Parents of the HS Class of 2013

DD was looking at some flyers re summer programs that had been sent for her and was amused to find the costs of the programs well hidden at the back! Just as well she has her summer already mapped out!

Another one with a last-minute app in today. He’s worked for weeks on this app. He submitted it Sunday – a whole two days early! – but then we got an e-mail saying that they still need a transcript and SAT scores by tonight! What? They asked for him to self-report all those numbers, so why do that AND ask for an official transcript and SAT scores? Anyway, he got it all done thanks to an organized mother and nice registrar at his HS. But if he waited until tonight to submit he would have been up a creek and all that work was for naught. Argh. So not looking forward to the fall.

Youdon’tsay, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your son, too! What kind of program was it? How long before he know’s the outcome?

He’ll know in late April. Good luck to your ds, too.

YDS: My goal is to get the essays done this summer. Of course it didn’t work with the first 2!!

Ds2 doesn’t get how important the essays are. I didn’t look at his TASP essays until after he submitted them, and, well, they weren’t TASP-worthy. He was, however, really impressed at how, for another program that he (once again) was applying to at the last minute, I took a five-page essay he’d written for TASP and edited it down to the two-page essay he needed. I didn’t add a single thought – just tightened what he had and moved one sentence from the beginning to the end. We’ll see if it worked. He should hear about that one in early April. I don’t think I’ll be able to get him to do a lot of work over the summer, but the good news is that because of all these programs he’s got a couple of essays in the bad already. And assuming he does Questbridge the deadline means he’ll have to work on it all in late summer and early fall.

Hello PGHmom…

We had a fall presentation on Rotary Youth Exchange and it certainly looked interesting and would be a great thing.

D was interested but also thought she would love to just get going with college. She is also young (just turned 16).

Questbridge seems to be down. Does anyone have any info on a solution?

In years past, that’s been noted and people were allowed to submit late. But let this be a lesson: Don’t wait to the last minute. They don’t have to be that generous.

cichlidkeeper and YDS, what did those last two posts mean? Down in terms of money? Is it a first come first served scholarship? I don’t really know anything about Questbridge, but you two seem to be talking in code? :)

That was my first smilie, success!

Congrats, Bernese! :)

I assumed Chiclid meant the website is down. The deadline for QB’s Junior College Prep Scholarship is midnight. You can do a search on Questbridge to learn more about the program.

Thnx! It must be 10 Characters.

Ok…call me na

We’ve gotten a few, too, mainly local, nonselective schools.

When I was in high school, everyone called–but that was before computer and email :D. Our older two got a few calls but mostly emails. We will see what happens later this summer and into fall with the next two.

S2 just got accepted to the summer voice program at Oberlin. However, it is his third choice. He’s decided that Oberlin is just too rural and isolated. But it’s nice to get the acceptance and keep it in his pocket til he hears from the other schools.

Congrats, megp! Ds and I were talking last night about what he’d do if there was a conflict between some of the programs for which he’s applied. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

congrats megp. My son has not done anything for summer programs except watch the deadlines pass  Has your son already visited Oberlin? My city kid likes rural and isolated. For one, he doesn’t really care for crowds and also, he figures with less distractions off campus, the student community will be more tight knit.

RE: Phone Calls. SteveMA and I must be the same age  Because when I was in HS I got tons of calls (pre-email as he mentioned.) So far with regards to Step-D, I only know that one University has offered to have one of their Athletic Training majors call Step-D since when she and H go to visit that particular school, there are no ‘official’ tours being offered.

Congrats to your son megp!

Just got back from a local alumni breakfast for my University. Reminds me how glad I am that I went there. Step-D is going to apply there, but I want her to be more into the school than I think she actually is. Anyone else finding apathy about their alma maters from their kiddos?
