Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

^I don’t know if it needs to be the roommate, but I would hope that DS would have someone on his hall that would notice if he’s not there - and that there would likewise be someone that DS has a good enough relationship with that he’s that person for them. That just seems like a friendship kind of thing.

Although, having said that…it is a bit different in the age of cellphones. When we were in college in the Dark Ages, we told each other our whereabouts just so that no one would tell our parents when they called, “No, I haven’t seen her for 2 days and I have NO IDEA where she is…”

Better Tab n Vodka than Grain Alcohol and fruit juice----
Freshman year, the punch was killer, we all dropped like flies once in the first two months of college. Lesson learned, though.

Had a great afternoon at Beer Fest, came home and took a delicious nap in a quiet house. Ahhhh. My kind of pre-Mothers Day. Thanks all you beer-loving blog readers.

Heard from hubby–his 7/8th grade lax bros won their 2 tourney games in Columbus and will advance to tomorrow’s brackets. Stepson plays 9th grade lax, he’s just there to support his dad the coach. I’m sitting here watching lax on ESPNU without them even being home, what is happening to me???

My girl is running spotlight at her last high school talent show tonight. She had the chance to go see Avett Bros tonight instead, but didn’t want to miss her friends on stage one last time.

Very scary stuff on the menengitis. Thinking of all those kids, so sad. My girl has had her shots, I have to get her doc to sign off on paperwork to bring with us to orientation next month.

I think the reason the class of 2012 is so great is obviously because their 'rents are too!

Oh, kathie, I meant to say, glad the pups are okay.

Compared to other people’s problems/scares (menengitis, other health issues), it is minor but today was a totally crappy day.

D2’s soccer team played their worst game of the year and most of the players played worse then I’ve seen them play in several years.

D1’s team won but on forfeit because the other team didn’t have enough players show.

The 2nd graders that D1 and I coach together played a team that had been taught to do both of the things that make me crazy and the girls wilted in the 2nd half.

DC United and the Caps then both lost.

It feels like every sports season, there is 1 day like today, so I’m glad to get it over but it still feels like crap.

I am a pedi nurse and have seen my share of tragedies. I have always worked in ICU"S My kids got meningitis shots because they are day students at a boarding school, just made sense to me.
I have mentioned this many times but my dog ate a hardcover book, costing us 4k to remove. he does themost random weird thing. any food in his reach would be gone in a minute.

I love you guys!       :)

Yeah, my sister had a party tonight…

Roll tide! can’t help it. Whatever school your kid is going to, it’s a great cheer…

We say Roll Wave in our house, PN! Cheers!

DS had the first meningitis shot some years back. My pediatrician is really great about immunizations. Jaylynn, it sounds from your post that the meningitis vaccine is not 100% effective or even not that close to it. Did I misunderstand that?

It’s worth having a serious talk with your kids about what to do if they get sick. I have heard many, many unfortunate stories of kids who did not get the best health care at a student health center and where serious things have gone unchecked. It’s always the case that a patient has to be their own advocate, but it’s especially the case on a college campus I think. Please tell your son or daughter that if they think something is wrong they should call for advice – it’s the one time they should really call.

Speaking of immunizations, I wrote a while back that DS’s school required a titer test for chicken pox if no immunization occurred. Another parent discovered a discrepancy between one area of the website and the instructions to physicians – seems a confirmation of illness may suffice.

Today was a great day. Part One of DS’s graduation from Pomona College. Today was the department receptions and we got to meet some professors and DS took us on a tour of the labs which was really interesting. Then we helped him load up my van and then they had Class Day. The student speaker gave an amazing speech that was wonderful from start to finish. At one point, he choked up as he thanked his parents for letting him go so far from home for college and supporting him, etc. Then he asked the students to turn around and look at the people who have supported them. It was very moving. Tomorrow is the graduation ceremony itself.

Nice, mimk. Enjoy!

The vaccine is actually pretty good, about 85% effective, which is about average for many vaccines. Two doses brings the efficacy up. Then herd immunity (when the people around you are vaccinated at the same level of efficacy) brings the benefit up more. No vaccine is 100% effective, but this one is a good one (Menactra). The new vaccine (Menveo) I believe has comparable numbers overall; the goal now is to try to include more serotypes.

Hope that’s true about the cpox thing, mim. The requirement of a titer is so unusual that pediatricians everywhere would be dubious.

momsings: To heck with school nights. DS is going to Rush on Nov. 13th and Red Hot Chili Peppers on Nov. 14th. Crazy, I know, but you only live once. Plus I get lots of good mom points for allowing it.

Long, hot day of baseball. Horrible first game and lost. Much better 2nd game and won - so go into state as a 3rd seed. DD mad as a hornet because for some reason known only to him, coach decided to introduce her to his skanky girlfriend who was a the game for some reason known only to him . . . just, wow.

We are off this morning for D12s orientation tomorrow at F&M (I get to spend 7 hours in the car for Mother’s Day, not my favorite). Her little toy poodle is glued to my lap since he saw the suitcase; he is not going to be happy left with the boys for 3 days.

D is so excited! In the course of one day they will squeeze in: an interview for roommates, a french placement exam, a meeting with an advisor for course selection, and quite a few hours of “pomp and circumstance”. It should be quite the day!

Wow. Wackalunacy is all over the place in the last few pages.

DDs play closed last night. I have lost count of the kids sleeping in my house - but I did have to sneak by two on the family room sofas to get to the computer.

D1 turns two decades today - I have survived one complete teenagerhood!

Both my Ds had the meningitis shot to go to high school since it is a BS. That was 4 -6 years ago. Think I will check with the doc re boosters this summer.

We have border collies, supposedly the smartest breed. One of mine uses all of his brain power to steal forbidden food. Over the years he has eaten an entire batch of chocolate chip cookies, several apple pies, a bag of cough drops - wrappers and all, innumerable packs of gum, chocolate bars, energy bars - yes he can open the wrappers. Last night he got a bunch of grapes off of the counter - and he once ate half a head of broccoli. He opens backpacks, steals from coat pockets and even jumped up to get a candy bar off of a bookshelf. When he was a pup I would call the vet every week. Finally they started answering with “what did he eat this time?” Generally he gets a few slices of bread and is OK, but he did have surgery to extract a sock when he was 6 months old.

D2s spring sports team qualified for regional finals yesterday (without her since she was on stage). DD has mixed feelings about it since the tournament is the same day as prom! There goes the hair appointment.

I was trying to find out yesterday what health forms or immunizations my DS needed and was dismayed to learn that they want him/us to fill out his immunization record online AND THEN print the form and get it signed by the doctor. What a joke! So now I need to get his info over the phone from the peds office first before I can even print the form. AND, they require TWO doses of the chicken pox shot or a titer! That is absurd. We were going to get him the gardisil shot series but now, if he needs another chicken pox shot we don’t have time for both (before we leave for our summer home). He had a second menactra AND a fresh Tdap (tetanus, dip, pertussis) last month when he had his 18 yr. old check up.
Is this common practice, requiring 2 cpox shots?

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms on the list.

DW got breakfast in bed and her own IPod. D1 is making dinner tonight.

Another immunization question, DS had the hep B series when he was less than a year old.is this good enough or does he need some sort of booster like the chicken pox one?

I was sure not much was happening today. DH and DS2 are out of town and only DS1 is here but he is not the type to remember.

I wake up and he is starting to make the French Press coffee which he has never done before and there is a card waiting…I was so surprised! And I have to share the card!

What Mom says…What Mom means

Where are you going?..I love you.
What time will you be home?..I love you.
Please call if you’ll be late…I love you.
I know I can trust you…I love you.
I love you…I love you.

Happy Mother’s Day. Mom - I love you too!

Then he wrote:

I had to get this one because I was out driving at night with half of the phrases on the front of this card still ringing in my ear. The months ahead and my looming independence will bring both relief and frustrations, and now is as good a time as any to remind you that if I frustrate when I trade the yoke of parental oversight for that of personal responsibility its your love that has allowed me to get here in the first place. I owe you everything.

I am so proud of him and yes I got tears in my eyes!

Wow Cal1983 - what wonderful words! You’ve got a nice boy there!

Wonderful card and true sentiment

Happy Mothers Day to the wackalooniest moms I know! Brunch with my Mom and girl today, can’t ask for anything more. I just hope she’ll talk to me in the car on the way to my Mom’s…but she’ll probably have her head buried in an AP study guide ;)
