Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Momma: Thanks for the heads up on the Samsung scholarship. We won’t be eligible for that since I’ve never heard of Boys or Girls stare before coming on CC. Bummer.

Got the paperwork for D13a GSP experience. She got her first choice of campus and her interest (bio). I’m glad she got this particular campus since its one the the schools on her short list. I doubt she’d have trouble getting accepted at this school, but she would have to being up her game in the scholarship application process. They do have a great full ride scholarship with a $5k stipend for study abroad. That got her attention ;)

I have no idea how to find financial safeties that are small LACs. I’ll take suggestions. All of our safeties right now are medium to large unis. Suggest away…

Had a nice meeting with the counselor. She didn’t really tell me much that I didn’t already know (thanks cc!) But she said my level of involvement was fine  especially considering my son’s special needs. She didn’t suggest either way regarding disclosure but when I said that we had decided that he would disclose, she admitted she thought that was best if you really are concerned about fit. She suggested that S write something about it though it doesn’t have to be his primary essay. It will also be discussed in the counselor LOR. She gave me info on disability services that she got from a NACAC conference and also said that sometime next year, she will arrange a meeting with OVR to discuss what services my son would be eligible for.

She said juniors will start on their college essays right before school lets out for the summer. They are having another college prep meeting mid June to remind them of what they should be doing over the summer to prepare for the application season.

I didn’t get really any feedback on the schools on his list other than it’s a nice, if large, selection and to spend the summer paring it down. But she’s nice and seems knowledgeable and really invested in the outcome of the students.

I think I have not been on for a week----wow! so much going on–and as others have posted, too much to comment individually for “catch up”. I hope all those with illness, traumas and accidents/concussions are doing better! Congratulations to those who are celebrating the various test scores. Hugs to those who are worrying more! My D has not yet looked at her scores from May and I am afraid to look because I could be anxious or excited before she sees them. She is off with friends, finally a break for Memorial Day weekend. I guess we all just have to take big deep breaths and keep moving forward, huh?

Hi! Thanks for suggestions/comments on the 4 years of Math. Just got off the phone with Duke, and I use the term loosely… I was on hold (NOT an 800 number) for about 7-10 minutes getting the “no agents area available now as we are on the phone with others. We will get back to you as soon as possible”. Then after 10 min of that, the message simply switched to “you have dialed a number that is not in service” and then it hung up on me. I should NOT let that sour me to Duke, right?

Also, it’s so foreign to me that so many kids are out of school already, and also that they will start school in August. Here in NJ it’s always late June, and then sometime after Labor Day to start. One year it they didn’t start til September 13th!!

my3gr8…go to Duke website under addmissions…what we seek…3 years math…but if engineering…I’d do 4…

If you make it through Calculus by your Junior year wouldn’t a college consider that 4 or 5years of math? Most kids only get through Pre-Cal. I would think that you have completed more math than the average high school graduate you would be fine! I could be wrong!

Cardboard Boat Race today was interesting…
Last year they were allowed to work on it at school and leave there.
Not this year. Spent the last 2 nights at a friends working on it (God bless friends mother). It had to be 8 ft long.

Me at 8:30 pm last night: “How are you getting it to school?”

Friend 1: “Train”

Me: “Funny. Really, I’m curious.”

Son: “Really, the train.”

Me: “I don’t think they will allow it.”

My Mom “The headmaster’s Grandparents Day welcome just said he was so proud of the junior boys commitment. They walked the boat starting at 5 a.m.”

Me: “What?! From where?”

Mom: “V…'s house. It is completely ruined with all the rain.”

It is 15 miles. I really need to here the full story because I am NOT believing they walked in the rain with 8 ft of cardboard at 5 a.m.

So glad for 3 days off!

My 11 year old quiet shy girl sang a solo last night that brought tears to my eyes!
School is so much fun when I sit back and pay no attention to the academics and all attention to the fun stuff.

Have a great long weekend. Don’t forget to take time out to remember the great men & women who have served our country.

ahsmuoh–4 years is 4 years so math in 9-12th grade. I also say that most kids get through at least one level of calculus, college bound kids anyway, not just pre-calc. The other thing to consider is you can only take what your school offers so if pre-calc is as high as you can get, colleges get that information.

Our oldest had 4 years of math on his transcript but didn’t take math his senior year. It didn’t hurt him at all. Our twins will have 5 years of math on their transcript ending in AP Calc BC.

ahs, I think it will depend on how your HS reports classes taken in middle school and each college’s policy. When ds2 graduates, he’ll have seven years of math, two of those taken in middle school.

Our state requires four years of math for high school graduation. They do not count any classes in middle school towards that requirement. My D13a only has AP stats left for next year. She doesn’t really want to take it, but they won’t let her take anything else. My D13b took DE college algebra this year (99 in the class, like a BOSS!) and will be taking regular (not Adv. or AP; oh the HORROR, lol) calculus for senior year. D13b probably is done with math as far as college is concerned. Yippee!!

Walker - my son will also be taking regular calculus. It’s so funny when I hear people say they’ve never heard of regular calculus.

Longhaul - that is a hilarious story! Please report back if they did in fact do it.

SteveMA - In my district, most 9th graders take alg1. So unless they double up as a sophomore and take geometry and alg2, they won’t reach calculus in 12th grade.

SteveMA, I do think there are plenty of kids who do not do calculus. Certain most college bound engineering type students do , but I know my D is opting for AP Stats instead of calc, Many of our full IB students do not end up with AP Calc either. D will have 5 years of math on her transcript but no calc.

This is my first post but my S will have 4 years of math in HS -AP Calc Sr Year but that is because he started out a year ahead in Geometry. In our district the common path is PreCalc in Sr year. I have heard 4 yrs math is important & there is a study out there that taking 4 years of math including Calc is an indicator of college success, no matter what your major. So I’m telling my other 2 kids to take 4 years of math, even though they aren’t interested in science, engineering, etc.

S (2013) wants to go into Computer Science or Computer Engineering (CMU, UIUC, CWRU are top on the list right now). He’s still working out whether he likes hardware or software better. His grades are o.k. (3.6 uw) ACT 35, SAT II math 740 but SAT Chem only 690. We are in state for UIUC so he should be o.k. there; not sure about the other schools.

Welcome ttc!

Longhaul, what??!! Now you have to report back with the whole story!

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC

Good to have you TTC!!!

Neither of my D’s took calculus in HS. Both went through precalc in junior year and then took/will take AP Stat in senior year. One’s a history major and the other will be an english major. Neither will have taken physics either. Shocking ;)

RobD I am with your Ds. I took my last math class in high school and was delighted to be done! My father was horrified that I could graduate from UVA without taking math. Doubt that’s possible now, but it pleased me tremendously back in the last century…

I agree - most kids around us end with Pre Calc - and my kids go to schools where 95% go to college. My d13 will take AP Calc next year but my s15 may decide to take stats his senior year - more of a numbers guy over theory!

I can’t believe all of the activity here…wow!

My kids finished finals yesterday. DD13 grades have slipped…what can you do? So have DS 15. I don’t want to find excuses, but I am worried that some of it has been my fault…its been very difficult since January, with all that has been going on. Oh well, what can you do? Life happens.

Today dh took both kids to our region track and field competition. A teammate of ds’s and friend of dd’s was competing in the throwing events. I am at home, making cookies for a friend’s graduation party tomorrow (one from HS, one from college). In a funny twist, both have school colors of blue and gold, so one of the cookies is a frosted sugar cookie with the school colors.

DD did not take any subject tests. It didn’t seem like any of her schools needed it. I am hoping I’m correct!

Do most schools go “live” with their apps on July 1st? I have told dd I want her apps in before school starts August 20!

Thanks!

^^^89wahoo: D1 did have to take a math in college, basically a precalc class. Now, 4 semesters later and with the addition of a second major in the B-School, she will have to take Calc this fall. Someone (ahem) had recommended that she get calc out of the way 2nd semester of freshman year because it’s necessary if one decides to go into any of the allied health or business programs. But that didn’t happen. I suggested that it would be best to stalk the math tutoring office starting with class 1 ;)

I took calculus my senior year of HS, then an honors calc class in college. I’ve never used it but then my careers have been in advertising & libraries. DH talked his way out of college math by walking into the Dean’s office, explaining that he was a broadcasting major and didn’t see the point, and would he mind signing this waiver form? The Dean said he’d never had someone be quite so blunt about it and said sure.

VBC: I don’t think the Common App goes live till August 1st. When D1 applied, Alabama went live around July 1st but UT-Knoxville didn’t go live till August 1.
