Crossing my fingers regarding the Calgrant for your D.

@Jane345: My S '13 (college) questioned his choice, a full ride to a safety LAC, as everyone questioned why he did not attend the top 40 schools he was accepted to. I did not understand financial aid, and could not afford almost full tuition.

Fast forward, S is ready to graduate with honors as a physics/philosophy double major & is heading to grad school before deciding on med school. He will enter med school debt free, including grad school. He had tons of research opportunities and interned at Medtronic 2 summers in a roll & heading to Brazil to do a research project with a professor on sabbatical from our flagship U. An opportunity placed before him by one of his current professors at my son’s LAC. My son realized it’s not the name or size of the school that matters, but the opportunities the school affords students and the ones you create by shining in the classroom, and jumping at every opportunity available that is set forth in your pathway via networking and professor connections with other colleges and universities.

Your son loved his school before even applying and once on campus and away from his HS classmates will remember why he chose the school that he did. This season of doubt will pass soon.

Ding Ding Ding!!! Ring the bell, we have a decision!!!
We were up at Cal Lutheran for admitted student day today. We were in the bookstore looking at sweatshirts and I said “Don’t worry, I’ll buy you a sweatshirt online or something when you make your decision” She turned to me and said "I want to make it now, I want to go here and I don’t want to agonize anymore "

We went outside and sat on a bench because I wanted to make sure she wasn’t just “Settling” after her dream school disappointment and wanted to make sure proximity to boyfriend wasn’t the deciding factor. She goes “Mom, I’m not that stupid to go somewhere just for a guy. I know those things don’t last forever.” Her main reasoning, she just didn’t want to go to school in her back yard(San Diego State) and wanted the very best school in a location near LA. And the smaller supportive fit for her where she can shine in the small pond.

Oh, and they have really nice freshman dorm setup with 2bdrm suites with living room. Only 4girls sharing the bathroom.

Walked around a little more and then went straight into office and paid the deposit! We’re done.

Best part, they bring their own furniture for the living area and I’m going to get all excited designing that with her!!

Hooray, coral! So happy for you and your DD. I know this was a rollercoaster ride for both of you and so glad that she found her place.

Congrats coralbrook! I really liked Cal Lu when we researched it, though it would have killed me to have her on the other coast! Their dorms did indeed look very nice. RIT’s dorms are a shoebox!

Corolbrook, fantastic news! Congrats!

Coralbrook, Tears rolling down my face as if I know you and your family! Congratulations! I’ve been following the thread like a best selling novel cheering for you and your daughter…well done mom!!

The 2nd edition of “Who’s Kid is Going Where”.

For those that missed it, I am compiling a list via PM so that the thread is not clogged up with long lists. This is where each child has decided to attend - not all acceptances. I went back several pages in addition to the PMs sent. I apologize if I missed anyone. Send me a PM if you’d like me to add your child on the next list. I’ll wait until a have a handful before adding on.

New additions should be in bold (assuming I do the formatting correctly!)

Congratulations Coral! And everyone else added to the list! We have an impressive list of schools on here. Thanks mamaduck for updating this list

My S is going to tell me today what his decision is-- I already know (at least 99% sure), but will wait to post until after he officially tells me. No additional $$ from LMU so that basically elimated LMU from the list of options

I am between a rock and a hard place… All the money I had for my twins to go to college … My husband used to buy investment properties. At the time he told me we would sell them to pay for the boys college. Now he is refusing to sell and wouldn’t let me take money out of my 401k… Which I saved up for the boys. What do I do???

I cried with her right there in the bookstore. We hugged for a long time. It was very emotional.

Mom1006, are you still married or is this your ex that won’t sell? Is there a severe shortage for tuition and he is forcing the twins to choose lowest cost college? Is there rental income from the property? Maybe he will agree to allow rental income towards tuition?

I understand that he might want to hold onto good real estate for future retirement income, but there has to be a compromise somewhere. Maybe he will allow withdrawals from retirement savings for tuition as long as real estate is targeted for future retirement.

coral - I’m so thrilled for both you and your daughter! I’m sure that she will be very happy at Cal Lutheran!

Mom1006 - I’m sorry for this serious situation. Did your husband suggest how you will now pay for the boys’ colleges?

We visited University of West Florida on Friday, and lo and behold, DD actually really liked it! It’s a bit large for her taste (almost 13,000 students) compared to the small LACs that she really loves, but it’s pretty small for a FL public university, many of which have 40,000(+) students. We have one more school to visit, Lycoming College, and then she’ll have to decide. We appealed our FA decision to Lycoming last week and they gave us another $3900 per year! So hopefully, next Sunday or Monday, I will be able to post our final decision!

Great news!!

Well I have been working since I was eighteen. We have been helping his brother since we have been married-- yes still married. But him not wanting to sell the properties-- is recent. We have been flipping for a while. When I told him that I was going to help the boys pay with my retirement money. He said No that he would not sign off on that. Both the boys got good grants and scholarship. Our out of pocket would be 10k per each boy. They are willing to find jobs to help out. My husband got a sizable heirtance from his parents and our house is paid for… Not sure what his problem is
