Parents of the HS Class of 2013

blueshoe–congrats. That is going to make next fall a WHOLE lot easier for her. We had our kids apply to one rolling admissions school as soon as possible in August just so they knew they had one place to go for sure. Takes a lot of stress off them.

I’ll have to ask the kids what they thought about the science part of the ACT. DD asked me yesterday, “so, if I get a 33 do I have to take it again”–no honey. She needs a super score of 30 for one top merit aid at one school, otherwise every other school she is considering a 28 is fine.

Lauren–I bet it is hard being away for things like Prom. It’s nice that you have a good relationship with her so she send photo’s, etc. Will you be able to attend graduation next year?

anniezz–sounds like your DD needs to get to know the cross country people at her school. Around here anyway, the cross country runners tend to be very good students and have great parties and while they usually have beer, none of them get overly drunk because of training. They were always the most fun parties on campus.

blueshoe, congrats on Clemson!

SteveMA, that’s encouraging that DD asked about a 33, isn’t it? She must feel good about the test.
DD’s social circle now is from her sports teams, but I don’t know that she’ll be playing in college. Fingers are crossed. But it is was a concern when my son was looking, and my nieces complain about this as well at their schools. Even the “wellness” dorms that are around don’t seem to encourage enough fun activities that don’t involve beer pong. (or much worse, the pre-outing binge drinking)

DD is still sick - she had tryouts this morning for an upcoming tournament with her club team, but she was just too sick to go so she went back to bed. It seems like our kids are so busy sometimes that they don’t have a chance to just rest up.

Great trip reports! FWIW…I know 3 students at Bucknell, and they are 3 very different profiles: 1 very hard-working nerd, 1 slacker nerd (smart, but mostly a gamer), and 1 social sorority girl (but not a glamour girl). All love the school.

anniezz: Two things. 1. For the most part, I think at most any school you can find all kinds of people, not everyone is a certain way. Even at a “party” school I think you can find people who like to have fun without drinking, and the opposite is true as well. 2. In addition to NCAA sports, lots of schools have club sports and intramural sports. So even though she is not on “the team”, she can still make friends through sports.

Anyone know anything about Walsh in North Canton, OH? Got some recruiting information from them. On paper it looks like a school D will be interested in.

They have an athletic training program too, Lauren!! Reasonable cost for the school too.

@ Laurendog

"she did well “except for the hard parts.” " LOVE that  Still laughing…

SteveMA- Walsh! What? Never heard of them! I need to get right on this and check them out! At this point I’m pretty much researching every AT program in the world ; ) Thanks for the tip! It’s funny you ask if I’ll get to be with Step-D for graduation. I’m actually down in FL right now! I missed the Prom yesterday because I couldn’t take too much time off of work. I’m here today through Tuesday because she has her “Junior Ring Ceremony.” H is flying in on Tuesday. It’s quite nice. Each Senior in the school picks a Junior to “give their ring” to. The Senior then gets up and says nice things about the Junior and bestows them with their class ring. (of course H and I paid for the ring - but the way they hand them out is nice.)

This is our first year living away from Step-D and so far either we’ve been down to FL or she’s been up to see us in VA every month. (Well, in Feb we met in NYC for prom dress shopping but that counts as seeing her! ha ha) Even though I do think of myself as a very involved step-parent, it’s still hard to miss the “big” things in life sometimes. I wouldn’t miss her graduation for the world.

Swans004 - Yes, she does have a way with words - doesn’t she  I just hope there were many more “normal parts” than there were “hard parts.” le sigh…

Blueshoes - Wow! That must be so awesome for your D. At least she knows that she’s “in” to a great school right off of the bat. Even though we are having Step-D complete all of her applications by Oct. 1st, I think this summer and early fall will be nothing but worry for us…

Another awesome last: just registered ds for two Subject Tests in June, his last ever SAT-related tests. So glad to be done junior year.

DS is taking the SAT in May, no subject tests yet though. He won’t take any subject tests unless he gets into his #1 choice and they give him enough aid that it’s finacially affordable for him to attend. The rest of the schools he is considering are more ACT schools to start. The #1 school uses the SAT II’s for placement only so he will take the Spanish one for sure, maybe an English or History something too.

Mornin’ all.

Step-D is taking 3 subject tests in May. Needs 2 of them for admission to one of her tops.

SteveMA - Did some research…unfortunately Walsh is not accredited by CAATE. We are only working off of their list of accredited schools since every AT in the business has warned us to send her to an accredited program.
Morning all! You have been busy this weekend  I’ve been off the grid working on taxes but I am happy to say that I got both mine & my mom’s done this weekend. Latest I’ve ever done them by about two months. I kept reminding myself that Feb 1 is the due date for next year!

YDS: your S will have company in June; I’m registering D for 2 SAT II subject tests as well (US History & Literature.)

They just got their paperwork for NHS last week so she’s been working on that. Right now things seem to be a little mellow on the homework front but AP exams will be here before we know it. 27 days of school left in junior year…

Vandy, I’m so surprised your D liked Case but not CMU! I have a friend who did her Masters in Social Work at Case – loved the education, but not the debt! That was quite a trip - you’ve seen about as many Ohio schools I have! One of these days I’m going to just drive around central Ohio touring all of these schools you guys are always talking about. My son is interested in EECS, so they are not options for him. Wooster, Kenyon, Denison, etc. – I am familiar with Oberlin though.

At Pitt, our tour guide told us that Penn had a law about so many women living together being considered a brothel, so no sorority houses. Then I read on CC that was an urban legend . . . too bad as that was the most interesting fact we learned on the tour!

Thanks for the info on the “Exploring” sessions. I’m still on the fence – I hate driving at night! Should we be expecting an invite to a third one that brings together the other schools – Princeton, Yale, MIT, etc? :)

Sacchi, I agree that the ACT English is more like SAT Writing m/c, and ACT Reading is most like SAT CR – doesn’t make much sense to me. I guess it does explain why some schools don’t require the SAT IIs if you submit the ACT – if they’re not using the science and reading sections, they can be considered the equivalent of SAT IIs I suppose.

Thanks for the reminder about signing up for the SAT IIs (Math II and Physics.) S13 has one super-reach dream school that requires them. With an 8% admit rate, and likely unaffordable, it hardly seems worth it. He doesn’t want to go through life wondering though.

Are your kids prepping for APs? This boy has done nothing! Last year he was on the ball, and he only had one test – this year he has three. I can see him losing steam as the year comes to a close. I hope he knows what he’s doing.

Well shoot lauren–I just looked it up and I think I am confusing Walsh with one of the other schools DD got information from over the weekend. Now I have to get my brain out of neutral and figure out which one that was…which ever program it was, it was certified because they mentioned something about the internships they had were certified or whatever.

^You’d be surprised…we went to one for Harvard, Princeton (I think - hard to remember!) and UVA. Apparently the 3 reps kept running into each other, got along well, and decided to join forces for their road shows.

Ok, found it, Kansas Wesleyan

MommyDearest13-kids just got done prepping/taking the ACT they haven’t started on the AP’s yet. State math testing Tue/Wed so prepping for that and then they will do prep in their AP classes for the tests a couple weeks before the AP tests.

I think we are going to be almost as relieved as the kids are when this year ends. In NOVA we had such a mild winter that the county just “gave back” two days because they build in a couple of snow days we didn’t use, so they now get out June 15. Of course, D13 is my studious child. S14 is not as dedicated, though he’s not terrible by any means, and its just a brief break before he is a junior in the fall. I’m going to be ready to relax before my small child becomes the focus. He is in 7th grade and I’m trying to avoid figuring his year so I don’t get on a forum with middle school parents who are really going to cause me anxiety! Happy Monday, everyone.

Hey. MommieDearest, DD is taking MathII and Physics, too. The ACT books have reappeared on the shelf in the family bookcase and the SAT book has moved to the floor of her bedroom. I will dig around for the SAT II books.

My son will be taking Math II and Physics and maybe Literature in June also. I think. I have a paid registration for a sitting he never took.

Good luck to everyone studying for AP exams and Sat IIs. We’ve debated if DD will take them, and after some prelim tests, I’m thinking not now. One school will take ACT and there’s 1 reach that wants them…
I’m so impressed with all the kids (and parents) who will have all tests behind them soon.
DD is so behind on tests from her brother. By this point, he was done with SAT, had 5 AP done and was about to take 2 AP and 3 SAT IIs. He was such a test taker and set it all up, while DD is the opposite. I’m kicking myself for not getting some tests in earlier, but with all DD’s health problems, I know I need to just relax and be happy that she is doing well.
