Wow, Apollo- that’s awful! Poor guy. Hope the principal can help you. Bullying is such a horrible experience. Your story makes me sad. Kids really can be awful. Update tomorrow?

89wahoo, I’m so sorry to hear about your son! When can he see the oral surgeon? These accidents always seem to happen so fast and leave one in a state of shock afterwards. Please let us know how he is doing.
Apollo6, bullying is very worrying, I hope that the principal can help the situation. I agree with Fineartsmajormom that martial arts can really boost the confidence.

89wahoo so sorry about your son. D is a soccer player. Injuries can be horrible.

Apollo sorry about the bullying issues your S is experiencing. Middle school is just the worst. My S had some issues and it is heartbreaking.

89Wahoo- Wowsa! That sounds truly traumatic! I hope your S is feeling better soon. One nice thing about living where we both live is that there is NO shortage of qualified professionals ( albeit most of those professionals are lawyers, but I digress…
)

Attempting to finalize things for our summer college trip this week. Nervous about the ACT results next week.

Happy Monday All. MTOBEIYF! lol

89wahoo, I’m so sorry! I hope that the oral surgeon can fix him up and get him feeling better soon!

fineartsmajormom, that sounds like such a neat weekend! That’s great that you had DD stay over. My DS is far from home and it hasn’t been feasible for DD to visit him, but if I can pull it off, maybe next year. My 2 have grown apart already - starting with high school (they went to different schools) and it’s so important for them to keep that bond.

I hope everyone has a great week!

89whaoo–OUCH!!! Some advice, with jaw injuries you will probably have to stay on top of your insurance company, both medical and dental, they will both claim the other should pay for it since it is on that fine line of medical/dental, but since it was from an injury, your medical insurance should cover treatment. I spent the better part of last year going back and forth with our medical insurance company getting some oral surgery and other care for D taken care of. Just a heads up.

89wahoo - Youch!! It makes me cringe thinking about it. I would need sedatives to make through the week (and I mean as the parent). More power to him and you. Hope the docs can make it all better in the end. Hang in there and keep u posted.

Apollo - somebody mentioned it before me - middle school is the worst. The bullies are meaner and the rest fall in line with the whole pack mentality. As you know, it does get better, but it may not feel that way to your child right now. Hopefully the martial arts will build self-esteem and confidence. That’s what helps, I think.

89wahoo - owwwww! Hope he’s feeling better soon. DS will be looking at some sort of surgery when he returns from his gap year, as braces have not corrected a severe crossbite. We are NOT looking forward to it.

Apollo - agree, middle school can be very tough. DS still deals with anger about the way the school admin. ignored some of his experiences - he’s much angrier at them than the actual bullies.

DS made his final visit last week (U Rochester) and changed his choice - he’ll be a Sooner in 2013. Any of you who think your D or S may be an NMF - do check it out. We were VERY pleasantly surprised when we visited. The financial package is close to U Alabama (and includes a potential 5th year tuition break) and they are working hard to spoil their honors college kids.

PghMomof2 - I read about your visit to U Rochester and am sorry the overnight went so badly. I hope you are complaining to the school.

Can you compare U of Oklahoma and Alabama? Or discuss what made Oklahoma stand out for your son. Didn’t know about the potential 5th year tuition break, that is interesting.

89wahoo - ouch, I hope the surgeon can do his/her magic and he is not in much pain.

Apollo - I keep thinking bullying has got to get better and it just hasn’t, hugs to you and your son.

I keep hearing about Truman. Does anyone have a link to their Common Data Set? I can’t seem to find it.

Apollo- That is upsetting about your S18! I have an S18 also so we’ll be seeing each other there too, one day. I hope the school was responsive to your concerns.

vandy-I don’t have a link but what do you want to know? Average ACT 25-30, average SAT Crit Reading 550-620, math 560-640. State school in Missouri. 5780 UG students, 75% acceptance rate. This is from the Collegeboards site. The surrounding town is a typical rural Missouri town, nothing too exciting, but the campus is beautiful.

So sorry to hear about Apollo’s and Wahoo’s kids. Our thoughts are with you.

Regarding stats, I particularly like this site to get stats, too.

[College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics](College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics)

One thing I look at is the number of degrees awarded by major. It is under programs/majors. It also is easy to find the Male/Female ratio here.

Sorry to hear about the accident 89wahoo…Hope he gets better soon. My prayers with you.
Apollo: Feel sorry for your son’s experience. Hope he will come out of it stronger and the bullies get what they deserve.

Congratulations to all out tehre for teh wonderful summer school accpetance

A quick question: with AP Exams around the corner- which prep book for APUSH? I know last year around this time, there were lots of talk about APUSH. Tried going back to figure out- but couldn’t.

Thanks BerneseMtn for the link. Very useful

New here. I have a son graduating next year. We have visited a few schools and I am beginning to panic. Unfortunately there is no way I can go back through this entire thread but will continue to follow it from here.

Ok parents, wwyd? The plan was for DD to take SAT (2d time) and ACT (1st) in June. I’m not crazy about back/to back tests, but with crazy schedules… Now it turns out that DD may have a national/qualifier tournament on SAT day. She wants to play d3, but is/playing catchup after missing a year due to illness.
Sport or SAT? (ACT is week after.)

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC

Anniezz–she can still take the SAT in the fall but she can’t do the qualifier then…

89wahoo, yikes!!! My jaw ached in sympathy pain. I can’t even imagine.

Apollo, so sorry to hear about the bullying. Surprisingly, my son hasn’t endured much. Speaking of which, his school has arranged to take all of the students to see the movie Bully. Have any of you seen it?

Welcome CBGMass!!

Been away from the board for a few weeks as this is the busiest time of year for our business. So like CBG, I will be playing catch up by trying to follow more from here on out ;)

S13 took the ACT last weekend and felt really good about it. Not sure if that is a good sign or not. His GC told him he needs at least a 32 to keep in line with his College “wish list”. He has AP’s and SAT Subject tests around the corner like most of the others on this thread.

Sad to say no college visits yet
He has a Track camp at Stanford in July, but that is about it.

Is anyone else as behind as we are when it comes to visits?
