It’s difficult being the last one to leave. Ds1 had to watch everyone posting about all the fun they were having and making 89 new friends on FB, while he was still stuck here.

One of S2’s good friends left yesterday. His best friend leaves Saturday. All of his other friends are staying in town for school. So he said his goodbyes to everyone yesterday. The hardest, I think, was with his voice teacher. They are such great friends. But at least kids have facebook and twitter and such.

One of DS’s friends is going to Oregon State. He doesn’t leave until the end of September which is a month later than everyone else. DS said his friend doesn’t know what he’s going to do during all that time. I think he will end up visiting everyone at their colleges. Or at least that’s what I would do.

One of ds’s bffs is going to Oregon, and it’s the same thing. I told him to go stay with ds’s gf for a couple of days! She starts school in about a week.

I need some pharmaceutical advice. When I bought the cough syrup to make the medicine kit for my sons I had to show an I’D. Does this mean that my son who is 17 years old can not legally have cough syrup in his dorm room?

Great question. I’d just have his roommate hold it! lol

I might be wrong but I think they just restrict the buying of it because some teens use cough syrup to get high. But if you want to know for sure I’d ask the college your son is going to.

You need an ID to purchase dextromethorphan. You must be 18 to purchase, as a parent, it is fine. You can be intoxicated if you drink the bottle. I would suggest that all medications, even OTC be stored discreetly in the dorm room.

Well we officially moved dd into her dorm today. All went well. Had great weather. Roommate is very nice and there was enough space. Only had to take one trip to Target for a few extra hangers and food.

Okay, have to say this: last time I bought dextromethorphan the cashier asked me if I was 18. Granted, he didn’t look too bright or observant–but I’ll take it!! I almost kissed him, but then I remembered I had a cold. :)

DS leaves early Sunday a.m. He is doing laundry today while GF hangs out looking blue. They have decided to break up. We just got back from a long-planned Alaskan cruise (two years of saving) to celebrate DH’s milestone BD. I read up beforehand and the best tip I got was to buy a clear plastic shoe organizer and hang it over the bathroom door to organize toiletries. (Second best tip: bring small three-legged stools for extra seating on balcony.) Found one through Amazon for $7.99 (we have Prime so no shipping costs). All 4 of us in the cabin agreed it was a great add–made organizing everything so easy! DS received his dorm assignment and it turns out he and his 3 roommates have an en suite bathroom…so I asked him if he wants the clear shoe organizer. He said yes but not to bring it right away because it won’t be very cool. LOL! So I guess I’ll show up with it when I’m there in October, making it very clear that it’s a “mom” idea. Also visiting briefly over Labor Day–do you think that’s too early?

DDHM and LDog, my parents lived in St. Petersburg about ten years ago. Packed up the family and camped out there for two summers in a row. My parents had a family pass for the Hermitage and we did spend about a month of afternoons there. Some of my happiest memories are changing diapers in the Winter Palace. Truly amazing place.

HUGS to everyone launching and getting ready to launch. Don’t know what’s worse…

I got S all moved in Tuesday. He’s there a week early to participate in the summer bridge program run by TRIO so he hasn’t met his roommate yet. It was a long day. He got his laptop set up for use on the college network and got his paperwork straight for student employement also. He met some people to hang out with and I left campus feeling like he was in good hands. Surprisingly, I still haven’t cried yet.

Excellent, ree! I didn’t cry when I dropped ds1 off either. Sometimes it just feels right. :)

The Expanding Volcano WILL fit into the SUV…

We move son in this Tuesday. Packing will start tonight. Most everything will be loaded into plastic tubs for easy unloading and carrying to res hall room. Son will live in a 4 person suite. No one had an X-Box system so son bought one. Should be a nerd central room…math, design (son), engineering. and undecided majors.

Iowa State will have another record breaking frosh class with about 5500 frosh moving into res halls. Half on Tuesday, half Wednesday.

lol on class size: S2’s freshman class will have 76 students.

Hi, All,

Coming out of lurkerville to support all of my fellow Class of 13 parents who are getting ready to take their sons and daughters to school. My S13 is packing up to head off to Washington, DC, and we are getting back into the admissions cycle with S15…ugh!!

Feeling a little blue about our changing family dynamic, but excited for my son’s next stage of life!

Felicita, which school? We’ll be at Georgetown.

Haystack - I wish we could be joining you at Iowa State, but there was no talking D into a school up north. My S16 has already decided he will be going there though. DH and I loved it there, I’m sure your son will too!

A few pieces of advice about moving into a dorm. We prepared well and dd’s roommate didn’t and it took her a lot longer to move in. Put all clothes on hangers and throw a garbage over them - sooooo much easier!!! Also - use the plastic drawer things and pack them how they will keep them in the dorm room - my dd thanked me several times for keeping this organized - her roommate just had it all thrown into boxes and had to organize once she got there. It took us 4 hours even with all the organizing we did ahead of time!

ahsmuoh, sounds like great advice for those driving, but for those of us flying…
