SteveMA: I may just do that…thanks :)

University of Alabama - College of Engineering Scholarships 2013-2014

(for engineering and computer science majors)

Out-of-State

Students who have a 27-29 ACT or 1210-1320 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $1,500 per year for four years.

The one below is truly amazing…full tuition plus 2500 per year for an ACT 30 or 1330 M+CR SAT!.
Students who have a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive a tuition supplement to bring their University-level scholarship offer up to the value of tuition. In addition, they will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

(Re: the below scholarship…If majoring in something other than engineering or comp sci, students with the below scores will still be given a full tuition scholarship, but the extra 2500 per year would not be awarded for other majors)

Students who have a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

Students must maintain enrollment in a College of Engineering degree program to receive any College of Engineering scholarship."*

Students MUST apply before Dec 1st and submit the scholarship app (even though the awards are assured for stats, the scholarship app must be submitted).

NMSF! My principal notified me today, said there were 3-4 other students too. Tonight I’ll try and do the bama scholarship app, now that I can check that box. :D

napalm: WAY TO GO!!!

Hello all. Checking in. Congrats to those acceptances coming in.

D and I are wrapping up a mid west tour.

We visited John Carroll University a Jesuit school I the suburbs of Cleveland. A great and very friendly school. The students weren’t so welcoming and engaged I the community. I LOVED it for D. She also could see herself happy there. We have a safety that we are "“in like with”.

Congrats on the NMSF scores! I hold out little hope for ds. So far he’s still two off, but I suppose the cutoff could keep going down.

Rob, good work on the UA engineering info! :)

We also visited MiamiU in Ohio. Beautiful campus and we had a great meeting with the dean of Ds program. She wanted to like it so much but has decided it will not get an application. There was a serious lack of diversity not just in cultures, colors, religions but in how they dressed. Students-even the tour guide were a bit aloof.

We are now in Beautiful Bloomington-visiting IU. D is pretty smitten with the campus energy. It is lovely and I found the students friendly. The size was overwhelming to me but D feels it is manageable. Her opinion carries more weight than mine. The biggest concern for us is distance from home. Sounds like she has a match she loves.

napalm2013–WAY TO GO!!!

DD got an email from her GC this morning so I sent her up there with some athletic forms they need to send–they sent her home with the transcript release form!! Making a copy and having BOTH kids fill it out, like now.

Napalm: if you haven’t already, go to the NMSF forum to add your state & cutoff.

Congrats napalm!

Just found out from the NMSF forum that 216 made it in TX, so perazzison’s 219 is good! Also found out from the school that he is good for National Hispanic Scholar designation. Earlier in the month, we found out he earned three 5s and a 4 on his AP tests. So, it is all coming together nicely for him, all except for class rank, which is pretty low, 25 percentile. I got a copy of his transcript and it turns out there are nine courses from middle school on it. The way they are weighted (on a 4.0 scale) they are pulling down his class rank. If we pull out middle school, his rank would be closer to 13 to 15 percent. It is not a big deal, but it seems strange that they have not found a better way to calculate class rank. I mean, who would think if you took high school courses in middle school to challenge yourself that would bring your class rank down compared to the kid who did not?

Perazzi, our school district won’t put middle school courses on the transcript, except by request for early graduation or something like that…even if taken at the same high school the child is attending. You should request that they be removed.

S received a mailing from Carleton today titled “National Merit,” which went on to say he’s competing, blah, blah. Do they send these out to 70000 people (like Harvard), or is it a good sign? Just curious…

DT2 found out that he made NMSF today from the counseling office, but they asked him to keep quiet about it until we received the official letter at home ('m not sure the reason behind that). Does anyone know when the letters are received at home?

If National Merit means semifinalist then I think the most they could send out would be 16K.

mummy24: I have reason to be fairly certain they send those only to NMSF’s, so consider it a good sign, if not confirmation. The colleges do receive mailing lists before the information is released to qualifiers.

perraziman: HS administrations, in my experience, are astoundingly “tone deaf” to what would be fair in their GPA calculations and class rankings. While advocating for weighted GPA at our HS (which does not weight at all) an administrator responded “But that would devalue the work of the students who don’t take honors and AP classes!” End of conversation.

Thanks all! RobD I posted on the NM forum, but I had a 225 so I don’t think it helped with the cutoff much If any of your kids are waiting, people have chimed in from most states so you might want to check.

Mumto3, I think they might be sent out around the embargo date (sept. 12) but I’m not too sure.

Congrats to perazziman’s S!

Actually its only about half, and only five are final, but if anyone knows any more that can help inform us all, please do. We’re especially looking for posters from some of the more populous states, such as CA and NY.

I’ve been watching the NM forum too - waiting on Ohio :)

congrats napalm

How do you know your scores for NMSF?
