^Yds, I hope he feels better soon.

YDS: Hope he is on the mend soon. Gallbladder attacks are NO FUN. Neither are kidney stones. When I had a kidney infection and stone last year and went to the hospital. They asked me about my pain. I said that I had twins the old-fashioned way and I’d rather do that again! The doctor then gave me some love in my IV :)

I love a conversation punctuated with a healthy dose of potty mouth!

Congrats Peraazziman.

Anniez- so glad you won your case for the extended time.

Momma- so glad your son is better.

MDMom- your son sounds like he has the right attitude and it sounds like your son is easily motivated to prove this coach wrong. Seems like you could use it to your advantage. Maybe he could suggest to your son there is no way he could power wash your whole house over the weekend?

YDS- ouch on the gallbladder.

89Wahoo- seems ridiculous that the charges would be denied. Makes no sense to me. I would kick it up.

Megpmom- we have had issues with scripts over the years. H is on many meds and it seems like every year or so we are fighting this battle.

Donrivan- we have had items stolen at school. Money, ipods, phones. We have always reported it but never saw anything back … The school should know they have an issue though.

YDS- Congrats to your son on student govt president.

Letters of Rec. D won’t ask now. She has been told by GC to hold off until next year. She has her three lined up. The “other” GC will write her LOC due to her involvement in ECs. D had two of her other favorite teachers who promised her killer LORs.

Reeinaz- our school also does not discuss grades. There is no ranking and no Val/Sal. I actually like it that way.

Reeinaz: OMG- Too Funny!
"True story. When I was in kindergarten, during introductions, I said “My name is reeinaz but you can call me Pita. Everyone does”. I was in middle school before I learned what my mom really meant…lol. "

My D once told her teacher that our dog’s breed was a little *** (rhymes with Hit,). It wasn’t- he was a lab, and a very bad one at that.

Hey everyone! Everything is basically over at my school. We took our last chemistry test before the final today. Our last math test before the final is next Thursday, but I’ll be missing that for the state golf tournament (yay! our girls team made it!). In English we’re reading Huck Finn (…it’s not fun…) and in APUSH we’re talking about the presidential election and 9/11. In Spanish we are completing the last chapter of the book before the final. Of course, finals aren’t until three and a half weeks from now, though.

I’m heading off to New Jersey this weekend with my dad and brother for my brother’s baseball games. Sadly, I don’t think we’ll have a chance to get to the Jersey Shore. Darnnit. But hey, I’ll get a tan! (And probably an even worse burn…)

As far as LORs are concerned, our guidance counselors tell us to ask whenever we feel is the right time. They really don’t aid us in the process of applying to college, especially if they know we’re very involved in the process and our school work. We have interviews with the counelors once a year. This year they asked us about what colleges we wanted to apply to and what we’re involved in and stuff. Then they help out the kids who have a decent chance at getting into a school other than the community college or local college. Or, if you’re like me and my friends, you’re constantly up the guidance counselor’s butts and they aid you every step of the way. It’s a good thing.
But yeah, I asked one of my teachers already. She’s my math teacher and her and I get along very well. She knows that math isn’t my strongest point, but she knows how hard I try. She also knows about my family struggles and thinks of me very highly. I’ve seen her writing skills and I think that she will be able to write me a good letter of recommendation.

I’m also thinking of asking my English teacher. Her and I are also very close. We gossip and talk about our daily lives with one another. I have no doubt that she will write me a good letter of recommendation. I just have to find a good time to ask her because it seems that she’s always busy or upset or annoyed about something, and I don’t want to catch her at a bad time.

I am also considering asking my principal. This is his second year as our principal, thus it is the second year that I have known him. Him and I get along very well. I am constantly in his office planning different events and just talking about daily life. We have a very good relationship. He is the advisor of a few of the clubs I am the most involved in. Typically, he describes me as someone who is very passionate about her work, very responsible, very outgoing, and very determined. I have participated in many events that him and I have planned and he has chosen me to represent the school on numerous occassions for state BOE meetings and Congress meetings and Students on the Hill Days. I’m just not sure if colleges would think that it was odd if I had my principal write a recommendation-like, would that be common? I really have no idea what other kids do for recommendations other than what I read on these boards and in my school.

Any input would be great!

My turn to vent. S missed awards night because he had a conflict. I kept asking what awards he got and he would forget to ask. Today one of his teachers gave him his awards. One he doesn’t remember what it was and is too “busy” to go and get it. The other two were scholarships. Our state works very hard to keep top students in state so the kids start getting offers in junior year. S completely brushed them off. I realize he isn’t planning to stay in state but it was an honor to be nominated. There are lots of kids who would like to attend either of these schools and be very happy if they had received the awards. He is normally a very grateful kid but I’m a bit bothered by the way he discounted these awards. He did offer to write Thank You notes to the guidance counselor who nominated him for the awards so that is a plus.

On a more positive note. S has exempted all of his exams and looks to be on track for finishing the school year with an overall 4.0 gpa. He really wanted to be able to apply to colleges with a 4.0 gpa so all the hard work has paid off.

CBGMass - an overall 4.0 is something hard earned and worth being proud of. Congrats.

Thanks nellieh, fredricksdottir and vandy: we decided that he will go and let the school know he lost the money. we don’t expect to find it back.
But as you suggested, the school should know some thing like this has happend.

I envy every one who is ending the school year soon. We have few more weeks to go.
CBGMass: congrats for 4.0 gpa. Awards are always precious to us parents, I don’t think students give much thought or importance to them.
It is good that he will be writing a thank you note to GC. It is our turn for the junior award night today.

CBG - I feel your pain about DS not “being into awards” - My DS15 is the same way but congrats on the 4.0 - Juniors need to finish strong because this is the GP that really matters!

At my DD’s school, the girls (all girl school) have a mandatory class called College Planning - they meet every 6th day (they are on a 6 day rotation with their schedule) with their counselor and about 5-9 other girls. They have done a great job prepping everything for next year. LOR’s are already lined up and the teachers are required to do them over the summer so the girls can apply right when school starts. They also do one on one’s and suggest schools and scholarships! I guess that is one benefit of paying tuition!

Our hs lists class standing right on their transcripts. DS dropped from 1st to 2nd last semester. It was an ugly day at our house, but then DS found out the kid who passed him figured out how many online APs he would need to take to get ahead of DS. After that DS was over it, he doesn’t like the whole planning your schedule based on someone else’s gpa thing. Our school has gotten rid of Val./Sal. because of the AP online issues.

reeinaz: I will be laughing all day, that sounds EXACTLY like something Sheldon Cooper would say!!!

89yahoo & Our2girls: thanks for the great advice on the asthma. I definitely feel like I have entered a whole new scary world.

YDS: Congrats on the pres!

ahsmuoh: College Planning sounds like an amazing class - I am envious!

ahsmuoh- Wow, that is an amazing college preparatory experience. We pay tuition and there is very little counsel of any kind re:college. Many of the kids go to only a handful of schools and I think part of that is that there are no suggestions of other possibilities, from either the GC or the parents.

Reeinaz- I think I love your son.

Good morning!

I am stressed out today. Tonight is the Tennis Banquet. I am doing the decorating and I volunteered to put together a slideshow using pictures another Dad took. The Dad didn’t get me the pictures until yesterday afternoon. I have an iMac and have done slideshows before for other teams without a problem. S3 put together the slideshow and we went to burn it on a DVD and realized the new iMAC does not have iDVD so even though you can make the slideshow or movie you can’t burn it on a DVD. SO we are scrambling to figure out how to play it. We can play it on S3’s macbook but we are not sure we have the right cables to connect the iMac to the projector, we burned it to a flashdrive and I sent the flashdrive to school with S3 so hopefully they will figure something out. Any ideas? I don’t know anything about projectors or things like that.

Does anyone watch Glee? I don’t watch it anymore but my D does and she had it recorded. I started watching it, for reasons unknown, and Matthew Morrison (“Will”) starting singing an acoustic version of “Forever Young” and I started Boohooing. ::
::

All the seniors at D’s school have finished having to come to class and are finished with school save the Graduation ceremony. That pretty much makes D a senior now. OMG!

tx5, this is what my dh says …

"I’d say they’re doing fine. There’s no need to burn it to a dvd or cd. Storing it on the flash drive is achieving the exact same goal - to get it on another computer.

The only issue I see is whether the slide show (which I assume was made using iPhoto), will play on a Windows PC. They may need a mac to play it on, unless they converted it to a Quicktime video, in which case it will play on anything. "

YDS: We did convert it to a Quicktime video!! Woo hoo!!

Yay TX5!!!

Swizzle13 - Great that you’re already thinking about your LORs. I don’t see anything wrong with getting a letter from your principal if you think he will talk about areas that your English and Math teacher won’t. I’m guessing he will since your relationship with him is primarily around your extracurriculars. But, be sure to read the application requirements for each college because some specifically state they DO NOT want any other LORs than what they’ve mentioned, usually from the GC and 1 or 2 academic teachers. Some say they will accept additional letters as long as they are from like a supervisor at work, pastor from your church, a coach, etc. Basically someone who will give a different angle than what you do academically.

CGBMass - How awesome that not only is your S finsihing with a 4.0 but he’s exempted from finals.

tx5athome - Glad you got everything figured out. I have flashdrives laying around the house like I used to have floppy disks…lol. I stock up whenever I see them on sale. Nothing is worse that having to send the kid to school with his project on the same thumb drive as the past 5 years of taxes!!

vandygrad - That song always plays during my commute home. Between screaming the lyrics and teary eyes, I always imagine what I must look like on all the big brother cameras. To borrow the term from the 2012 parents, wackaloon I’m sure…lol. I wonder what the youth anthem will be for our kids.

Hi all! I just wanted to pop over from the Class of 2012 thread. DS applied to a ton of schools last year, and one thing that really helped him was asking for LORs at this time of the year. He also asked 4 teachers and the vice principal. One reason is that he knew that he would need LORs for various scholarships, so he asked certain teachers to add things about his ECs, leadership, etc. One he asked for regarding his “acting talent”. He applied early to most schools so that he would be eligible for their competitive scholarships. When time came, he had plenty of recs on hand to send while most kids in his high school were getting around to asking for teacher recs.

YMMV, but I remember someone else recommending this to me last year, and I wanted to pay it forward. Good luck for next year, and see you all on the other side :)

Donivrian - enjoy the awards ceremony tonight. Ours is TH morning.

GPA Competition - S’13 is disgusted with the extent some will go to bump up GPA. He overheard one kid saying he was going to take some “easy” classes at the CC this summer to get the GPA bump. The girl with the highest GPA has been taking online and CC classes since 7th grade with the goal of having the highest GPA. I just hope they also learn something in those classes (isn’t that the point, really?).

GPA: S3’s GPA will be very diluted. Although he has an unweighted 4.0 (hopefully he will hang onto it, his AP English grade is a B right now, but we have 4 more weeks), He will take the maximum number of AP’s, but a lot of people just take the 5 periods a day plus athletics or PE and he takes 7 including journalism and production drama. Even though he gets “As” they are not “weighted” so they bring his GPA down. I know it kept someone from S2’s class from getting valedictorian (at our school the definition is top 2%). But hopefully the new principal is smarter than the old one.
