Parents of the HS Class of 2013

I agree, Woody, DD13 has hers started now both for coaches and the common app. As we get results from tests, sports accomplishments, etc. it just gets added. As you say, so much can be forgotten especially if you try to get it together in a hurry.

PghMomof2, I agree. My DD13 said the other day “Oh, I guess if I do well on the (national math) test I can brag about it on my resume”! I think that sometimes they make light of accomplishments or take them for granted.

Welcome to Swizzle!

Congratulations to MommyDearest’s S and Longhaul’s S on their NMF!!

So who has kids taking the SAT on May 5? D will be taking it for her second and probably last time. She did (by our standards, mind you) very well on the CR and well enough on the W, but not well on the Math. I’m hoping she’ll be able to get it up about 30-40 points or so. But what will be, will be.

She’s been moping around some today. I think she just feels a bit overwhelmed by having AP practice tests along with all the work that entails, SAT prep, other homework etc. Plus, she and a friend discussed their SAT scores and she came out feeling pretty badly about how she did in comparison to her friend. They tend to be very close grades-wise in school and enjoy a friendly competition with each other- but there was no competition at all in that arena. So her pride is squished. :-/

Hopefully tomorrow will be a happier day in D-land!

D is taking SAT on May 5 for the first time.

S is taking it on May 5th too.

The kids have their activity resumes going. The first college we visited way back when requires one so I had them start on those back then. I’m glad we did, it was hard enough to remember things from freshman year as sophomores, I couldn’t imagine trying to remember things from freshman year as seniors. D has a sport one done as well.

S was going to take the subject tests in May, but has a conflict so likely he will take the subject tests in June and the ACT in June and then re-take the SAT in October. We could change our minds and he could take the regular SAT in June instead of the subject tests.

Welcome, all.

Ds has had a resume since freshman year. We add things as they arise and then tailor it to the audience.

S is taking two subject tests on May 5. He has also been mopey and I think it is what Vandygrad said–he is just overwhelmed with AP, SAT, and general pressure. Finals and the regular SAT will be in the first week of June so no end is in sight, from his POV. On a better note, I dragged him (yelling at me) to a small, local college fair tonight and he ended up having good conversations and seemed interested! He abandoned me immediately and we had fun when we met again at the end, counting how many overlaps we had between his selections and mind. It was the cheeriest he has been in days. Maybe demystifying it all helped.

DD13 will be taking the SAT on May 5th, too. Not ideal as she has a performance the night before and a matinee later that day. I think that we will keep her home from school on the Friday before so that she can sleep in, relax, do a few questions, etc. She just has so little time. She will also be helping her team compete after school and before performances and is she is #2 girl on the team she would be missed. The seniors on the team would really like to go to provincials.

DD had an “IB meltdown” when the full amount of HW this week and through the 2nd week of June became clear. Worse is knowing that next fall will be twice as bad. She is taking just the Math II in May with little/no prep and the June SAT. If the June SAT is much better she can then tackle Math II again since it only is relevant for the more selective schools. If June SAT is a disappointment, retake one last time in October. What is stressing her out about the testing is the agony of some seniors who were disappointed in their college acceptances…they all have safeties but they are not first or second choices, like her, all good students, full IB but just good rather than stellar SATs.

Interesting that some kids are so stressed and ds seems so relaxed. In lots of classes they are in review mode so not lots of homework. He did the Latin CB questions online, and we went tux shopping. Dang, tuxes are expensive!!!

Sending good thoughts for those who are struggling.

Prom dresses are expensive too! I know I lent out a formal dress a few times while in college to friends who needed it, so I am hopeful she may wear it more than once. It’s too bad she can’t fit in her older sister’s dresses.

D’s HW has been manageable lately too, which is good with the spring sport season in full swing. Mostly studying for tests and some essays, but not overwhelming. We still have a month of school after the AP tests are over, so there will be some projects then I think. I sympathize with those who are overworked at this time, it is stressful.

We were thinking of notifying the two reaches about son making the top 50k on the NMSQT. There is no point of notifying the safety schools if one is confident kid will make NMF, since the safety will be an auto acceptance, right?

I don’t think it matters much at this point which colleges you notify. D is going to list the one university on her list that gives significant merit aid to NMF’s, then one of the many reaches on her list that give small NMF amounts. There will be many NMF’s applying to the reaches, so it may not make any difference in admission there.

D is also having some breakdowns with her schedule. Preparing for AP and IB exams, SAT, and ACT. in addition her EC’s have not let up. As the senior in school are now coasting she is being asked to step up on some boards and that is adding to the stress.

I do think the biggest concern for her however is the realization that she is now spending the next year charting a new course for herself. She used to be excited talking about it, but now that it is real I think it is overwhelming her.

DD is planning to take SAT and ACT in June. May just didn’t work - April/May are sports overlap months so she is juggling too much right now.

I don’t know how it’s going to work for DD, taking both SAT and ACT in June, but we’ll see. If she can come out with a decent ACT score, or bring up her SAT CR score 30 points (where I’d expected based on her PSAT scores) then she’ll be in better shape for the schools she is looking at. I know that her CR score would be higher if she hadn’t been sick last year - reading and vocabulary are the 2 things that suffered the most. She really wants to raise her M/CR score 90 points to reach a certain number, but I think that’s not realistic given her time, and knowing her study habits.

Anyone know when the scores from the April ACT test will be out?

Steve, April 30. I don’t know how you access them online though. I thought I read somewhere that there is a fee for that? That seems wrong…

blueshoe-I just looked at the ACT site and it says that looking at scores online is free. It says that the scores could be out between April 30th-June 8th. I just don’t remember how close to the start of that block of time the scores usually come out I guess.

I think that for the AP’s if you want to get your scores early (calling??) you have to pay a fee. Maybe that is what you are thinking?

Thank you, Steve. I thought I read that somewhere on the ACT site, but I must have misinterpreted. Thought that was wacky.:)
