Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Tttc - I told my son to think about the things about himself that he likes to talk to people about. Not in a bragging way but in the way we tend to have stories about things we did or events that happened. That’s where all his ideas came from.

My S kind of brainstormed a list of things that define his personality or make him different from average - Japanese horror movies, video games, 13 years of dance lessons, lots of world travel, performances he’s been in, people who have influenced him, etc. He didn’t want to write about his Aspergers.

We went to a presentation by Case Western, Emory, Brandeis, and University of Rochester today. It was a short talk by each school with Q&A afterwards. S has wanted to go to Emory all along, but he liked Brandeis presentation, so he is going to check it out online.

We have SWA credits that have to be used by Jan 30, we may be flying to Boston.

Has she been talking to me son, the vampire? Drives me nuts!

I think D is finally finishing the last of the English summer work as I type this. I really dislike all the summer homework, especially at this point. I think they should have had to complete the CA and write the essay for homework, and that’s it!

(((((hugs))))) for everyone dealing with “lasts” as we start out this school year. We’re going to need some extra Kleenex.

Thanks laurendog. I talked to my friend about it, and her parents are writing a strongly worded email about this extra time commitment. Also, apparently half the school has some sort of church thing Wednesday evenings, so chances are good that it’ll get rescheduled or maybe cancelled (dare I hope?).

First day of school is tomorrow! I’m actually sort of excited, but I know it’ll wear off by the end of the first week and I’ll be counting the days til Thanksgiving. The grass is always greener… OH and I still have 100 pages to read of Frankenstein. Also, for the past several weeks I’ve been sleeping from 3 AM to 12 or 1 so this is going to be a rough adjustment. Ah well, I’m only posting this to procrastinate reading Frankenstein, so I’ll be going now.

Uh, but that would make sense and actually be productive.

dd’s first day of senior year is today - she reluctantly took a picture this morning! Her brothers school had a football game last night but she had to stay home because she was finishing her summer homework - she texted me at 10PM “I’m done!” She literally did 10 hours of homework yesterday - when will she learn?

I need to stay off the Parents of the College class of 2016 thread - makes me tear up every post!

This is overwhelming… My first day on CC so yes I am getting a late start as the parent of a 2013 HS graduate. As I’m navigating around I see 11,000 posts on this thread and think OMG, how much information am I going to miss if I don’t read every post! What if I ask a question that already been asked! Why did I wait so long to find this message board!

kairosntx-Welcome! Feel free to jump in! Nice people here.

Senior pictures done. She took over 300 photos. I can’t wait to see them. No work on essays though. They have to scramble to get summer homework done, read a couple books, do a Calc packet. School starts in a week. Leaving Thursday for our last round of visits before applying. They will have car/airplane time to do homework :D.

Congrats Haystack. Iowa State is a wonderful school.

Sent DD13b off to school with seven envelopes for transcripts and other forms. I don’t understand why our school won’t load them onto the common app. Oh well, more work for them I guess.

Working on helping DD13a this week. She wants me to look over her CA and make sure it’s all good. How the heck would I know? It’s not like I’ve done this before! I will look it over but I’m worried that we haven’t done the CA “right”. Sigh.

A shout out to all my gulf coastal peeps to be safe from Issac. I got a funny meme with Issac from the Love Boat’s face in the hurricane’s cone of probability. Hilarious.

Walker1194–I think that having online access to the Common App/Naviance costs money so the school may choose not to do that to save money–just a guess.

Ours is the same way - they want them to apply using the common ap, and the transcripts are sent electronically through Naviance, but the LORs go by mail directly from the teachers. They have to fill out paper transcript requests though. I find it odd, and a pain, especially for the teachers who have to photocopy the recommendation form and mail them out. I bought envelopes that are self-sticking so they don’t have to lick 'em!

We still have another week before school starts, I am not sure if the counselors have figured out the CA yet, but 3 years ago, when S2 applied, the teachers did their LORs online, but the counselors did not.

I gave D13 the summer off from the college train with the agreement that we would get back on it today. She already has her list and her testing is complete. This week she has an interview and the last pre-app college visit. She already knows what she is going to write about for her essay and claims she will have it done this week…so I am keeping my fingers crossed! I would love to have her hit the send button next week on all the schools on her common app list - which is 7 out of 8.

We are getting ready to send a care package to one of DD’s friend’s who is freshman in college. She sent me a facebook message that she missed us :D. DH made her favorite cookies yesterday to send.

Common app question—do we have to attach everything before we send off the actual applications–LOR, transcripts, etc. (well the counselors attach that) or can they send the applications and have the school forward the rest next week?

First day of senior year! Woot!

Welcome, kairo. You’ll be glad to know that many of the 11,000 posts are junk and not at all helpful. :D

I am totally confused by how/what our school is doing with Naviance/CA. Apparently, some of the teachers send LORs online, and some don’t so you still have to do the envelope and stamp thing. What a pain. Steve, at our school you don’t have to wait for everyone to do their part; you send your stuff and hope that the rest of it catches up.

Walker, the common app tweeted a couple weeks ago there is no “right” way to complete the activities section. If your daughters are worried about this section, reassure them that they should be including in this section just the things they want colleges to know. Now my D did stress over getting her time spent doing these things accurate. As others have said, it is hard to calculate time spent for an activity when the time varies at different times of the year.

Welcome, Kairo. Don’t worry about missing any information. I went back and read the HS Class of 2012 from the beginning to Dec just to get some ideas and strategies about applying early to some colleges that my daughter is interest in . Some of the posters in that class is extremely helpful.
I’m still waiting to wake up, so nothing coherent will come from my posts until I get my first cup of coffee. Just to warn you all. :D
