Monofboston… Thanks …I know about Calc…
I just wish mine had taken reg Calc…
they teach the socratic method at her school and while I feel this is fine for English and History…Math is so concrete it needs formulas taught…her class (most of them are international who have already taken the class overseas) is already familiar with so much that she is intimidated and tries her best…she gets tutored 3x’s a week by other teachers…but I think she is just too far behind at this point to get a good AP score…Thank goodness you don’t Have to report the scores to the Colleges…if she gets a 3 I’ll be thrilled…
next year AP Stats…and that she be great at…Like I said she was a great Math student before this fiasco…she’s a sociology kid so hopefully this won’t hurt her…

If anyone is going to be near Philly next Saturday, Swarthmore college is having a junior visit day. [Junior Visit Day :: Admissions & Aid :: Swarthmore College](http://www.swarthmore.edu/jvd.xml) It seems there will be lots of info given, worhsops and stuff, that isn’t specific to Swarthmore.
Registration is closed but you can join the waitlist. I was told that last year, everyone on the waitlist was eventually invited.

Interesting comments on math - S started with Algebra 1 in 7th grade and did just fine with that and geometry. But struggled with Algebra II honors (bad teacher) so moved back to regular math for precalc. This year he had to do calc which is only offered as honors or AP so he’s doing honors and seems to have a bad teacher again based on his grades - which are not far below the class average. Next year will take AP Stat which should be fine if taught by the same teacher that D1 and D2 had.
Tomorrow is SAT day - he claims to have been studying for it - we will wait and see if his results reflect that effort.
Next weekend we go to D2’s graduation so he will miss his APUSH test - fortunately the school does not require him to take it.
Still another 5 weeks to go until the start of summer break.

PAMom-my D had same schedule as yours but H Alg 2 was fine, pre calculus horrific. However, getting got one of the highest grades in the classwe thought AP calc would be okay until the awesome calculus teacher gave her the bad news. Thank goodness he did! She would have been buried! AP Stats is very applicable to D’s interests and many real life experiences so it has been fun for her.

Good Luck everyone on the SAT tomorrow!!! I am sure this group will have great results! Go 2013!!!

Sad news. Adam Yauch aka MCA from the Beastie Boys passed away today from cancer. He was only 47.

D has SAT tomorrow also. She didn’t do as well as she hoped in October so is in a prep class we heard very good things about from others. She’s missed several classes re entry because of her sports’ schedule. Teacher really was discouraging about the effect that will have on her score when the class met earlier this week. Choices, right, and I get that, but for the abolute gobs of money we have paid, I’m not too happy that my kid got negative attitude about the test three days before it happens So I got the mail today and there is an application from this group for S14- unsolicited! D had better really shine on the test for that one to happen. Sorry- just had to vent a little.

*recently, not re entry.

DS is talking the SAT tomorrow too. He didn’t do any prep classes and just took the ACT in April so who knows what will happen??

My S is taking the SAT tomorrow also. He took a 3 day prep class in February that I think was more tips/strategy than content. He claims he knows how to approach the essay. He didin’t write enough the first time he took the SAT and on the ACT just blew it by having to basically scrap everything he’d already written. We’ll see. Good luck to all the testers. What’s our catch phrase? May the odds be ever in your favor?

STEMfamily- My D did the same last summer. She did a program in DC. I barely got a text reply to “are you alive??”. D’s reply- “yes”.

Re:Alabama- I wanted to be sure folks did not think I was bashing. I have since learned what a great program it is. Honestly I am impressed with how aggressively they recruit top students.

Congrats on the Class Officer.

CBG- I don’t see a lot of harm in taking SL Math. There is something to be said for review.

So excited to hear braces are coming off blueshoe. I loved seeing D with hers off.

Reein- agree- so sad about the Beasties. I remember more than one college party with them playing in the background.

Good luck to all the SAT test takers tomorrow. I cannot wait for May to end.

I’m sure you all know this but for anyone wanting to take the June ACT today is the last day to sign up without paying the late fee.

Good luck to all the SAT takers tomorrow.

ree - This has been such a sad week. I think it’s good that it’s coming to an end. Someone that I had the pleasure of getting to know a few years back, took his own life the day before yesterday. He was a football player and they are saying that he was not adjusting well to ‘normal life’ after his NFL playing days had ended. It is so sad to think about the good times I shared with him and how down and desperate he must have felt in his last days.

Now with news that MCA has passed from cancer, someone I definitely “grew up with” throughout my high school years, my heart is just full of sadness.

I am hoping next week brings better news and more hope. It’s raining here now, and everything just ‘feels’ gloomy.

Best of luck to all whom are taking the SAT or the SAT IIs tomorrow! MTOBEIYF! lol

Blueshoe, Congratulations on the side-by-side performance! That’s really special.

Re. SL v. HL IB math, My D13 is taking SL after pre-cal and AP stats last year. She doesn’t enjoy math and doesn’t feel she is good at it. I think she scored a 28 or 29 on ACT. She’s finding it easy to get a 7 in SL and it has been a real confidence booster for her. Since you can’t take everything HL, you might as well choose standard levels for those courses where you feel the least confident.

Good luck, test-takers! Ds is relieved to not be testing tomorrow. All his friends seem to be doing the SAT or STs. He’s preoccupied with prom. Washed the car tonight, picks up the corsage in the morning. :)

Just wanted to add my best wishes for all taking SAT tomorrow! These tests are just one of the things that makes the junior year so intense.

laurendog: Agree with you about this week. I had a coworker have a heart attack during a team meeting and the EMT’s couldn’t revive him. I wasn’t in the meeting but it has really shaken all of us. Sure puts things in perspective.

Good luck to the Lucky '13 test takers out there.

STEMFamily and laurendog - I am very sorry for your loss. It does put things in perspective.

Good luck to all test takers tomorrow. My daughter didn’t know or forgot she has to one SAT subject test. This week she had so many tests at school, it was unbelievable.

D2 was asked to prom by a friend. Yeh!

On the sad news front, I’ve talking to D1 and she said one of her high school friends(not too close) committed suicide last week. She was at one tippy top college. All this just before she was about to graduate. Senseless. Too sad.

Off to a Cinco de Mayo party but wanted to drop in and wish some last-minute luck to those of you whose kids are testing. I’m hoping they give glowing reports!

@DrGoogle- So happy for D2 re: prom! My D is coming off a hell week too. She just got back from taking the SAT and all I want for her to do for the next few hours is put her feet up and take some deep breaths.

Re: the suicide- That is just tragic. I have read several threads on CC lately about kids having psychotic breaks or just general breakdowns and it scares me to death. Our college search is, for financial reasons, more merit-based than super-reach based and honestly, I’m kind of glad for it. I know that D just about loses her mind when things get really intense and overwhelming schoolwork wise and she needs help through it. If she had to deal with that pressure on a more unrelenting basis, I just don’t know how she would cope. It really is terribly sad.

I just don’t remember feeling the inordinate pressure that she and some of her peers seem to feel. Is it worse for them than it was for us?

Thanks for the good luck, YDS. We’ll see how it went. Hopefully we see an improvement in math and hopefully most of her schools will look at the best of scores. Best of luck to all!

MTOBEIYF!

Fingers crossed for all of today’s test takers that the odds are in their favor!

No tests for DD today, but next month will be very test-intensive. I’m sorry for all the sad news this week. It was a rough week in our house this week - some really bad behavior by a coach led to lots of tears and some huge sacrifices from DD. I’m trying to put it behind me and shake off the anger that I’m feeling over it all, but I’m not there yet. DD is handling it all better than I am!

I posted on another thread, but realized I should ask here -Does anyone here have any info about U Mary Washington? DD has been looking at it and talked with an adcom at a recent college fair. They’re pretty affordable for us, so they could be a good financial safety, but I’m not sure how strong their academic programs are - especially sciences.
