Our school DOES NOT work on the application essays at school, although the English teacher does offer to edit them. One of the UC Prompts is the same as one of the Common Ap options, so the idea for S3 is to get those prompts done, and then move on to the essays for the supplements.

I think seniors work on essays in October, too late for the QB app, so we’re on our own there.

Ds is powering through his to-do list. Down to four items.

Had an interesting revelation today when ds and I were just talking. Even though his school has almost 100% who are college-bound (maybe one or two join the military; others take a gap year but will get there eventually), the importance that college holds really varies. I have friends who do uber-trips like some of y’all have talked about, and then some people haven’t done any at all. They’re quite content to go to a state college and not shop around, hunt for merit aid, etc. One gf has dropped her sport so she could keep her summer job. She doesn’t really see her sport as shoring up her resume or something she can’t do without, I guess. Her family is pretty well off so I don’t think she NEEDS to work, but I think maybe she’s saving for a car? Anyway, I just found it interesting that even at some high-achieving schools, the role of education isn’t seen the same.

Alas. Our school has no in-class essay writing…so D must do her writing outside of class. Of course this steals time away from her current preoccupation, which involves many hours of bubbling in little circles in preparation for another ACT. This activity is causing her to behave like a cranky beast.

It appears that my DH will have one year of benefits left on the GI bill for one of the kids to use. Still need to get verification but it will sure be nice if it works out.

Both girls had to work today. DD13b did get some studying in for the ACT. DD13a was cranky and tired from talking half the night to a boy that she met at GSP. I think he has a major crush on her :). Just don’t tell her current bf…

S is pretty much done with the Common Application. He’s waiting for his schedule so he can put in his senior classes. His activity essay is pretty good. His main essay is good, imo, but a bit long at 633 words. Omg 500 words isn’t much at all, is it. Editing will make it a lot better though. I’m really glad I left him alone to write about what he wanted, which was a talent show performance. His personality and character really come through. I think he’ll only have about 4 supplemental essays to write, but they don’t need to be done until later.

First acceptance received today view an email video that featured the president, head football coach, and a CNN anchor announcing the acceptance of son via a couple mock press conferences. Pretty cool.

Iowa State University

Congrats Haystack

Congrats, haystack’s son!

Fun, Haystack! Congrats!

Congradts Haystack. I bet you feel Great!!
Remember to post it on the new thread :)

Congrats Haystack! Way cool!

Congrats Haystack!

Trying to brainstorm on essay topics with dd is painful! She is such a perfectionist and I keep telling her to “just write” - she is stressing way too much! Thank goodness she went to an essay writing class a couple weeks ago and completed her long CA essay and she has to write the short one for her English class on Monday - I am so glad that she is being forced to do them because she would put it off and stress more!

Two essay prompts to consider - What is your comfort food and why? and “You just put a message in a bottle and through it out to sea - what did it say?”. She actually liked one of my ideas for the bottle so we will see how she makes it come alive! Personally can’t wait until this part is over for her!

Oh and congrats Haystack!

@ahsmuoh

My D’13 likes to use “write or die” when you just need to get or keep going. She used it last year when she did NANOWRIMO.

Congrats Haystack!
Essays are hard. My kid put off writing essays by starting the UC application. I asked her why because it’s not available until Nov 1. I guess I caught her procrastinating by pretending to do something else important.Just write the darn essays kid.
But I’ve reached my quotas on discussing essays today. Everything has to be done by email now. Sigh.

Congrats Haystack!!!

DD13a is going to write one of her “how did you overcome an obstacle” about her belly button. It is a very large outtie due to an umbilical hernia. It’s name is Jimmy. People really do say stupid things to her about it during swim team and people she works with life guarding and teaches swim lessons. Lol

Today I found out that my physics teacher is making a mandatory “lab night” once a week, since apparently we won’t have enough class time to do labs. I have a running conflict with it ALL YEAR. Ugh. On the flip side, the start date of the online classes I’m taking got pushed back a week! This is great for me because one of the classes requires a prereq that I don’t have, and even though I BSed my way out of the placement test I have to learn the prerequisite material (ie: read 400 pages out of a textbook). Which I’ve, uh, neglected to begin.

Congrats Haystack - What an awesome way to get the news.

Congratulations Haystack & son!

Great news Haystack. Congrats to your S.
