Just wanted to update everyone. PSAT scores are out. Son was pulled out of class this afternoon and given his score. Good enough to qualify for NMSF.

Good luck to everyone else as the numbers start getting released to all of the kids.

Congrats to you and your son MemphisGuy! I’m hoping my son received his scores today - his counselor thought they would have them by the end of this week.

No scores here in South Florida. Last year we got them just before Winter break.

Fabulous news Memphisguy!!! No scores yet for us. Hopefully we will hear next week.

The book my DS said he liked, but now says he doesn’t, is “The People’s History of the United States” by Zinn. Good luck to all on getting those PSAT scores!

Oh, Zinns book is a required supplement for D’s class, too. She really likes it…

Good Luck to all on the PSAT scores–D’s school will give them out in January!

congrats to your son MemphisGuy!

Hope we get ours soon…

Congrats to S of MemphisGuy! Well done.

chiming in on APUSH even though my D is not taking it, having a hard enough time in the reg history class and taking more advanced classes in other areas.

Anyway, my D1 (now a college freshman) read Zinn, as well as about a dozen total books in her class as well as the textbook. They each gave a perspective on a certain aspect of the class. Zinn is well known around Boston btw, and Matt Damon used to babysit for them and mentioned Zinn in Good Will Hunting.

But a second attempt at getting back to my point, one book I found recommended here on cc and which my D1 also found very valuable is one published by AMSCO. Search on that here on cc and you will find the details. Had to order directly through the publisher. But it was a good overview of the test material including questions/dbqs which would be helpful preparation. Hope this helps someone out there.

D2 (the 2012er) said her school will distribute PSAT scores next week.

Wonderful, MemphisGuy!! Yay!

Pinot, I had several sitdowns with D’s lit teacher (wildly subjective grades) her first year-- to no avail. She couldn’t have been less interested and kept reiterating that D hadn’t read the book, etc. (In fact, she went on and on about her own son and what a great writer he is, how D ought to write the way he does…so I could barely get in a word!) LOL, in retrospect…but at the time it was an outrage. But 90% of my interactions with teachers have been just great-- teachers honestly concerned about students education and well-being. So I think it’s always worth trying to make a connection.

May we all fare well with PSAT scores!!

My son was given the AMSCO book, as well. He likes that one too.

memphisguy, congratulations ! that is wonderful news ! my oldest d was nmf so if you have questions, please feel free to pm me and I can try to help with some possible answers.

no results here yet. probably closer to Christmas before they’ll be given out.

Congratulations to MemphisSon! :)

D only has home room once a week, on Wednesday. So that means we could get them on the 8th, or wait as long as the 22nd. I’m on the edge of my seat.

We got it by mail last year. It will be a few more days for us to get it if again by mail. How does National Merit work? Am I right thinking that about 5% nationally will be commended? About 1/5 of that will be in the running as semifinalists but that would be adjusted to represnt all the states? Does that mean it’s about 1% in each state? I am sure more complicated than that but just roughly speaking.

Congrats to Memphis. The score must be way over the cut-off to be sure already. Congrats!

Congrats to MemphisSon!

I think our school sends them home at Christmas break. Or perhaps they are in my son’s backpack right now. He would be one to forget to pull them out.

No scores yet for DS, but his practice tests for ACT are steadily improving. He takes ACT. One of his best friends got rejected from one of his favorite schools this week, so DS had the wake up call that I have been waiting for.
We have snow falling right now. Expecting 3 or 4 inches this weekend. Anyone else getting winter?

I’m on the edge of my seat about PSAT’s too! S scored high enough to qualify last year as a sophomore, but that doesn’t mean he did this year. Our school gives them out the last day of school before break - I wish they’d just give them out right away. I thought about calling to ask if they have his score yet, but decided it doesn’t change anything to know sooner so I might as well not spend one of my this-mom-is-a-pain-in-the-butt’s on it, if you know what I mean! Congrats to Memphis son!

S is off taking a subject test right now - should be home any minute. Hope it went well!

We get them by mail and then the guidance counselors “explain the scores” to the kids. The only thing significant about their explanation is that we can then get our Naviance password which is all our guidance counselors are good for with college help!

Our D gets hers in English class Friday next week - or so we have been told.

My daughter’s school says they should arrive at the school early next week.

My S just received his scores in the mail. How do you know if they qualify for NMF? Does it say so on the sheet?
