Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Well, I joined D at her meeting with the GC. It lasted 1.5 hours, so I was pleasantly surprised with the time she gave us. About reaches, she said, well your chance is about as good as any, so I was glad she did not flat out discourage her. I really think it was good for D to practice answering questions about herself.

If I had to do it over, I would have printed out everything from Naviance, resume and survey, in a large font, and handed it to her. Also, D’s college list should have been printed out on separate sheet of paper, in big font. When we said U of Michigan, she wrote down U of Mississippi. Sigh.

Hi everyone! It has been a long time and I have been trying to catch up but not able to post.

Thanks for whoever recommended taking a picture of first day of senior year with kindergarten picture. It is adorable and D has it as her profile picture on Facebook!

Since I posted last I had my high school reunion, more difficult to remember people now (: Very fun though! D made Varsity tennis again, S15 is doing well in Jazz Band and had a good first race in XC yesterday. Little D is so on top of it and organized that I think she will inherit the house (: Makes our lives so much less stressful!

D has completed most essays and is changing one sentence on Common Ap and she is ready to press send. One application has been sent. She is getting all the Harvard, Yale (most from here), Columbia stuff and she is nonplussed like annie’s D and not applying.

If your child knows that they are only going to be National Merit Commended can they put it on their resume for LOC’s. Same question for AP scholar. No word yet from either but she knows she qualifies for both and knows by her score she won’t make the cutoff for NMSF?

RobD—How was Kenyon for D? Did she enjoy it?

Car is fine. AAA came and jumped in but the car wouldn’t stay on. AA said battery was bad so I took it to the shop where I had the battery replaced in 2011. Shop said battery was fine, it was just a loose terminal. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that the car starts when it’s time for me to leave work.

Friday (1st day of school) can’t get here soon enough! S is spending his days writing My Little Pony fan fiction on an online forum. It’s a cross between MLP and a video game, Assassin’s Creed. He’s written about 30000 words so far and it seems to be getting a very good response. Why oh why can’t he be so enthusiastic about his college essays.

Got a little teary eyed this morning.

1st Day of School - Weather held off long enough so that the seniors could canoe into school (a tradition started the year my son was in K). Local paper already has the photos on-line!

Also got the official word from counselor that son made NMSF!

@wherenext - I think it is fine to put the AP Scholar and NMCommended on resume. The AP Scholar items began mailings last week. If the same as in past years, all should be out before this Friday and by next Monday I’d expect all would have received the info. AP Scholar mails the items direct to student.

Senior photos - I don’t think we are taking any. Am I the only one?

Senior photos…we have not scheduled them. I think we plan on doing something eventually, just a few ‘artsy’ casual shots in a downtown alley. We have spent alot of time downtown (we live in a college town) as a family so it makes sense.

Vandygrad - yes the transcript requests are only under the student sign in’s on naviance. I looked and looked and my dd kept saying “they are right on the top”. I thought I was going crazy and then realized that the parents don’t have access. Which, I guess, is a good thing!

Of course the essay can be reused. Much better to do a great job on a single essay that can be used lots of places than to spread yourself thin writing more essays.

The colleges won’t know. They won’t have access to the applications submitted to other colleges.

It is much more dangerous to try to reuse the Why College X type essays, since you don’t want to include references to the wrong school.

Thanks for the input Longhaul. D is only doing the school required yearbook pictures. No fancy pictures. She is hoping for bigger milestones that she will want to have proof of. I get the feeling that the real reason is she doesn’t want the hassle.

Hope the car is holding up Reeinaz!

Senior pictures ~ we bought the cd (214 pics for $100) from our photographer (it was a special early reserve price) and had DS’s wallets, 8x10s and 11x14 printed through mpix.com (super reasonable). We ordered 4x6s (9 cents each) and 5x7s (59 cents each) and a really cool book that I put together of my favorite pics ($24.99) at Walmart. I got more pics than we will ever give away for less than $100.

Greetings from sunny, humid Orlando!!!
Here on business for a Trade Show, so trying to catch up between meetings…

But I must share, Jr just sent me the BEST message. He has been selected to represent the Class of 2013 from our school at the Inauguration in DC in Jan!!! Not sure if that is a valid item to add to Jrs College resume…but I still think it is pretty damn cool!!

MDMom1314 ~ Congrats that is awesome!!!

Your school sends a student to the inauguration? Wow! My D froze her butt off at the last one, but she was a college student in DC then. Since it is over MLK weekend this time, there may be even more people there.

MDmom: The inauguration sounds VERY COOL!!!

Senior Pictures: Still waiting for the re-takes to come up on the website. After seeing some other professional pictures (rather than the professional ones done at school) I am very jealous and want him to do some, but I worry because we did not do senior pictures outside of school for D1 or S2. Hmmm.

AP Spanish. S3 had AP Spanish yesterday and he was one of two non-native speakers in the class. He said the other students were joking if he was in the wrong class. He thinks it will be great.

With 10 schools (each CA plus a supplemental essay or short answers) = 11+ essays–we better be able to re-purpose! My D likes to write and got a head start this summer, but it will still be torture/painful. Yes, Tx5, we will use UC prompt #2 to double up with CA essay. Some apps have another space for “anything else you want to tell us about yourself.” Are your D/Ss using that space?

We did senior pictures. The photographer we used does a charge for the sitting fee and with that you get the disk and 10-15 edited photos of your choice. You can then print them anywhere you want. Bargain for our area. The school doesn’t do a drape or cap and gown type thing, you just send in your favorite senior picture.

Yay!!! S was chosen for a diversity visit at his reach school.

Congrats to your S reeinaz! And on the inauguration trip, MDmom!

Well I thought D had a final list that we were all happy with (DH and I with the merit prospects) but she decided today she wanted to add a reach school that was her first choice early on but then fell off the list. Oh well, she knows the decision to attend will have to include financial considerations if she gets accepted. At least it isn’t a school the guarantees NO merit aid.

Reeinaz-congrats! What college is he doing the visit? My DD is going to a few as well. Dartmouth, Harvey Mudd and Swarthmore.

reeinaz - Congrats!

DS submitted his first app! Yay! It is a rolling admission school so maybe we will hear something relatively soon. Next deadline is to have the CA done by Wed! I love this new weekly deadline schedule “we” came up with.
