Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

PghMonof2, it sounds like a great project.

Thanks to all for the advice. DS did a sample test last night, and only missed one on the math, so I think it is best that he focus on CR.

The first scholarship application is in the mail, priority style. The emergency medical form has been sent to Girl’s State. She has 4 finals tomorrow including the class from hell…history of the civil war. And trust me, she will know how many union troops were on the battle of vicksburg before tomorrow.

Study study study. I am sitting at her ballet class as I insisted on driving her the 20 miles because we have severe storm threat and I have been a little traumatized by the these terrible tornadoes lately. I cried a little at work last night but luckily my nursing assistant is one of my best friends. She is suffering a limbo loss and severe anxiety so we cry to each other a lot.

I love watching D in ballet. Glad for the storms.

Oh! And senior pics are scheduled for June! The photographer is a young artsy/edgy guy who lives in,southeastern Ohio in the middle of nowhere. He took Sr pics of three of D’s fellow dancers and they were so good. The price is more than reasonable too! I am so glad her pics are gonna be more artistic and less traditional…suits her I think. And as a very good omen, he graduated from the college of wooster.

Sometimes amidst all this chaos, tornadoes, wind and fits of anxiety the universe brings you what you need. This is a gift I think.

My oldest (DD’12) was accepted to her summer program in Washington, D.C. with a very generous scholarship. She had to write an essay for the scholarship application - it will serve as a college app essay (So, she has one written - her goal is three written this summer.) And my youngest (DS’23) just completed kindergarten!

Congrats, glido! Your DD’12’s plans sound wonderful. Hope she’s ready for heat and humidity - not sure where you are. I remember going to DC for the first time in high school from Alaska - thought I was going to die.

texaspg, the group DS is working with deals with Inuaqtiut (sp??), as well as basic literacy in English and French. And we just heard from his host family that he’s good to go next week…whew! I have a feeling things are pretty laid back up there - which is a really good fit for Mr. Disorganization.

Boys State orientation was last night and they did not collect paperwork (which I had filled out). They will collect it all the night the boys leave and if anyone forgets anything, they can’t get on the bus and a delegate goes. I find this so odd. Why not collect everything ahead of time, instead of making it a two-hour ordeal before they drive from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.?

Just got in from the Phoenix session of “Exploring College Options” that featured Harvard, Georgetown, UPenn, Duke and Stanford. There appeared to be about 400 people there. This is the second session like this that DS and I have attended. Not sure that they are worth the time and energy because the handouts and the presentations don’t really cover anything one can’t get from the website. My son graded the presenters and concluded that Georgetown was the best. So now he has added them to his list. Just what we needed–another very selective school.

Tomorrow in the AM is the All School Awards Ceremony. He and two of his classmates are receiving recognition for attaining the National Forensics League’s Academic All-American award. Speech and Debate is very much his passion so I am glad for him to get the recognition. Tuesday he starts “boot camp” to prepare for his second trip to Nationals, this year for Student Congress.

That will take the first half of the summer. The second half will be spent on college essays, getting a piece ready for Original Oratory for next year, and doing some reading for his senior thesis. I am sure he will work in some Dungeons and Dragons and time for Howie’s Game Shack.

Truly cannot believe that I have a senior!

Pamom, your son sounds amazing!

Well today is 4 FINALS! Including History of the (Damn) civil war. And sat results looming, only a matter of hours. It is kind of funny how that worked out. The cumulative 4.0 rests upon this civil war test, and the sat results will tell us her chances at certain colleges. Granted she is taking the sat again along with the act…still I am a nervous mom today. Whatever happens, I am definitely proud of her.

Senior year schedule is rough: ap bio., ap English, ap Spanish, physics, precalculus, economics and some some electives like graphic arts and performance (drama.) I know this probably doesn’t compare to a lot of the kids on this sight, but for her small rural highschool, this is considered a rigorous path, aside from the math of course. :P

Glido - Mostly lurker here, but I have a Kindergartener as well. I’ll see you on the Parents of 2023 board!

Wow - everybody’s making tons of progress out there! S had his last day of school yesterday! Woohoo!

And yes, the tune playing during breakfast was Alice Cooper…

“no more pencils…no more books…no more teachers…dirty looks…
SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER!”

Putting a break on good news, My kid is stumbling before reaching the finish line. The kid started out strong, stayed strong but the school year dragged on a little too long. Another week of classes before finals.

To all the mid-west/southern friends - my heart aches for you, tragic storms & floods. Prayers & thoughts to all of you. It keeps all this in perspective. We are so blessed.Couldn’t help but cry over the families, leaving HS graduations and walking right into that horror last Sunday. Used to live in mid-west, hate that storm siren sound.

DD is finishing class projects, onto finals, June SAT and completing resume this weekend (along with all the extra curricular school activities over the long weekend.) Come on summer! Just a few more weeks…Alice Cooper indeed.

DS called me yesterday afternoon to tell me that he was going to be in a mall fashion show and needed a ride for his friends. So, he added that to an already busy week. I have to say, it was a proud Mom moment. We had an unofficial “SAT Bootcamp” scheduled at our house this weekend. Ds has invited over everyone thaqt is takding the test on the 4th and they will be working on flashcards, creating essay prompts (thanks to the thread "How to get a 12 in 10 days"that we got from CC) and doing math drills. I will man the voc flashcards and supply the pizza apparently. If only he had started this weeks ago, I would feel better about it. If they need to take it again, I am happy to offer up my house all summer for this kind of activity.

Ha, No such thing in my house. My kid is also taking SAT on the 4th. The kid planned outings with her friends this weekend. I am letting her. She has to blow the steam off.

Hang in there, Iglooo. I think DS’ class is mostly dragging themselves across the finish line (to hear the teachers talk, anyhow). If this is junior-itis, I don’t want to think about next year!

MizzBee, DS gets his SAT results back tomorrow (Lord willing and the creek don’t rise) - he used the “12 in 10 days” method, after a very disappointing essay score the first time around. I’m curious to see what he gets this time - the template seemed very simplistic, but DS was willing to give it a shot.

sending good vibes to iglooo’s S - it is so hard to keep the energy going to the end of the school year!

I’ll echo that. There have been an unusual number of mega-storms this year, and it is heart breaking. I had a run in with a tornado this week - I was about 15 minutes from the end of a performance when a tornado came our way - we all ran for an interior hallway and 30 seconds later the lights went out. After it passed and we went outside there was lots of debris in the street, including a couple 20-foot long branches on cars that weren’t from any trees on the street where we were. The news later reported that it was a tornado. I think it was pretty close to us, but it wasn’t real strong and certainly nothing like what we’re all seeing on the news these days. Scary enough!

Great idea! (making notes for my 8th grader). The cool thing about having three kids is I feel little bit less hapless and incompetent with each kid. I think I’ll try this when my youngest is getting into SAT season!

It is disappointing, I know. My son started this third quarter. Today he is taking his Calculus final and last night, instead of going over the material, he watched the Heat vs. Chicago Bulls game! Thankfully, at least if he blows the final and his chance at an A for the semester, the Heat WON!!! ;)

Good luck to all of your children who are inching or racing to the end. We’re almost there.

Today is the last day of school for seniors, which means most of S’s longtime best friends. They are the buddys who live a block or two away and who would wander into each others kitchens scavenging for food. Whenever S was missing, I could call their houses knowing he was there. He was so lucky to grow up with such a compatible group of friends. We’ll all really miss them.

PgHMomof2, I will anxiously be awaiting to hear how the 12 in 10 worked. It did seem simplistic, but I hate the essay portion of the SAT/ACT anyway. How can anyone be thoughtful in 25-30 minutes! I am especially grateful to CC for tst prep.

The NBA finals were bittersweet in our house. I am a Bulls fan and a LeBron fan. I am not happy for the result, but at least I have more to watch.
