Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Mom24, that is exactly why my D took AP Stats this year and will be taking Calc BC as a senior. We figured it would be closer to college and she would forget less calc. I never understood the point of taking Calc AB one year and then calc BC the next, there is so much overlap of the material.

Although, oldest D took Calc AB as a senior and didn’t get around to taking more calc until she was a junior in college, and she did fine with a 3 year gap. She decided she should take more college math in case she went for a PhD in Economics in the future.

D received an e-mail invite from Harvey Mudd to apply for FAST - a program to entice girls and URM to the school. If she gets accepted, they will pay her travel expenses! Only problem - she has never expressed an interest in Harvey Mudd, but she is interested in Pomona! Ethical dilemma - let Harvey Mudd pay her expenses to visit Pomona? However, she may end up liking Harvey Mudd! Then again, she may not be accepted at all.

Can anyone help me with AP credit?
How does it work?
In looking at some colleges, it appears you get credit for a class based on your score
For example , a 3 on the APUSH exam may waive a 3 unit class while a 3 or 4 may waive two 3 unit classes.

But does it also waive the gen Ed requirement that the class fulfills?

For example, if there is a requirement to take a history class, do you get out of it or just have to take a different class?

Am I making sense?

Thanks
So I un

Kangamom–every school does their AP credits differently. Some schools don’t give actual class credit but may place you in a 200 level class vs a 100 level class. Some schools will give credit for 4’s or 5’s only and how much credit depends on the class. Calc BC earns 10 credits with a 3 or higher on the test at one school we looked at but only earns placement at another. Most colleges have something on their website that tells you how the handle AP/IB tests.

Here is another link to rankings of computer science programs, again at the graduate level. This is based on rankings done by the National Research Council in several areas. More rational data driven than USNWR (not based on reputation by staff at other schools) and you can set your own priorities tp get rankings.

By the way, the National Research Council rankings are done for a lot of fields, not just computer science.

Haystack, Does this mean your school ranks in the top 500 on this list?

[America?s Best High Schools 2012 - The Daily Beast](http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/05/20/america-s-best-high-schools.html)

I would think with kids going to so many good schools, it does. Our high school is quite proud of the fact that it is ranked in the top 300.

I think the high school is on the list. The avg ACT score for the school is about a 26, highest in our state.

We have people in the HS with parents from all over the country and the world. My son’s elementary school boundary included married graudate student housing (with mostly international students) and public housing (with lots of recent immigrants). Typically, the elementary school has students from about 20 different countries.

Pretty unique for a small city in a rural state.

Terinzak, Congratulations to your SENIOR! on his great GPA. It is so sad when a close friend moves away. :frowning: Enjoy your time with your family this summer!

89wahoo- My D elected to not take Spanish (or any lang) her senior year. So she will have taken Spanish I-III. I told her to check the colleges for their recommendations. I don’t know whether she did or not. Child, meet bed. Now lie in it!

I am so, so jealous of you all with kids that are finished for the year. We are sick to death of school. I don’t even know any of the kids can be thinking clearly any more. We are enjoying the long weekend, the sun and the heat. The kids have been in the pool and friends have been over. Little S10yo went to a sleepover last night, will be here tonight and then is going on a overnight camping trip Sunday with another family. Busy, busy. I’m taking him off his ADHD med this weekend and he’ll be off until the end of August. WHOO HOO!!

Momto2- My D’s school doesn’t rank either. They don’t do a Val or Sal, but two kids are elected to speak at graduation by the students. There are not necessarily the smartest or most accomplished but are often the most liked amongst ALL the kids. It’s a small school so it works out pretty well. Our kids start back on August 28, but VB tryouts are on Aug 13. Graduation is the beginning of June.

YDS- When is he going? Over the summer or next school year? It sounds great! What state is it in?

I wonder if there is a website that lists schools that offer rolling admissions?

Longhaul- WHAT? They walked 15 miles in the rain with a cardboard boat? You D11yo’s song sounds beautiful. :-)

Welcome to TooTired!

I am horrible in math. HORRIBLE. I took Alg1, Alg2 and Geometry and then gratefully took Accounting. I took Teaching Math to Elementary School children in College and passed by the skin of my teeth. Ugh!

VBCMom- My D didn’t take any subject tests either. It didn’t apply for her choices.

I CANNOT EVEN BELIEVE that we are talking about applications going live in like, TWO MONTHS!! That just blows my mind. Seriously!!

Kanga: Both D1 and S2 got units for their AP classes. For D1 they could use them for GE’s but for S2 you can not. But, the additional units give you a better registration time. Some got you out of introductory classes like English or Calculus (or may fulfill the foreign language requirement).

Hello 13’ers.

I am with Vandy. All this talk of Math is making my head spin. I stopped after Jr year of HS after nearly bombing Alg II. I am ashamed to say I don’t know what is even TAUGHT in Pre-Calc or Calc. I didn’t have to take Math in undergrad (this was tricky but I made it happen. lol) In grad school I had to take stats and it was dicey, but I lived! ha ha

Longhaul - We MUST hear an update about the cardboard boat and the rain! This is an amazing story!

Step-D is out in San Diego with H. She visited San Diego State this morning and fell in love. The private tour that SDSU set up for her probably didn’t hurt. She’s moved it up to #2 on her list! Anyone have anything to say about SDSU - good or bad? I’d love to hear any input… I am so happy for her. It’s a great ‘fit’ school for her and I just hoped she would like it. She’s now been in California for ‘almost’ 18 hours and she’s declared it “like Florida but much much cooler.” LOL!!

TN has changed the graduation requirements starting with the class of 2013 so what applied for d1 doesn’t apply to d2. D2 has to take 4 years of math IN high school even though she took a year in middle school. Our math path has most students taking algebra 1 in 9th grade; the most advanced students take algebra 1 in 7th & geometry in 8th (which d1 started with) but the next step down is algebra 1A in 7th & algebra 1B in 8 th which is what both my girls ended up doing. The accelerated FL option is to take French or Spanish for hs credit in 8 th grade. D1 had the option to take hs science in 8th grade but they took that option away starting with d2s class.

On the transcript the MS classes are listed but only have a pass/fail note and they aren’t included in the gpa.

D2 is signed up for Spanish AP but there’s some concern there won’t be enough kids to have it make the schedule. Her only other option would be Spanish IB which she’s not interested in. I’m sure there’s going to be at least one conflict when she gets the schedule.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Memorial day! I am relaxing big time today (I’m actually typing from the pedicure chair!) and hoping to get a lot of little things done while trying to get some color lest small children think I’m a vampire…

This has been such a boring weekend without my son here. I never realize how entertaining he is until he’s away but it’s not like we sit around all day chatting either. Oh well. I did clean his room today and I’m thinking he needs to live in a dorm that does NOT allow fridges and microwaves in the room. I’m not even gonna tell you what I found in there. Let’s just say that the dog was not responsible for the smell :)

I was supposed to go to the opening weekend of The Barnes Museum tonight but just got an email saying they are eperiencing 2-3 hour waits!! Wow! I can reschedule my visit for a date of my choosing and will get 2 free guest passes. That’s nice but I was looking forward to the entertainment that was just for this weekend and I’d turned down other invitations to go to that event. So now I don’t know what I’m going to do tonight.

Does anyone here know anything about University of Minnesota-Morris or University of Alabama-Birmingham? They look like good out of state safeties for my son.

perazziman - S’13s HS also seems pretty proud and posted the results of the ranking to their website, but it’s hard for me to figure how valid any ranking comparing schools across the country can be given the dramatic differences we have all discussed on this thread. Still, nice to be recognized.

Love the sports on this holiday weekend. College lacrosse, NHL playoffs, MLB and French Open all going on.

Happy Weekend '13’ers. I hope everyone is enjoying some time off and if not, I hope it’s productive anyway.

Reeinaz, yeah, I have a son like that too - his room is scary! What saves him at school is housekeeping - they come in once a week to vacuum and clean trash bins, and if the rooms are too messy, the students get fined. Maybe I should implement fines at home? hmmm.

I recognize several schools on that list (including my alma mater) but not my kids’ schools. No surprise about our district school - college enrollment rates and SAT scores usually knock it down. DS’ school never makes those because they have no AP courses, even though they have the highest SAT scores in the state (always in the top 5) and 100% graduation/ college enrollment.

dadotwoboys, watching college softball Texas v Oregon. Both teams playing in the super regional to see who advances to the college world series. It is a slugfest and I’m not talking with the bats. Agressive play all over the field, especially at the plate, has led to ejections of both an Oregon player and a coach!

Laurendog: D1 just graduated from SDSU last week. She loved every minute. Full disclosure it was not my first choice for her but she loved every minute and could not imagine going anywhere else.

DD’13 is home! Yeah! I enjoyed taking her to see her friends graduate from the in-state boarding school where she would have graduated this year had she not gone to UWC this fall. She feels she definitely made the right decision even though she thinks she will be an old college freshman since she will be 19 going on 20. She feels that the academics were more challenging at her old school but she didn’t have time to do anything but school work and the university orchestra. At UWC she has become a wilderness guide and environmental activist and is loving it. She is starting work on her extended essay and trying to come up with a college list. She knows she needs to prepare application essays this summer before she goes to China at the end of June. She will stay busy…

ree, there’s a 2010 mom whose ds is thriving at UAB. She can’t say enough about it. He’s had amazing research opportunities and just won a major award there. PM parent56. She’ll tell you all you need to know.

vandy, sessions are this month and next. He’s going this month.

Ds is working on that SparkNotes subject test right now. At least I think he is. I have this fear we’re going to forget about that test Saturday. So much going on right now that every time I think about it, I feel a little surprised, like, Did we miss it???

Blueshoe - I enjoy the softball as well. My boys will be up in front of the Tennis Channel first thing in the am to watch the French Open. Then to the beach later in the day.

tx5athome - Thanks for the information on your D! I am so glad to hear she had the time of her life! I hope the same for Step-D  I will be hitting you (well your D) up for any tips on dorms, etc… should Step-D end up there next Fall :)
