I’m not aware of any of such schools. The only exception is Columbia Engineering. Do you mind sharing a name or two?

jersey, as I said in the college 14 thread, my older daughter may be a classics major. younger D (one for this thread) also enjoys Latin in school.

I think D2 is done with SATIIs. She took a couple and didn’t do fabulously, few of her potential schools require them, esp if going with ACT. Don’t think she’ll bother further. ACT in Dec was decent considering she was sick that day, she has a baseline from which to improve. Next no-conflict date for her is April.

She has said she wanted to look at southern schools, we are in the Boston area. She is interested in engineering, although I think a school not solely concentrated in tech would be the best. Lots of choices in PA area, but don’t know if that qualifies as southern enough for her We will be visiting my niece in Feb in Atlanta and visting GT and Clemson.

Our HS is on trimesters and first one finished before Thanksgiving. No big tests around this time.

seiclan - you can split sending SAT II scores from one sitting. College Board will let you choose which subjects to send, regardless of date, but you have to send every test you took in each particular subject. So if S takes the SAT Chem test twice, he will submit both scores from both dates, but can leave the Phys (or whatever else) that he took the same date unreported.

Then, from the college’s point of view, they either accept score choice (most schools) or insist on seeing all test scores (fewer schools).

My son is in AP Phys B this year too. i have a vague memory of reading someone on CC saying that the SAT Phys test resembles AP Phys B more than AP Phys C, but i don’t know if that’s true. My son just asked me yesterday to try to find out how much overlap there is between AP Phys B and the SAT Phys test. I have a book that has a practice test for each SAT subject test somewhere (leftover from my older son who never used it) - I thought I’d have him take the Phys one and see what he thinks.

Thanks for the info on subject tests. I think he will just stick with Math II & Phys and leave it at that.

DougBetsy - i agree with you on the “turning the corner” feeling. My son started a new semester today, which is a great feeling after digging a whole last semester and sending a month trying to salvage what he could. I’m not sure when report cards come out - i hope it’s not too ugly! S and i spent a couple hours yesterday cleaning his room and desk and backpack and he chose a new system for keeping track of homework, so i know he went to school this morning feeling like he had a fresh start.

My older S had 2 or 3 weeks after winter break, and he never minded at all, although I prefer semester breaks that coincide with winter break.

Lake42KS - Actually, Columbia Engineering is on my son’s list. Also, Carnegie Mellon (CMS, SCS and CIT) is another that specifically wants to see Math 1 or 2 and a science subject test.

Another week of vacation for D’12. They finished the semester with finals the week of Dec. 21. My 8th grader had to get up and go to school this morning. How painful for all of us!

Appreciate it, seiclan. Don’t understand why schools require SAT IIs when applicants took corresponding APs.

lake42ks - because not all schools offer corresponding AP classes and they like uniformity for comparison of student tests.

My 2012 daughter has decided at the last minute to apply for a spot at one of the United World Colleges to complete high school. AAAAAH! Truly, I think it would be a great opportunity if she got a spot but trying to get recommendations etc. two weeks before the deadline is crazy. I’m just hoping they’ll take her test scores off her transcript so I don’t have to have them sent in by College Board. I doubt I could get them submitted fast enough anyway.

Wow Apollo6 - I hadn’t heard of United World Colleges and looked it up online. It sounds fascinating. Where does your daughter hope to attend? Is it hard to be accepted? Good luck to her!

OK, I promised myself I’d take down Christmas decorations today…not sure if THAT’S going to happen.

That’s really interesting, Apollo6. Good luck to her!

Wow what an exciting and brave thing to try for Apollo! Madcap! Does she know where she wants to study?

Apollo, how terribly exciting! I know an adult who is a UWC alumna, and really, really loved the experience. Good luck to your D!

Apollo, I never heard of that program thanks for sharing.
Good luck to your D!

My daughter received her PSAT score today. Her 217 should beat the cutoff in Florida.

Way to go, D of gnusasuarus!

Congrats to D of gnusasuarus!

Congrats, gnusasuarus!

How is this for helicopting…D2 is looking for something to do this summer. I got online last week, found a privately funded program from our home state. They only allow each school to nominate 3 students to compete for one of 40 spots. Since we no longer live in the US, I wasn’t sure whether D2 would be eligible to compete, and the deadline is Jan 7. I emailed the director, to let her know that we are tax paying residents, but D2 is attending a school outside of the US. She emailed me back to let me know that they would allow D2 to apply, and they would even extend the deadline for her. Now D2 has 6 essays to write, a recommendation letter from her teacher, application to fill out. The program sounds very exciting and very humanities oriented, and the best part is it’s free.

D2 is applying to another summer program, which requires close to 10 essays. I told D2 that she will be able to re-use those essays next year. D1 never applied to any of those programs because it’s painful for her to write essays.

10 essays for a summer program? Horrors! But she’ll be totally ready for college apps. Excellent helicoptering oldfort, I salute you! May I do as well! And congrats to gnusosaurus and D-- that’s just wonderful!

Yes, congrats to gnusosaurus’ D (gotta change that long ID). We are still waiting for D2’s score.
