PinotNoir - I hear ya! We have been those parents for weeks now. It royally sucks.

I love it! The synapses are firing in his brain!

PN, we had a similar experience with our S. He was hanging out with some friends who I thought were compatible with him. Same ec’s, good students, nice parents. Then I found out that one in particular had issues compounded by the fact that his single parent dad traveled for work quite a bit. That was the end of that. He was no longer allowed to go to his house. S was not happy saying the restriction wasn’t going to end their friendship. I told him that it wasn’t the friendship that was the issue, it was the lack of supervision. He was welcome to our house if they wanted to hang out. It wasn’t long before S found another group (and I was good friends with their parents, too!) So, you are doing the right thing.

My son got his wisdom teeth out yesterday. I guess I can forgive him for not being productive.[/quote

Somehow I missed this - ouch! I hope he’s having a smooth recovery!

lilmom - that’s pretty much the approach we’re taking. 'You can still do things together, but you can’t just go hang out at his house unsupervised." I’ve been told teens are lazy enough that this approach often results in less and less hanging out together because it just makes it a bit of a hassle.

Is anybody doing anything fun for NYE? Fun as in staying home with the family but making it more fun that the usual board games and movies?

Oh, if only the family would stay home! Both girls are gone - D1 (college soph) just flew to NYC to spend the weekend with friends and D2 is headed out the door as I write, to drive 2 hours to a camp reunion. This is her first solo “long” drive

So DH and I will stay in, build a fire, cook a wonderful dinner, and probably be asleep well before midnight ;)

We have been stuck in NJ for 5 days due to the storm. We are finally leaving to go back home. We will arrive tonight at 11pm, and turn around to go down to Acapulco tomorrow morning. We are going to friend’s villa for New Year’s Eve. Almost cancelled the trip because of the storm, but got lucky on getting this flight out. D1 is coming with us too, we had to put her on an earlier flight due to lack of seats on our flight.

During this break, D2 focused on her SAT and essays for a summer program. We are slowly getting her first semester grades in, so far so good. She is aiming for Jan test, fingers crossed as her last time.

Happy New Year.

Have fun in Acapulco, oldfort! We’re in San Diego visiting family. Eating at our favorite restaurants (actually holes in the walls!) And family party are planned.

Acapulco is only 4 hour drive from our new home, so it is not something extravagant (few perks of my post), and most expats are out there right now, so it should be a fun weekend.

Oldfort, I have had dreams of DH and I doing teachers exchanges. A friend did one in Italy and another in Ireland. It would enable us to experience living in another country.
Drive safely to Acapulco!

It has been a bigger adjustment than we anticipated, especially for D2. But now she is speaking Spanish fluently (even texting), and said she likes it here better than her old school. Even though she is in an American school, kids here are not as crazed about college, and they don’t have a long list of ECs.

Italy would be a great place to live for a little while. H goes there a lot for business and he is learning Italian.

Half of my family lives in Italy these days-- niece went to teach English for a year, got married, now teaches at the American school in Rome…younger niece decided to go for college to be near her sister. They are a very happy healthy bunch, I must say.

Happy New Year dear 2012ers – I’m looking forward to being part of this group through the coming year!

Happy New Year everyone!!

Happy New Year 2012ers. Looking for feedback. D is planning for the new year and Sr Classes (with Bio Major in mind?). D is trying to decide on dropping FL Sr yr, to fit in AP Bio & Physics. Currently in 5th yr honors Language. Is looking for some advice if dropping the language would look bad? Some recent grads told her they had questions from college admissions about this.

d1d2d3- we are having the same dilemma with the schedule. In our situation, it appears that DS will be choosing between a language course and a biomed senior course. I am hoping that he will be able to explain why he dropped language for another class. He has no desire to take a lnother language class at a community college, since he will have a very busy senior year.

d1d2d3, quite a few kids at D’s school dropped FL in their Sr Yr. I know personally two kids from the class of 2012 who did that. One is currently a junior at Harvard and the other one is at MIT.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012’s!!! Hope everyone has an exciting and hopefully more prosperous new year ahead of them.

I had the same question about the FL too, and even started a new thread awhile back regarding that. My DS also is thinking about dropping FL next year, but replacing it with a either Physics on top of AP Bio or an Advanced honors class… works above AP level. I think for d1d2d3… that should be fine because your D has already reached the 5th year. For my DS he would stopping after 3 years. He did not take it this year because he is leaving in a few weeks for a school in Vermont this semester and they don’t offer Latin. He would have to take AP Latin next year without having it for a year… we are both concerned about that one. Latin has always been his most challenging class, but he likes it. It’s a tough call. Most of the responses I got on my thread went along with the idea that it was fine if you dropped FL Senior year if you replace it with another rigorous class. Any other thoughts on that?

I had thought that DD wouldn’t be able to continue FL (French in her case) Senior year because she would have run out of classes, but it appears they’re considering a French VI class, and DD is interested. I guess we’ll see.

Another idea IJD… is to see if the teacher will do the French VI class as an independent study instead of a real class. This opens up their schedule, but your D would still get to show her interest in French at that level. They do this a lot in FL classes at our HS. I’m thinking of asking one of the teacher’s to maybe do this for my DS next year. I’m just worried that because it isn’t a regular class he will blow it off and just not do the work that it requires and then not be able to pass the tests.

Happy New Year!!

My current college freshman did not take a foreign language his senior year. He would have been in his fifth year of Spanish, but instead took AP Pysics. The colleges he applied to did not question his decision. I think they just want to see rigor. I’m not sure what my 2012 is planning yet for next year, but I’m guessing that he also will skip Spanish, and instead opt for an AP science class.

My DS is currently taking AP Spanish Language (he took spanish 4 last year as a sophomore…he had taken 1 and 2 in middle school). Next year he will drop the FL, since very few non native speakers do well in AP Spanish Lit. and he will already have had 5 years of Spanish on his transcript. He would love to be fluent in Spanish.

He is already planning on taking next year AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Biology, AP Gov/Economics, AP Psychology, Honors Astronomy and either Honors English 4 or AP English Lit (trying to talk him out of that one). I am trying to convince him to take a lighter load, knowing that senioritis (and just plain burn out) may happen but, this kid does what this kid does. He loves to challenge himself and stress out his mom!

Happy New Year!

DS is in Spanish 4 this year and can take Spanish 201 next year if he wants. I am hoping he will take AP Chem as a second science and drops Spanish. Not sure what he would like to do though!

We had a great vacation and fun family time. Now, however, my DS12 and DD13 are going to try cramming 4 days of homework into 2 days. I’m wishing them luck! I plan on going to see True Grit as we missed the show yesterday b/c it was sold out. Shame on me for not going earlier and ordering tickets through fandango. Have a great 1/1/11 everyone!
