oldfort and cherryhill - Under my S’s To Do List on college board it says to check back on November 23 for November 6 SAT scores.

re: stats-- for D, it would really not be worthwhile. Stats is apparently pretty heavy on graphs and charts, two places D draws a total blank. And she’s a theater/music kid, with a big interest in history and social science-- no math or science in her future (and rejoice, everyone, because you really do not want her as your surgeon!) So I think she’ll have AP Psych, AP Art History, Shakespeare, Music Theory, honors chorus and voice next year–things she really wants to study and will pour heart and soul into. And we’ll see what happens after that.

Great idea re the Starbucks gift card, thank you! Those of you who are waiting for SAT’s are lucky-- PSAT’s don’t come till December!

oldfort - I think Nov SAT scores will be available online Nov 23 - 5 days!

Some nice news, my son was inducted into the Science National Honor Society last night. Of course, he told me yesterday morning on the way to school that we had to be at the ceremony that very night and he had no details (ie dress code). I kept my mouth shut when he got into the car yesterday evening wearing a casual short sleeve button down shirt and Khaki slacks (I would have suggested dress slacks, a belt and a long sleeve button down shirt). I am just happy that he took the initiative to join/apply for this academic club. We are both making progress in the quest for his independence.

seiclan, Congratulations on the honor! That is great.

Congratulations!! Hey, at least he didn´t come down with flip flops. He actually sounded very appropriately dressed (maybe not to your standard.:).

Congrats Seiclan! Great news for you and your DS. I think he sounded appropriately dressed. At least it wasn’t jeans and a tshirt.

Congrats to Seiclan’s son! Sounds like our house - “Oh, by the way mom, there’s a ceremony tonight for something. Time? I don’t know - tonight. Gotta go…”

seiclan - congrats! someone over on the College Class of 2013 thread coined the phrase “evidence of dawning maturity” or EDM - I’d say your S just demonstrated EDM!

thanks all for the heads up on the Nov 23 release of Nov 6 SAT results. I will confess to my friends on this thread that I am a bit concerned about D2’s scores. D1 was an awesome test taker - no prep, often too little sleep, etc. etc. and all her standardized test scores were stellar (couldn’t say the same thing about her grades, but that’s another story :o) D2 is a different animal - she is plenty bright, but doubts herself constantly and that doubt plays out in school and test performance. so we shall see…

unless you attend D’s HS, where the results arrive at the school in December but aren’t distributed until January :(

PinotNoir - I haven’t forgotten about your question re: Denison. since I am just a “townie” without an official connection to the college, I wanted to make sure my assessment was accurate. confirmed by friends who know Denison better than I do: the vibe and student body mixed - preppier and wealthier and more conservative than, say, Oberlin, but still plenty of liberal, politically active kids. students are pretty serious about academics. generous financial aid and successful domestic and international admissions efforts have increased campus diversity. when you get ready to visit, ask me about the best restaurants in town ;)

Thanks for the Dennison info, PRJ!

I feel for you about D2’s test scores, but maybe they’ll be just fine! And taking it this early will leave her time to retake. My older son isn’t a great test taker either, and I’m not sure why - I don’t think he gets nervous. He took it twice (Dec and spring of junior year I think) and improved by maybe 140 points (can’t remember exactly). He didn’t really study in between, but his school did offer a $25 group that got together 2 or 3 times and took a practice test, and I think that helped. Actually, thinking about it now - he is the kind of person that is pretty uncomfortable with new situations, so just getting familiar with it probably helped him a lot. And he still didn’t have the CC definition of great scores, but he had a lot of success with college admissions!

Our school sends out PSAT scores the last day of school before Christmas.

PRJ - D2 is not a good test taker. As soon as I saw the date, I already started expectation management with D2 - “Honey, this is only your first time taking it, no matter what happens you could still take it again, and a lot of schools super score it now. Would you like to sign up for the Jan test?” This is really a damage control for me. It is the day before all of our guests arrive for Thanksgiving, last thing I need is to have a major melt down from D2. She is a funny kid, usually so composed and together, but when she has a melt down, it´s not pretty.

oldfort - I feel for you as I have a D who struggles with test taking also. I will have my fingers crossed for you and all the others who’s kids are waiting for their scores next week.

D is signed up for her first SAT in January. She plans to spend time over Christmas break reviewing the areas she knows she is weak in.

ah, oldfort, the difference is that my D will be oblivious to the fact that scores are available on November 23! so there is no need for me to manage her expectations, just mine! I will check the scores before we get into the car to drive to the in-laws that afternoon, and then will decide how and when to discuss.

PRJ, Lucky you. My D would hear from her friends at school that the scores are out. They will probably compare the numbers. Otherwise, I could just pretend that it comes out after Thanksgiving.

PRJ… DITTO!! My DS is oblivious to the fact that the 23rd results will be online… I am saying the same things to myself, " he can always take him again, it is his first time as a junior" etc. I will probably just text him the results. Of course, I hate the date!!! We will have a house full of extended family and it’s Grandparent’s day at my kids school, so it should be interesting. I guess if it’s good news he will have a lot of people to celebrate with. He had GREAT scores on his PSAT last year, but his practice tests were not that great…so I have NO idea how he will do. My instinct is that he will do better on the REAL test because he admitted that he never really tried that hard on the practice tests… he has always been this inconsistent… AHHHH!!!

HI, I share your waiting anxiety…wish D had taken fall SATs (shorter wait!). Last year the school gave the kids their sophomore PSATs after break in late January. Think I will bug her GC in mid-December so she knows which sections to focus on during the break to prep for January 22. Is there a way for a student to access PSAT scores online or must one wait for the school?

pathways –

Last year you could access the PSAT online, but not until you got the info from the school. Seems backwards, doesn’t it?

Posting to this thread for the first time.

S2 is a junior and we took him to tour a few schools in October (day trips) - Cornell (where S1 is a freshman), Colgate, Hamilton & SUNY Geneseo. It looks like he is leaning toward the smaller schools, but I would prefer a mid-size school for him - like 4-6K, so he doesn’t ‘out grow’ it. It seems like there aren’t many schools that size in the NE that are academically strong, yet not impossible to get into (like Dartmouth and Yale). I am trying to convince him to take a spring break trip to Davidson/Wake Forest, but he says he doesn’t want to be that far from home.

The good news is he took the ACT in October and did great - I was hoping he would get at least a 30 on his first try with no prep (treated it like a practice exam for him) and he got a 34!! OMG - I was shocked when I saw the score (that’s like a 1510/1600 on the SAT).

He is definitely into the whole college process, which is nice for me since I am pretty much OCD about it (this is my 3rd and final time thru - D1 is a senior).

Anyway, I only read a few pages back on this tread, but hope to be able to share this process for the next year with like-minded parents. It will be a wild ride…

Welcome Kttmom. Congrats on such a high score on the ACT. Wow! What did you DS think about Geneseo? We have not visited yet, but it is on our list. I’m not sure what to make of it since it is not ranked along with the national LACs; it is considered a regional LAC. I’ve heard great things about Wake Forest.

DS’12 is my oldest; with two remaining in the wings. I’ll be in your shoes in 6 years. Welcome to the boards and good luck launching number 3!

Wow, what a great ACT score! Congratulations! I’m glad you’re here, Kttmom, you can give those of us who are going through this the first time (and for me, the only time) some pointers, I’m sure.
