Hi! checking in! I too was away for the weekend at D1’s college graduation. She had a fantastic 4 years, despite it not being her first choice. So it definitely gives a different light to the process. We had a great weekend away with just DH, D1 and I. We went to a baseball game, hung out by the pool, went to graduation, went to lunch with all of the grandparents, and moved some of her stuff out of her apartment. S3 stayed home for his play and we had my brother babysit. Aside from the house being TP’d, everything survived the weekend.

I can’t keep up with everything. But my thoughts are with everyone dealing with Asthma, Proma, food poisoning and post-prom hangovers.

Meal plans: When D1 was in the dorm her meal plan was a combo plan. There was an all you can eat dining hall for a set price, and then there were also dining dollars that worked at a variety of places on campus, so if you wanted to just get a latte for breakfast and spend more on lunch you could. S2 is on the “swipes” plan. But there are lots of options, all you can eat dining halls, and different restaurant type places. You can even use your “swipes” to swipe someone in.

Oh wow Mommaof5, 1st ever asthma attack. How scary, especially with the hospitalization.

YDS, Congrats to your son for the presidency and award. I’m glad your S is taking the college stuff to heart. My son heard the essay should be memorable and has decided he would write his in limerick form. I pray he was just trying to get a reaction out of me…lol.
EEP…Just read about the food poisoning :(

laurendog, too funny about Star Wars weekend and the unrecognizable actors that headlined. I’m sure true fans could tell the difference

I spent the weekend trying to find extra long linens for my son’s trip this weekend. Well, I really only went to Walmart and Target but that was enough for me I guess they’re only in stock during the dorm shopping season which hasn’t started yet. I know I had a set from last year but can’t find them. I’m guessing he left them on the bed at Kenyon last summer. Oh well, he’ll only be there 3 nights. He can make regular sheets work.

I am sorry to hear about the asthma attack and food poisoning - ugh!

Meal Plans - D11 started off with the standard 15 swipe plan that all freshman get at her school but then she moved to the 10 meal plan with extra dining dollars second semester that she could use at other places around the campus - this is one of the benefit with attending an urban campus - more varied dining options…food for thought.

Huge Congrats to Mommaof5!!! And many hugs at the same time :)

YDS: That is AWESOME!!!

Ldog: LOL…almost sorry to have missed out on that spectacle at Disney. I will be at D-land on Thurs for D14’s Sweet Sixteen and just hoping to see Mickey and Minnie ;)

My son just had me buy 2 sets of Yugioh cards online. It seems one of his girl classmates randomly came up to him the other day with a couple of Yugioh cards and was asking him all sorts of questions about the game. It seems she’s never played the game before. Why she had the cards and why she picked my son to ask about them remains to be seen But he had me get a “real” deck for her and one for him so he can show her how to play.

laurendog-I am assuming the II’s come out the same time as the SAT but I don’t know for sure. They don’t have anything on the SAT website that shows they come out on different days. We hit Star Wars days when we were at Disney several years ago. Our boys were/are big Star Wars fans so they were in heaven. The guest star that day was Warwick Davis, played an EWOK I think. I remember him in the movie Willow. We saw him in the park with his family the day before the Star Wars parade too.

More congrats to all your terrific kids! Plays, elections, proms, dates, graduations!

Mommaof5- Yikes! Hope S16 has recovered spectacularly! Congrats to big brother!

mamabear-We are flying to DC in June for college visits and interviews! Glad your child enjoyed her time there!

annie-no fine line in our house for your quote except when we add “threatening” (:

AP tests all over and now in the vortex of all the 3 AP projects (no movies here), and studying for finals. D signed up for two SAT subjects but only wants to take one. Can she do that? She doesn’t have time to study for the test that she needs to with so many projects.

I have a dragging girl. I picked her up for a dentist appointment today and she looked very tired. Gave her some chocolate covered expresso beans as a pick me up. Wish she had time to go jump on the trampoline or go for a swim…notice I don’t say get on Facebook, tubmlr or twitter?(:

When asking for LOR we were told they do the letters online, how does that work before filling out the common app or told them where the child is applying?

YDS- Congrats on prez and sorry for food poisoning…my absolutely biggest fear! I am such a wimp with that!

True story. When I was in kindergarten, during introductions, I said “My name is reeinaz but you can call me Pita. Everyone does”. I was in middle school before I learned what my mom really meant…lol.

Regarding subject tests, yes you can not take a test that you are signed up for, with no consequences, except you lose the money for the untaken test registration.

My S was signed up for 3 subject tests and decided in the end to only take 2. He just took the 2 tests and then left, and only the 2 scores of the tests he actually took were reported.

reeinaz–check online for the XL’s. I think with Walmart’s ship to store they come pretty fast but double check on that. We had good luck with Overstocks for XL’s too. I hope your mom said that to you in jest too–if not, that’s not very nice.

Reeinaz… Kudos to the girl for a creative approach to getting a guy’s attention. So your “knight in shining armor” takes on the modern equivalent to slaying a dragon by explaining yugioh? as “helpless princess” bats her eyes and says “cool”…the modern equivalent of “thank you for saving me” making the “knight” feel smart/strong/protective toward the girl who could slay said dragon or learn yugioh twice as fast as most of the boys but chooses the age-old ploy of playing to man’s innate chivalry…brilliant! Glad to know that some things stay the same…

Went to Exploring College Options, college road show for H, Georgetown, Duke, Penn, Stanford tonight. It was packed.

One interesting thing the Penn guy said, admission to elite college is not a reward for racking up the EC’s and awards prior to college, rather it is granted based on their perception of, and your convincing them of your potential to accomplish and contribute things to their school. Of course, your history is a key indicator of that potential, but not the only indicator. Obvious, isn’t it? but I did not see it that way.

Other things: Duke is moving to a house system, just said quickly, without explanation. Interviews are not guaranteed, except for Georgetown. For the other four schools, if you get an interview, it is not an indication that you have a better chance for admission. So since they can’t guarantee the interview, you will not be penalized for not having one. However, if invited, GO!

Buzzwords:
in: entrepreneurship
Out: green, only one mention

reeinaz - too funny about PITA. That story made me Congrats to your boy for figuring out a cool way to ‘get the girl.’ hee. Congrats to you for being a willing accomplice

SteveMA - Thanks for the thoughts about the Subject tests. I guess I too am waiting for Thursday! OMG! about Warwick Davis! He did indeed play an Ewok! Now, usually I would have no clue about these things, but, Warwick is the star of a new HBO series created by Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant called “Life’s Too Short.” It is hysterical. I absolutely love it. Definitely recommend! One of the highlights of the season - Warwick is getting a divorce and wants to get an award back from his (soon to be ) ex-wife. Physical comedy at it’s best! [Lifes Too Short - Warwick Davis Climbs For Award - YouTube](<a href=“Lifes Too Short - Warwick Davis Climbs For Award - YouTube”>Lifes Too Short - Warwick Davis Climbs For Award - YouTube) There’s another episode (the first one) with Liam Neeson as a guest star. Highly recommend as well.

It’s raining and raining in NOVA and it just won’t quit. sigh. Hope things are sunny and bright where you are!

SteveMA - I saw tons of sheets online at walmart which is why I thought the would be available in the stores. Unfortunately he leaves Thursday so even site to store would be too slow. He’ll just have to make do. And yes, my mom (and EVERYONE else) called me that in jest but it made it no less true As a child I talked nonstop, had no filter, and asked a million questions like if oranges were blue would they still be called oranges. Mom eventually got me my own set of encyclopedias, so that at least cut down on the endless questions. My brother called me Mighty Mouth.

fineartsmajormom - Even more fitting is that he picked out a dragon deck for her. In his defense, son is really clueless about these things (picture Sheldon Cooper) and it seems that she’s been trying to engage him in conversation for weeks now. Alas, it was Yugioh that got his attention. Imagine his heartbreak when he discovers it was just a ruse. The funny thing is he hasn’t played the game since middle school. But I am proud to say that he does laundry and cooks :)

Great news perazziman!

laurendog - it’s raining here in Phiily too. I’m wishing I’d made arrangements to go to Vermont with my son over the weekend. He’ll be in Burlington and the weather is supposed to be great. Sunny and low 80s.

Wherenext: The common app. has a provision where students need to add the teacher who woudl be doing LOR for them. Then Teacher have their own password etc, They can upload the LOR at a convenient date. The deadline for individual students will be known to teachers when they log in. Students will be able to see once all the components of tehir applications are done and then submit the application. Hope this is what you were wondering. So when the teachers know they have to write LOR, they will write their LOR at their convenience and then upload later.
