Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Only seniors go to prom in our area, so we get to wait for one more year!

lauren, I see your point. I think each family has to make their own choices. :)

I do think there are things you can learn and have a feel for before applications. I just wanted to throw that out there. What I do know for my family is that we cannot afford NYU and they are notoriously stingy. So early on D has adjusted and found many other schools that will make her as happy. Not trying to keep her from failing just trying to keep her grounded in our reality.

Prom for my D is in June, after all the AP’s.

I pointed out to ds that prom is now just six weeks away. You snooze, you lose. I think he should ask her this coming week. We shall see.

Socialdrama: do you have a girl? Prom preparations for D1 were exhausting!! But for S2 and S3 it was just take a shower and put on a tux! Our prom isn’t until June either though.

S13 in New England botball tournament- their team won three major awards including the best programming - judges choice award!! Spent the entire day roaming around the tournament avenue looking at teenagers working diligently…A lot of people, lot of excitement…A day well spent

Don’t know if D will be going to prom yet, but it is on a Friday, and although the kids have a half day off, she has an AP test that afternoon, so not much time for preparations!

My older D had to go to prom on the day of an AP test. She went and had her nails done in the morning (by her theatre tech director!) and then went to the test with her hair still in rollers!

Don’t know if S2 will go to prom this year. It is a senior only prom so he’s waiting to see if any of his senior girl friends needs a date. Gay guys are always the utility date of choice.

Nellieh and Youdon’tsay - Glad you saw what I was trying to say. You lose 100 percent of the things you don’t even try, so I say - go ahead and try - within reason of course, and if that scholarship comes through - great! Like I said, I received two scholarships that I had no idea even existed when I was accepted to my undergrad and graduate schools. I’m so glad I didn’t get discouraged by their high cost before I sent in my applications!!

About Prom. If you all can believe this, Step-D’s school has a 10,11th and 12th grade prom! She went last year with some friends, and will likely do the same this year. (It’s not until mid-April.) She did mention that she’d like one boy to ask her, but he looks ‘just like’ Eminem so H and I are not that impressed - ha. I mean, I love Eminem, but I don’t know that I would like Step-D going to prom with his clone.

We did the whole ‘dress shopping thing’ in NYC last month and she found a dress she’s over the moon about, so there’s that…

I’d also like to add that I’ve been reading the HS Class of 2012 thread now and then these days and I am NOT looking forward to going through all of the stress, panic and (some) disappointment that those poor parents are dealing with right now.

However, I am looking forward to being able to find support amongst our CC group of the Class of 2013! Get ready, because if we are “in for” what they are going through, I’m going to need some virtual hugs!!!

Haven’t posted on this thread before, but I wanted to respond to laurendog! DS is a HS class of 2012 and unfortunately I hadn’t discovered CC until after he was accepted to a university. It is very helpful to have the community here as a resource, and to see that the problems you experience are not unique to your own family. DD is class of 2013 and we have combined the experience we gained from her older brother’s apps with all the info available on this site. She is a different student with different goals but I feel we have better resources now.
Sorry, to the point - I think that having CC as a resource and an outlet helps us a lot, even when stressing about acceptances in their senior year!

Prom here is in late May. So far kid haven’t even really started “asking” dates for prom. They kind of go all out for the prom invites and most kids get really creative. I would suspect we will start seeing pictures on Facebook soon of the creative ways kids have been asked to prom. At our school juniors and seniors can go to prom. Sophomores and freshmen can go if they are asked by a junior or senior.

Hey everyone, sorry to intrude here but I was wondering if you had opinions on wearing long dresses at junior prom. A few people are saying short for junior, long for senior. I tried asking in HS life but my thread was deleted because it turned into an argument about being homophobic -__- anyway thanks guys!

I have taken a peek at the Parents of the HS Class of 2012 thread as well. UCLA got 90000 applications?! Crazy… Our state flagship released regular decisions Friday. I read about an instate student from our neck of the woods that was waitlisted with a 4.5 GPA and 2330 SAT. I know the university reads wholistically, but it makes me nervous for my D next year. My D has a great transcript/GPA and class rank (she finds out March SAT scores this week!) and has taken a rigorous course load. However, results like this young student’s make you second guess your choices. My D is currently regretting she didn’t take a particular AP class next year. Without this class, she will still have taken 9 APs all across the curriculum, but she is concerned that it looks like she is avoiding a challenge in this one class. I just want to make sure she has a good safety school that she feels good about. It appears the young student that was waitlisted at our state flagship did not.:(

Jazzii–It depends on your school. Here everyone, for the most part, wears long dresses. We have one prom that juniors and senior attend.

Jazzi- at our school girls wear either. My d wore a long dress junior year and a short dress senior year.

At our school, the guideline is junior girls wear short and senior girls wear long, but lots of kids don’t follow the guideline.

blueshoe, I read the 2012 and get lots of anxiety. My daughter has great grades and SAT but not great ECs. However, I still have SAT-insecurity, did she do the right thing by not retaking it. We already paid for the SAT in March. There’s got to be more safeties added next year.

Jazzi, D1 wore short dresses for both junior and senior year.

For prom around here it is more common for junior girls to wear short dresses and seniors to wear long dresses, and the junior boys to wear suits and senior boys to wear tuxes.

Nonetheless, D has a long dress for junior prom. She’s hard to fit, and just had to have purple, so when she found a dress she liked and that fit, we had to go for it even though it was long. She is a bit worried about being overdressed. The sales lady at the dress shop insisted that it would be fine (yeah, not the most impartial input, she just wanted a sale…)

Don’t freak out about the 2012 thread. In fact, if you’re feeling anxious I’d say stay off of it! If you’ve been reading cc, you know that the UCs are letting in more kids from OOS to get the greater tuition dollars. It shouldn’t be a surprise that some really well-qualified CA kids don’t get in. I know a kid from OOS who just got into UCLA with stats that aren’t nearly as good as those listed by a previous poster. You just have to make a solid list of safeties, matches and reaches, and your student will land someplace great for him/her.

DS doesn’t have junior prom at her school, but they do have a spring dance that she hopes to go to! Not sure when it is - I’m hoping mid to late May or she probably won’t be able to go. She has so much happening after school during April (sports, musical, etc.) I think she’ll need a fun event like that!
The sheer number of applications at many universities/colleges this year is definitely worrying. I wonder how many waitlisted students will get in. Do you think that it’s a result of an increase in apps per student? It will be interesting to see what sort of pattern emerges. At least, I could look at it more objectively if I wasn’t worrying about DS’s chances next year!
S12 was very fortunate in getting into the universities that he did. He got into all 3 that he applied to EA, one safety and 2 matches. He would have tried for some reaches and another safety except that he was accepted by his #1 in December so he didn’t bother sending out the other apps.
