Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

Yes, it’s in. In our case it is very good news and one so-so, but I think she will be pleased. D2 went up in all sections. We are also done. Now it’s SAT IIs, but that won’t happen until May or June.

glido - congratulations on your daughter’s scores.

Good morning! I forgot SAT scores were out today - good luck to everyone who took the Jan tests!

pathways - I think you can still sign up for March for a while, it just costs a little more if you don’t do it by tomorrow.

Congrats to those who are done! S takes it in March I think - and I think he’ll be done no matter what he gets!

DS’s first SAT scores were much worse than he is capable of, as expected (remember that he refused to do any prep for this one). That said, his writing score was higher than I thought that he could do on his own. Math score definitely not reflecting his abilities. He will prep this spring with a SAT prep class/tutor and retake in June. If he needs to, he can always take them a third time in October (even ED schools accept the October test). I am happy that at least he does qualify for the full Florida Bright Futures scholarship with this test though (they need a minimum of a 1270 M/CR to qualify for the academic scholarship, which pays for a set amount per credit at Florida colleges). However, if he wants to go to a top (non HYPS) out of state school, he will need to bring up his scores at least 200 points IMO. Very doable though, IF he actually would practice for the next one!!!

Congratulations to those who’re done with SAT I! It’s reasonable to take it 2-3 times (particularly for boys), but the helpfulness of SAT I scores is overestimated IMO.

Add us to the list of people happy with the SAT scores that came out today. She is now done with ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests (hooray!).

Nothing left but AP exams and various contests.

Massive congratulations to those who are DONE WITH SATs!!! What a relief. D doesn’t take her first until March so I’m living vicariously.

Mathinokc–you are amazingly ahead of the game, I’m so impressed!

Pathways-- I’ve heard it said that time and maturation are such a big help that it’s really worth waiting a bit before another try. I think we will do March and then October here. For whatever its worth.

Congrats to all who have good SAT results! DS will take it again in May and we hope that will be it for him as well.

I came home yesterday to DS in major panic/anxiety mode. There was a mixup in when he thought his final exam for English was (his school runs on trimesters) and it is today…and they just got back the only other test in that class yesterday. Yikes! Fortunately, he went and found his teacher this morning, got “talked back down” and will take the test tomorrow. We are still seeking an effective way for him to handle the anxiety…it really debilitates him. Last term was horrible (that’s when we discovered it); we’d been doing much better this term until this.

Congratulations to all who took the Jan test and are happy with the scores! As Gwen said, I’m living vicariously. Wonderful news and great planning for you all.

Signed up DS to take the SAT I in March; it will be his first time. We plan on taking SAT2s on May 7th and then SAT I again in June and Oct, if necessary.

So glad to hear the good news from you all.

Very happy with CR and Math scores for daughter, amazed at low Writing score. Because of her LD she gets time and a half which means the writing section is after 4 hours of testing already, I bet she was so exhausted by that time she couldn’t focus and concentrate like she needs to. It was her first try so she’ll take it again in May and hopefully have better Writing score. It wouldn’t matter so much except that creative writing is her main focus as possible major. She has written an novel that she’s passing around to agents for publishing, if that happens the scores become less important I think!

Congrats to all the successful test takers! Double congrats to everyone who is done with exams!

I’m so happy to not be dealing with this with D’12. It’s a tense time for kids involved in many competitions. D’12 has 3 this week.

I’m puzzled (and pleased) by my 8th grader’s score, but that’s for a different group. . .

Pgh Momof 2

Bleck! on all teachers who can’t return tests promptly (or at all). Major cause for anxiety around here as well. The only “solution” we’ve come up with is to have D talk to the teacher involved…unfortunately all the teacher says is “don’t worry, it will be ok”. D wants actual feedback (ie you misread the prompt, I like more details, whatever). Good luck to your S on the test tomorrow!

Congrats to all on the SAT scores…

Pretty good day on the college front yesterday. D got assigned her first choice for GC. SAT CR score was almost perfect, M needs to come up a bit more, but good enough to avoid trying the ACTs as well.

Now we have to figure out the SATII strategy. Does she take them in May in the midst of APs or in June, the weekend after finals and days before leaving for an overseas summer program. Neither seem very good options. Anybody have experience with kids taking the SATII tests during AP season?

Congrats to all on the great SAT scores!,and good luck and best wishes to those who are planning to retake. My S will be taking them (again) in March.

1012mom - My oldest S took them in June after AP exams. That worked for him. S2 is planning to do the same thing. I think they both want/wanted to avoid them during AP time.

1012mom: I strongly recommend June - after the AP. Students study hard for the AP and that gets them ready for the SAT2. Mt DD even took one at a high school in the town where we were on vacation and did very well.

My son is taking them (the SAT 2’s) in May along with his 5 AP exams, the rationale being that he is studying anyhow. He is taking the Chemistry and the Physics (to see which he does better on). He took the Math 2 last year after precalculus. For my son, the June SAT is more important (since it will be the first test that he is actually going to prep for). He is not a natural standardized test taker but he is a good student. The SAT (and not his GPA, since he is in the top 5% of his class) will be his “gatekeeper” in terms of what schools will be on his final college list.

My D met with her GC. Her SAT scores are decent not sky high. She could reatke if she wants. Her GC suggested OCT if she chooses to retake. Isn’t that cutting a bit too close?

glido - SAT during a vacation? Tiger Mom?:)

Igloo, October is cutting it close but not too close. Many schools accept the November test as well. My son is taking it in June with the idea that October can be a third and final if he needs it (but hopefully not needed). Can she do June (or does she need to do subject tests then)?

She needs Lit subject test in June or May. Her GC claimed she would mature more in Oct than June. I am not buying it completely. She is slow to get started when school starts in Fall. She is also applying early to a few places by Nov 1. It will be good to know what her scores are when you apply. What do you think?

I think the answer as to when to take the SAT 2 (May or June) is very kid specific. DS plans to take the SAT2 Bio on May 7th. At least that is the plan now. The AP BIo is the next week. He will be prepared for both at the same time. The month between the AP and the June SAT2 means either he won’t study and forget some info, or he has to re-study or continue studying from the AP in May till June (unlikely). The only issue is that he now has ocean bowl the week before the SAT2, so not sure how much studying he will get in when he is preparing for ocean bowl. I think I will let him figure it out!

That is the issue with my son ^^. After the AP exams, there is NO WAY he is going to keep looking at that material for another month (not my kid). Also, with so many AP classes virtually over, he will have more time and feel more relaxed to actually prep for the June SAT reasoning test. So I concur, this is specific to each kid (when to take SAT 1 vs. SAT subject tests (May or June).
