Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

Gwen - I agree, it gets rural very quickly in parts of New England. I was a teacher of the blind and visually impaired. It’s a low incidence population, so I traveled.

PN - I already looked online today, just in case they put them up early. They didn’t.

I looked too. :o

I hadn’t looked. But…I had thought about it ;)

I am already practicing what I am going to say tomorrow if it should go south. D1 is home for Thanksgiving, maybe she could be kind of a buffer.

Good luck to everyone.

Good luck - I hope it’s good news for all!

Old fort - care to share that scripted conversation  just in case we need it too :(

“Honey, you have until Nov 2011 to take the test again.”
“There are a lot of colleges that don’t care about test scores.”
“1550 is a good score (out of 1600 that is).”
“Lets go shopping, maybe it would make you feel better. New shoes on me.”

I am hoping in my sleep tonight I could come up with better ones.

I guess I’m the first one to look. Let’s just say my son is not one and done :frowning: . Math and CR were okay, but writing, ugh. Perhaps it’s time to try the ACT! I’m sending wishes for happy scores for all!!

BUandBC - I think we’re in the same boat! Math and Writing were exactly what he hoped for, but CR was well below what he’d gotten on his one practice test, and below what he wanted. I’ll leave it up to him whether or not he wants to retake.

Us too :frowning: CR was way lower than what we were expecting. Writing essay was great and math he breezed. I wonder if overall CR was harder than usual :(

Same here. CR lower than practice tests, but really not a surprise given her slow reading. Ah well, I didn’t expect her to be “one and done” so on we go. Happy thanksgiving everyone!

D2 is opposite, she di ok with CR and writing, but need to do over for math.

I am practicing my lines now.

Happy Thanksgiving.

ds’s scores are above average but not what he’d hoped for. he took without prep. he’s taking ACT in Dec. so we’ll see what the ACT score comes back at before deciding whether or not he’ll retake SAT in the spring.

we looked at the SAT median ranges (used peterson’s). when you review those ranges it helps puts things in perspective. there are many schools for which he’d be well within the mid 50 percent ranges so that’s encouraging.

condor, That’s a good way to look at it. We don’t know her score yet. My D didn’t check her score. She didn’t know it was out already before leaving for school. I am worried about her CR. That’s her strong point but she didn’t practice it at all focusing on math and writing.

Hugs and cheers (as appropriate) to everyone reading scores this morning. Oldfort is right, there’s another year ahead for the do-over.

My D should be spending this weeklong school holiday practicing for the ACT. As of today, she’s only done 1 section. Ugh. This week is her best chance. There’s really not much time left before Dec 11.

Oh well. There’s still another year, right?

Do you get a week-long break? My D would love that. They get Thursday and Friday off. That’s about it. WEdnesday is a full day.

For my D, after seeing the score if she wants to repeat, I will say just one more time. We’ll just modify the school list after two sittings.

Yup - still another year! My son decided he does want to retake, so I just signed him up for March 12. Hard to believe, but it’s the only date he can do for the rest of the school year other than June 4, and he’s on summer break by then and doesn’t want to have that hanging over his head.

Just FYI, here are the remaining dates:
Dec 4
Jan 22
Mar 12
May 7
June 4

Yes, we get a full week off for Thanksgiving.

But, as a trade-off, Good Friday and Easter Monday are the only holidays between Pres Day and Memorial Day. It makes for a long, rough winter/spring.

thanks igloo. we’re in an ACT state so ds is looking forward to taking the ACT.
we were encouraged with his writing essay score. he’s a math/science kid so for him to score as well as he did on the essay was very uplifting.
the petersons search lets you sort by the SAT midrange once you bring up the results so that is definitely a big help. it gives the kids a concrete way of looking at their score. they know they could benefit by an upward movement in their score to get them into different ranges.
pinotnoir-thanks for the heads up on those dates.

Two things regarding SAT scores -

 1. many schools still don’t concern themselves much with the writing section, most have remedial writing as a freshman class.

2) the January date for the SAT can include (for a fee of course) receiving a copy of the test back with corrections so your child can see what still needs to be worked on.

As condor says, CC is a bit skewed with scores, look up what schools match your child’s scores, there will be many excellent choices.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
