mspearl, Miami of Ohio has linguistics - it’s on DS’ list. We’ll see if he likes it enough to apply.

Nice to have a kid who knows how to follow instructions to the T!

mspearl- my good friends daughter sounds similar to your daughter except she was an artist not cheerleader. Scores and interests were similar also- SAT math disproportionally low. She eventually pulled it up into the low five hundreds the third time. She just finished her freshman year at NYU! She also got into wells, occidental, reed. Don’t be discouraged! Your daughter sounds amazing!

Since I have a preppy liberal as well, I get the vibe. Carleton and Macalester would be reaches that have linguistics, and at least one of those schools meets 100% need. Ohio University, Miami of Ohio, Indiana University, are more choices. Hope College in Michigan is a CTCL school, but my DS had no interest in that school, so I have no real info on it. If she plans to go graduate school, maybe she could do a different undergad degree then take the large university as an undergad.

Does anyone know anything about blogs and working for one? My son, who is editor-in-chief of two school publications, one of which he founded and the other is the school paper, bumped into an opportunity to be an intern for a local blogger who blogs to about 9,000 people about local news in our local area (where not much of great significance happens). I don’t understand much about blogging at all. I’m wondering how colleges look at such a thing. Apparently, he’d be taking information and turning it into articles. It seems like it’s worth doing because writing/editing is his most standout EC and this is additional experience.

By the way, I was pleased to see son spend some major time with a college guide yesterday, reading carefully, making notes and comparing schools. I’m so glad he’s taking initiative on this.

mimk6: I have a blog at salon.com… I use a pseudonym and usually blog about my feelings about politics/current events…At salon they have tips on how to get noticed etc.
If he is working for someone it sounds like he may be doing research for that person? I don’t understand how he could be blogging himself to the audience. I think colleges would look favorably upon an activity like this! I know at salon anyone can start a blog and they have editor’s pick everyday so some people get really noticed. I don’t know if this helps or not. :)

mimk6, working on a blog (and having his own) can be wonderful. I know of one kid that blogged for a local newspaper’s website that got into some very selective schools. It can be a double-edge sword depending on the material, however. Just imagine if the blog is controversial and too personal. It is out there on the internet forever, and fair game for emplyers, interviewers, adcoms, etc. Even that may not be a problem if the arguments are thoughtful. It just gets tricky when a blogger abandons diplomacy for punditry and seeks to alienate and inflame.

Thank you so much for the advice. I will passit on to her. She will be taking the ACt. soon, Unfortunately she needs a higher score on her math Sat for the major she wants.
congrats to everyone done, i was hoping we would have this past us, but guess not. She will prep all summer then retake in the fall. Sometimes I wish they could take in the summer as they are so busy with their EC’s and studies it is hard to prepare. anyway thank you again!

At least the ACT comes in September, so the bulk of the studying over the summer will be retained. It was around 9/11 last year, so I expect it will be the 2nd weekend in September again.

Okay, so the “blog” says something like “the blog about your town” but as I looked at it, it seems more like an online local newspaper. It has news about what’s going on and various sections – news, food, people, etc. as well as an opinion section. So I think he’d be working on articles. It sounds a bit different than what I usually think of when I think of blogs. I generally think of them as one person opining on various subjects or one particular subject.

Sounds like a great opportunity to research, get practice talking to adults on the telephone or through email (skills a lot of 16year olds do not have).

Hope everyone had a nice Memorial weekend! I’m so exhausted from the long weekend that I decided to take today off :D.

D’s creative drawing won a major award. I’ll be going to DC with her for a reception and her art work will be placed on display in the Capitol for a full year! PCM and I thank God for her talent, which certainly didn’t come from me. We are very proud of what she accomplished in a short time - only started drawing class less than a year ago! We already took down from our walls the paintings we bought and replaced them with her art works. Maybe it’s a parent thing, but our walls certainly look a lot prettier to me now. Even though D has no plan to major in art (econ is still her thing), she certainly has found a worthwhile hoby.

Junior Prom was a blast for her. After going through some 20 dresses with her mom, she finally chose a dark silk nightgown. She looked absolutely stunning in it. It was bitter-sweet for me to realize that my baby is now a mature and beautiful young woman. All I can say is that her prom date was a lucky boy.

May SAT I scores came back. Solid improvement over her first try. Even though she improved in all three sections, D believes she can still do better in two sections. It looks like another date with the College Board in October :(.

PCP-- Congratulations! That’s a major coup! Is she interested in art programs for college, or is this a side interest?

It’s so hard to believe that in less than 36 hours I’ll have a high school senior! And suddenly it’s summer!

Mine magically became a senior on Saturday when “her” seniors graduated. I think being a senior will feel real on Thursday evening when she helps with the first orientation for the new juniors at her school.

Summer reading doesn’t seem to be too bad. World List just assigned Anna Karenina. Hopefully my daughter has learned from her seniors not to procrastinate on it – the group last year was trying to finish it during dorm move-in. Western Civ assigned The Oresteia by Aeschylus and some Old Testament. The Old Testament is a collection of things she’s read before, so it will be easy reading.

PCP - what an achievement for your daughter in art - congrats to her!

And hi and congrats to everyone else - I’ve been out of town for a few days - there’s a lot going on in this thread. I guess it comes with the territory of being the next class up to bat!

S’s SAT II score came back great - he is officially done with testing. Yay! He says he’s happy with what he expects his second semester grades to be, so I guess it’s time to enjoy the summer and start getting real about the college list. He’s had a bad start to the summer (why any girl would ever break up with him in a million years I’ll never understand…;)) so I’m trying to think of something fun to do today. Once my three sleeping beauties are awake anyway.

D has to show up for 1 1/2 hours of school today. She is furious I made her go. It is her English final period and they don’t have a final as their research paper was considered the final. So the teacher is giving extra credit today and they will be doing some busy work…

Tomorrow is art history and western civ. Final. Art history consists of showing up as they also turned in a project days ago. So western civ. Is the only test left!! Whoohoo!

Younger D doesn’t go in until 1. It is hot as an oven here in Ohio!
But we are all so happy summer is here. D drove her sister and exchange student sister to the mall yesterday which is an hour away. D2 spent $90 she had saved up for summer clothes and got lots of cute stuff. D1 had no $ of course so we gave her $35 and told her to find some bargains. She found an adorable summer dress at hollister for $20 and a cute shirt for $7. Senior picture clothes!

On the way home they got stuck on the highway for an hour, just 3 miles from their exit due to an accident. D2 took a picture of this pickup truck covered with anti Obama, anti peta, pro hunting stickers and the guy driving caught her and purposely tried to keep them from merging right so they could get to their exit. They called and were screaming that someone was trying to kill them! Their dad talked them through it and they ended up merging in time to make their exit. I told D2 to not take pics of obviously angry people. So, I guess they learned a life lesson and had a bit of an adventure!

It is great that she is not complaining about our strict budget. She knows we are doing everything we can to save $ for next year. I am very proud of both my girls…they know how to make money stretch!

PCP - congratulations. Get those CDs ready for mailing out art supplements!

Congrats to PCP and D! I’d love to learn when you saw the artist in her (something’s there years ago probably).

Congratulations PCP that is so exciting!
