Congrats, dadotwoboys Clark Scholars is most impressive. Did you see on their home page where the 2011 Clarkies are going to college? Your son clearly has a bright future ahead of him!

Reeinaz, I dont know a thing about track times, but I do know that seeing your kid beaming is PRICELESS! :)

Youdontsay, congrats to your son all expenses paid visits sound good to me!

I dont have a pitchfork, but apparently I have a pretty effective death stare. SteveMA, Im definitely feeling for your poor guy thats a tough one!

Yes, ditto on the congrats to S of Dadotwoboys. That Clark Scholars website is impressive. Good luck to him.

Anybody going to the Irish college fair? There was an article in the paper about how great going to Ireland for undergrad was for US students. They profiled a woman in law school here who had done undergrad at one of those schools. D agreed to go to the fair.

I cannot believe she agreed to go to the fair. Maybe she does have college fever. Would we agree to this crazy scheme? Who knows, but it should be an interesting afternoon.

Congrats to yours YDS. That was an application that my son never bothered to complete. I’ve finally learned that he’ll finish what he’s interested in and will be oblivious to the rest. I’m sure my voice sounds like the teacher from Charlie Brown when I talk about that “other” stuff.

He’s visiting Ursinus next week and is sitting in on one of the classes. He actually went to the library and checked out the book they will be discussing that day. He’s looking forward to this visit so I’m happy about that. We’re scheduled to tour Philadelphia University tomorrow and the forecast is calling for thunder storms The school has some interesting majors like textile engineering but also has a major pre-med program. My son is looking at the interactive design program. I’m really interested in seeing the campus because looking at the website, you’d never guess it was smack dab in the middle of Philly.

Wow, lots of good news around here! congratulations!

reeinaz, my SIL was encouraging my DD to apply to Phil U. Her niece just finished a physician assistant program there and loved it, and has multiple offers. Good luck with the weather tomorrow!
(DD has a tournament on Lehigh on Sunday so I’m nervous about the weather as well!)

I agree with those who say prom planning for boys is easier - it took us 15 mnutes with DS - he picked it out - shoes, shirt, tie, tux… the only other we had to do was go to the florist for flowers. Luckily his school hired a bus to take the kids to prom, so parents all dropped off kids at the school and took pictures there. Everyone was picked up back at the school. No limos, no worries about drinking and driving and late after-parties. (It was a small magnet school with lots of strict parents, so no one seemed to expect any more than that!)

It looks like DD isn’t going to prom - it’s 5 weeks away, but it doesn’t seem to be in the works.
SteveMA, Im sorry that it didn’t work out for your son… I hate that stuff!

Congratulations to Dadof2- that program sounds amazing! What an opportunity!
Additional HUZZAHs to ReeinAz’s son for a great running time and to YDS’s son for the free visits. All great news!

SteveMA- I’m sorry about your son’s No answer to prom. My D experienced the same thing- asked a very good friend of hers to go but unfortunately he couldn’t (legitimately) because he had a prior out of town engagement that weekend. Even so, seeing how long it took to screw up her courage to ask him, only to have him have to decline, I felt so badly for her. There is a boy from her school that rumor has it is going to ask her but hasn’t yet- Ugh! This can be a hard time for our teens! Luckily D seems to, at least outwardly, be handling THIS part well- I think she is too busy trying not to melt down in AP practice tests and SAT math prep.

So the idea of buying a used tux online never occurred to me but that is an excellent idea! Will definitely be keeping that in mind for my sons when they get to this age. Thanks for the tip!

For those interested in the statistics and data behind 4 and 6 year graduation rates, the 3 state universities of Iowa publish an annual report on graduation rates and retention.

the average one-year retention rate for the entering class of 2009 with an ACT score of 32-36 was 92.8% while the average one-year retention rate for students with an ACT score of 27-31 was 89.4% and for those with an ACT score of 19-21, it was 82.1%.

Six-Year Graduation Rates:
The six-year graduation rate at UI was 69.6%; at ISU, it was 70.2%

Six-Year Graduation Rates by First-Term GPA.

Average Time to Degree.
The average number of years to complete an undergraduate degree by students in the entering classes of 2004 at the Regent universities who graduated within six years was 4.49 years.

Using data from the National Student Clearinghouse, the Regent universities were able to “track” students from the entering class of 2004 who transferred to another post-secondary institution prior to completing their undergraduate studies at their original Regent institution.
When those numbers are factored into the total graduation rates, the six-year
graduation rates increase from 69.6% to 77.9% at the University of Iowa; from 70.2%
to 79.1% at Iowa State University.

@vandygrad87…I think that is an awesome phrase…so true as well…
I needed a good laugh today…so Thank You…and I 2nd the motion for the phrase to be adopted…

BerneseMtn, I have a niece who is a junior at Trinity in Dublin. She seems to like it well enough. I don’t think they have dorms though - she has lived in an apartment every year. Has several room mates this year of different sexes (no one is dating each other). Our family is Irish-American though, and we have close relatives in Ireland and England.

That’s some interesting information Haystack, especially grad rates by GPA. It makes sense though. For many of the schools I’ve looked at, even though you only need a 2.0 to be in good academic standing, many majors require a 3.0 in the major courses. So a C student might end up doing a lot of repeats.

I love the catch-phrase, especially with all the crazy “odds” out there!

reeinaz, I got the Carleton won today too! I wish DD would do one of these - I think the writing program could be great for her - English is not her strong-suit these days and she could use some encouragement.
But with all the sports, she hasn’t been that interested and didn’t pursue any of the applications I sent her way. (The only one she was excited about was the “mini-med school” one at UR, where they get to work with cadavers! But we found out about it too late and it was full.)

Mailed off DS’s “summer program” today. It’s a 4 day program at one school he is considering that comes with a $13,000 scholarship if he attends that school so he didn’t have a choice but go :D.

I just checked DS’s “college” email–one he set up for all of the college stuff and gave me the password to–which I truly appreciate since DD gave everyone MY email address thinking I would want to see it, thanks honey, and he got the Carleton invite too. There is no way I could get him to even THINK about attending–although the writing would be good for him too. He wouldn’t be able to miss that much band over the summer…that and he would look at me like I have 2 heads for even suggesting he go :D.

Great day for us today! D13 visited her safety and fell in love with it - it rocketed to the top of her list! And she has a good shot at merit $$. I am so relieved…

SteveMA so sorry about the prom for your DS. I hate having to watch kids go through that.

YDS congrats on Questbridge. Wonderful

MomofBoston. Great news on the safety.

My D is going to the prom- she finally asked her boyfriend as it is her prom not his. We picked up a great black dress in NYC so cheap. They have arranged a group of 3 couples. They are now figuring out transportation there and what to do after. The kids are all concerned about cost (don’t you love it) and they don’t drink so they are skipping the post prom drinking parties.

anniez - we are visiting UR on tuesday.

No summer programs here other than employment, IB coursework and extended essay. D has orientation tomorrow. :)
