed is a no-sports, academic hot house. My friend was northwest-ish but not outdoorsy exactly - more Portlandia, riotgrrl northwest and would not have fit in at any of the others (went on to Yale PhD).

Uh…YEAH! We need you here 5boys. If nothing else, we expect entertaining stories about your S for the next 4 (5) years! I believe the HS 2010 thread actually calls it “Parents of College Class of 2014 and beyond” for exactly that reason. :)

Lark - I ditto mimk6. Don’t worry about impressing the admissions department anymore - just call and ask your question!

notice the title of our 2014 thread, it is 2014 and Beyond! since copied by the 2015ers. We have some doing a 5 year coop in our group, as well as kids who have had to change plans, leaves of absences, etc. I’m sure that will happen here also, there is not a quick straight path for everyone.

We started the thread in July because that was after all had graduated.

And the list still deciding dwindles… we should have a decision beginning of next week.

[cross posted with PN!]

Lark123 - Of course you can call and make the arrangements, your kid’s already admitted and even if this was before acceptance, calling for logistics is fine. Being from the east coast I have often called CA schools, it’s just easier with the time difference.

I am so glad our high school stops classes (except AP) for the last quarter for seniors. This month is so booked with college visits there is no way she would be able to deal with school and homework and tests and whatever! She’s already begun the preliminary work on her Senior Project - she’s writing a blog on being a tourist in NYC. She’s set up the blog, wrote her first entry, and planned the first two weeks of touring, which will begin once she’s done visiting schools (and hopefully decided on one!).

One more reminder regarding hotel reservations - those of you who have a kid who is currently a junior in college should make hotel reservations next month for their college graduation.

This marathon is almost over, the finish line is in sight but I fear the very steep, long hill just before that finish line!

Good morning everyone. Just dropping in for an update. D had decided on a school in the fall and was admitted on an athletic scholarship. (I wish I could be more specific about the school but her sport is so small as well as the school so she feels it would be easy to ID her. ;)).

D is a good student with great stats and this is a lower tiered school so I wasn’t sure how academically challenged she would be. It had been a roller coaster ride for me (not her) because this isn’t what I envisioned for her. (I thought I’d be riding the USS Indecision with the rest of you.) Our solution to that was to have her apply to their honors college and she was accepted. So, hopefully she’s set up for a full college experience playing the sport she loves.

I have been lurking here following everyone’s journey and I must say it’s been pretty
exciting!

Hi all. I needed a small break from the whole college thing, and Passover gave me a very good excuse. I’ll never be able to keep up here, though.

We are done. D has accepted her offer from Yale and notified everyone else, though we keep getting mail from all of the places that accepted her. I’ve made hotel reservations for move-in and Parents Weekend. Now H and I are arguing about who will do the move-in. D’15 will have already started school by then, so it seems unreasonable for us both to go and abandon the younger sister. Well, we have a while to work it out.

We got the NM notification back in March before all the results were in. Guess we were on the early end.

I called on D’s behalf, no one seemed to care…she’s swamped with class work, prom and running Community Camp Out this weekend. Over 500 people, rain expected on Friday, lots of stress. If I didn’t call, the questions wouldn’t be asked/answered until late next week.

For those so inclined, postive thoughts/prayers for no rain after noon on Friday would be awesome…the adult in charge of registrations lost count somewhere along the line, so an additional 100 people are coming, and the rain just complicates things. D’s taking it all in stride, coping as she goes, but I’m increasingly stressed. Can you guess which one of us is Type A?

good to see you, IJustDrive! Congrats on the decision being made. :)

LOL - my S’15 will be in school by move in day, but we are abandoning him and both going out for move in. Didn’t even give it a second thought. We’re lucky because we have family nearby and lots of options for him during his abandonment. With two kids going to the same college, I think we’ll drive two cars out and leave one behind. That is, IF we can get our old junker to seem a little bit reliable by then. No sense saddling them with too much of a project car.

^^ Btw, my kids would enjoy this type of abandonment. ;)

As a parent of a Reed '09 grad I think saintfan’s description of Reed above is spot-on. :)

IJustDrive, I was in that position when I moved my daughter into Yale and DH stayed behind. But I would like to say that, at Yale, less is more because if every student has a person that’s 12 people doing things and moving, etc. in a suite that is made for six. If everyone brings two people you now have 18 people and it would make it stressful and crowded. Floor space is needed to assemble IKEA furniture, etc. As I recall, in DD’s suite two people had no one, one had parents who just sat to the side, one had a mom who was mobilizing everything, which was good, and there was one grown sibling and me. And that felt like a lot of people.

It’s officially official now. Tulane has my deposit money. My girl can select her housing and make orientation reservations.

Chiming in here to respond to the news from IJustDrive… Congrats! Our D’s will be classmates!

IJD----Will your D (and you?) be attending Bulldog Days next week? We are heading out- it sounds like an amazing and busy and informative experience, with a few interesting things for parents to do.
mimk- what about your son, as Yale is still in the running, if I am not mistaken?

(PM me if you prefer.)

performersmom – D will be at BDD, but I will not. We wanted her to navigate the travel by herself (and to save some money – she can sleep on someone’s floor!)

Great news!
Hope she has a blast.
WE can PM after the experience.
What EC’s, academics is she interested in, btw?

(p.s. Other reasons we are going is that our D is at BS, and we are giving several kids rides to and from BDD; and D has a break the following week, so it made sense for us to be out there. I am looking forward to being around all these young people for a good couple of weeks!)

Although my daughter ultimately rejected Yale, she still fondly remembers BDD. She had such a great time, enjoy!

saintfan - I love your descriptions. St. O has the best/nicest admissions people and I know exactly who you’re talking about who emailed your D. I just love those guys, and the school is the most welcoming one we encountered. My D and I were talking in the car today and again saying if she had not gotten into Pomona (which she really didn’t expect to since it’s such a lottery) she would have definitely chosen St. O. I think she’s going to pick Pomona (not official yet though), but letting St. O know - and that D____ will think NOOO! is a hard thought - because they will care a bit. sighs. I think Pomona will be glad to get her, but there isn’t the same personal connection yet. However she did get a personal letter from the local Pomona rep and she loved getting that.

School descriptions were right on too. We loved UPS - my D’s favorite among Willamette and Whitman. I didn’t get a strong feeling about the student body… I guess the ones we met seemed smart/intelligent a little intellectual but not taking themselves too seriously, confident. It definitely seems academic rather than pre-professional - sort of like East Coast LAC’s… but with NW relaxed aspect. We met several kids who went there because they got better FA than at Northwestern or someplace. They have cheap movies every week and strong residential community - theme houses etc. I liked the location too… close to Seattle, but not too close - and the campus is lovely. Look forward to hearing how the visits there go pacnw and 5boys.

Rayrick–are you going to be at Princeton next weekend with your DD? I will be there for the first day and a half! PM me if you have any questions. Be sure to stop by the Art Museum while you are there!!

Bump…
