Just re: printers, my older two never had one in college, and my '13-er will not have one either. I’m not sure anybody turns in hardcopy any more anyway. I don’t think oldest did his last couple of years, and I’m pretty sure middle (current sophomore) has ever turned in paper.

Kat2013 Thanks for the List of Essentials link. Good read.

Printers… oh dear… there’s something else I had not thought of… gotta check, but my money’s on UC Davis uses no paper - they’re green. Let’s hope! Our printers have always had a built in stress meter which causes the ink cartridge to fail if a paper is printed at the last minute.

Some faculty have students turn in digital, some require paper based. Anything over 2 pages, I require it to be on paper. I find grading digital papers to be a huge pain. I know lots of other instructors feel the same way. Although, if I had TAs to do my grading, I probably would not care. But since I have to do it…

I think many faculty now require digital papers so they can run it through the plagiarism checkers.

Today’s Haiku is dedicated to all parents sending kids off for their first time, alone.

Dear Child Travels
Plane Incommunicado
Trust in my Training

Haystack: They already do that in high school. They submit the papers to be checked and submit a hard copy to their teacher. DS had a cheap printer in his room – he could print out his basketball tickets, boarding passes etc.

Now practice your breathing. He’ll be fine. My kids have both done this several times and managed to navigate.

But, if you’re still concerned, book him on Delta next time. They have inflight wifi. ;)

Thanks SOG, practicing the Lamaze breathing now, listening to Freddie sing “Save Me.”

…ah…sigh…DS just texted that he is safely on the plane now…with all his carry-ons.

Next on the playlist will be “Spread Your Wings” and then “These are the Days of Our Lives.”

Maybe I’ll go research potential printers to buy (with small footprints)… I think a small one could be handy at times for them.

Listening to the fourth stanza of “…Days…”:

“You can’t turn back the clock, you can’t turn back the tide
Ain’t that a shame?
I’d like to go back one time on a rollercoaster ride
When life was just a game
No use in sitting and a thinking on what you did
When you can lay back and enjoy it through your kids
Sometimes it seems like lately I just don’t know
Better sit back and go with the flow”

Okay, I’ll try to go with that flow as our cruise ship slices through the waters.

Your son is miles ahead of me DDHM, I haven’t started packing! My flight leaves at 6 AM tomorrow (leave the house at 3 AM - groan) and I have lots to do before then. I’M SO EXCITED FOR CPW THOUGH!

Also I have narrowed my choices to two, and have financial aid from both! And they are both affordable (one moreso, but the other miiiiiiight match) so I’m ecstatic.

I got good deals on printers last fall (Black Friday) so they both have one. It’s just nice to have and they don’t take up that much space. Laundry is “free” at their school as well so no need for hunting down quarters or making sure your laundry card has enough money on it!!

The best “free” laundry deal is still at Davidson. It’s one of many reasons we were a bit rueful when that one fell off the list.

[Davidson College - Laundry Services](http://www3.davidson.edu/cms/x28180.xml)

I tried to get the kids to look at Davidson just because of the laundry service but even that wasn’t enough of a draw for them :D.

That laundry and its namesake have an interesting history. (I’m near Mama Lu’s birthplace.)

Unic: Don’t forget your photo ID. Have a great flight and if you think you might attend, focus on choosing a good match for your dorm choice. Friday you can check out a lot of the academics too. Have fun!

Well, I am jealous of those with free laundry. UC Davis has a laundry card…yikes! DD13 has been doing her own since 8 yrs old but she has a bad habit of washing and drying only a few things and not a full load. That could get pricey on a pay per use card. :(

Checked out shipping packages - for UCD if she’s in a residence hall no problem…Yay for the service desk. If she’s in a campus apartment the management does not accept packages. That could be an issue. Taxi to the FedEx or UPS office? Boo! Hang on a second, I have an aunt 20 miles away who will likely love an excuse to visit campus and play deliveryman! Problem solved. :-)

Oh and Stevema…thanks for the reminder to get the printer at Black Friday. I’ll have that luxury as I spend an extended time doing the limbo here on this fine ship. DD13 says they get a large number of copies/ printouts on an account but I agree with Haystack’s graphic depiction of the 15 minutes 'till class scenario. I think Haystack knows my kid. Or my kid is not that unique? Say it isn’t so!

Speaking of printers, S will need a laptop. Are the purchase through the schools deals really good or do you look for a sale?

Kat2013–depends on the purchase program but typically they are better deals on certain computers than you can get in the store or online, but usually only for Dell and Apple at most schools.

Thanks SteveMA. I probably should have looked 1st! The school S is leaning towards offers “deals” on Lenovo & their “deal” is $150 MORE than my quick google search! :D

Laundry: S2 had a system freshmen year. He would wait until a cute girl walked down the hall carrying her laundry basket, he would then follow with his laundry basket, act stupid and she would end up doing his laundry for him. He came after an entire year in the dorms and never even opened the laundry detergent we sent with him.

Kat2013–just make sure you are comparing apples to apples–for the older kids, the college buy plan was a much better deal. They got a faster processor, better “line” of computer, 4 years of on-site repairs and more memory for less than what we could get just buying online (Dell). With the add-on’s we saved over 20% on the laptop, plus they usually have free things, printers usually, so they got those as well.

Haven’t started looking at computer info for the twins yet. They register for classes this weekend so I’m hoping to stop buy the tech dept and get info.
