Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

So in a year this thread is going to be three months of prom and diagnosis talk while we wait for results? Yikes.

<shiver></shiver>

I have already promised DS that I wouldn’t talk about any colleges from the time he applies until the time he gets financial aid packages unless we talk about visiting the capuses again. I thought that was a great plan, until he said, “what could we possibly have to talk about during that time anyway? the decision is out of my hand at tht point.” I didn 't have the heart to tell him that I would still be on here stressing with the rest of you.

Oldfort – It is ‘back to school shopping’…only you are shopping for the right school.

We don’t really talk much about college now. We know what ones we’re going to see over spring break, and we’re both looking forward to the trip. S is going to meet with at least one math professor on a college visit, so he needs to formulate his ideas about what he wants to talk about, but if nothing else, we’ll have a 10 hour drive - he can think about it then! He has three things he’s juggling right now outside of school, so I’m leaving college in the background for now.

What I really need to do is get my taxes done and fill out my FAFSA for my older son’s school. I’ve been successfully procrastinating on that for a while.

Novelisto - LOL. D2 needs her fix whenever we go back home. She misses the mall, food, and friends.

^Are the food and shopping not so good for you? Or is it just not so good because it is not “home”? Next job location you must ask for a place where you can shop till you drop…

Even though we are near great shopping malls and of course NYC, my D is so busy here with schoolwork, sports, and other ecs that shopping is not even on the horizon, and she only gets to shop on breaks or vacation for the most part anyway.

^^ Ditto that. Mail order is the only shopping around here this winter. My D was in a masterclass this afternoon. The musician asked kids what would make them smile/happy? My D’s answer was sleep.

just bumping this up from the 4th page

D finally nailed down her schedule: mornings she’ll be at the offsite humanities program for English and Social Studies; afternoons: "AP"Enviro (school is in the process of getting AP certified, so class will be taught at the AP level without the official designation); APUSH; AP Stats online and an independent study in photography. she’s happy, I’m happy and the principal is happy (we bypassed the useless GC, with the principal’s blessing ;))

we’ve planned a single college visit over spring break, so I feel like we are making progress. no Feb ACT scores yet cause she took it as a standby; once we get those we can plan the rest of her testing.

oh, and we woke up to snow again here in OH.:frowning: will this winter ever end?!

Great schedule PRJ! Best wishes on the ACT scores. We have SATs next Sat and then we wait to see how we will approach the rest of testing.

Sorry about your snow. We have tons of rain today which at first was depressing, but then I thought, “ah, spring rain is here. That means flowers are on the way!” I also planted three small indoor pots today with seeds, so that made me feel better too.

This week is going to be very rough in our house. The huge AP English lang paper is due on Wednesday and DS has major exams in at least 4 other subjects. DS procrastinated (as did many others in the class) on working on the paper) so now it is crunch time. DD came home from college for her spring break to a tense household. The marking period is over at the end of this month but there is only technically three weeks left, since March 14-18 is his spring break. It stinks that the sibling are on different spring break weeks, makes it impossible to plan any family trips. I am so very ready for this quarter to be over and done. I am ready for Junior year to be over and done too. I need my summer and my peace.

Senior year registration last week didn’t happen due to a major computer glitch on the part of the district. The school decided to do it on its own now. The kids came home with course request sheets on Friday which are to be filled out and submitted on Monday. Only issue is that the coveted electives that are limited in enrollment are not on the sheet!!! The students have to choose an alternate class and then send an email to the school requesting to be put into the coveted elective (Astronomy or Law). The email has to be dated and time AFTER Tuesday, March 8th or they will be deleted. The first 125 emails for each elective gets it, everyone else is stuck with the alternative class that they listed on their sheets on Monday. I am not very happy about this. There are almost 800 kids in the grade…many will be disappointed but I am not sure that this method is very fair. What about the kids who ride the bus and won’t get home until later, or the kids who have afterschool sports or clubs on Tuesday? Honestly, I cannot think of a more equitable way to do this but a time/dated email seems wrong to me.

DS has put for his senior schedule:
AP Gov/Econ honors (no AP Econ at his school),
AP Calculus BC,
AP Physics C,
AP Psychology,
AP Human Geography,
AP English Lit (but he is required to be put in it by district standards…I am going to fill out a parent override and put him in Honors English 4 instead…it is just too many AP classes for senior year!!!).,
Honors Marine Science 2 (which he is hopefully switching to one of the coveted electives…Astronomy). This is a tough schedule but it is MUCH EASIER than this year’s classes. I am so relieved that he will take an easier schedule next year!!!

seiclan - 6 Ap’s and you call that an easy schedule!

Two more weeks for my kid and the trimester will be over. Finally.

We are changing the English AP to honors so only 5 APs next year (and two are “easier APs”).

^^^ Yeah. What is he taking this year that makes you say that is an easier schedule?!

Seiclan - wow that seems rigorous! At my son’s school AP Science courses actually take up two course periods and count as two courses - one being a lab.

He is planning on taking:

AP Calculus AB
AP Physics B (+Lab 2 credits)
AP US Gov
World Literature
Lit Magazine
Theater Four

Cal1983 - My S1 is a freshman at UNC. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions either before or after you visit. Elon is on S2’s list. We were impressed with their Engaged Learning. I personally think it would be a good fit for my S2, but we’ll see what he thinks when he really starts applying next year. I’m in NC and we have had students from our high school go to Elon. To my knowledge, they have all been happy.

BUandBC82 - thanks for your offer! I was messing around with the edit feature and deleted my post! If we have questions about UNC, we will ask! And, I think we will stop by Elon.

seiclan- I understand where you are coming from. My older D had 2 APs jr year and 5 APs sr year and the latter was an easier time for her because jr year APUSH was a lot of work.

Not sure on D2’s sched yet. Not many AP opportunities for her, as she took the one in her language this year, and she took a science AP this year and will not have one available next. She is not an AP english/history type of kid. We are meeting with her college counselor this afternoon and will see what he has to say, but I think it will be fine. I don’t want her to add a class that isn’t that interesting to her just because it is an AP.

Micalh1 - This year he is taking:
AP Calculus AB
AP Physics B
AP English Language/comp.
AP Spanish Language
AP Chemistry
Honors US History
Honors Marine Science 1

These APs are crazy hard…all of them and he is not doing that well (for his abilities) because of the time that he has to spend on AP English (tons of all night papers). Next year as a senior, he will only have 2 “hard” AP’s (Calc BC and Physics C), the other 3 APs(psych, gov. and human geog) are not as time consuming by any means…thus, a much easier senior year!

seiclan your son will be ready to take on anything after these 2 years! He’s very brave and must be very motivated to sustain so much work!

Seiclan, I still don’t see why you claim it’s an easier schedule. Yes, the math and physics will be partial repeats on subject matter, but with challenging mathematically and conceptually (if taught properly). AP Gov and AP Psych will probably require more reading and writing than H.History. The English class should be comparable if he takes AP, easier if you can talk him down. Yes, AP HumGeo should be easier than AP Spanish, depending on his aptitudes. And regular Econ will probably get easier right around the time that the Calculus picks up. Marine Science should be comparable, but maybe he’ll find the more advanced subject matter more compelling, if he’s really into it.

My D12 really will have an easier schedule senior year, because she is substituting PE (next year) for APUSH (this year). She left her second required year of PE for last, on purpose, to give herself a little room to slack off. :D
