Parents of the HS Class of 2013

MommyDearest13–DD applied to 9 schools and DS 12–about half of each were on the common app, thankfully!

Ezilyamused–you are going to find that at most top schools, especially for classes in her major. We were told that the reason they don’t accept dual enrollment credits is because most kids take those classes through a community college, and at least in our CC system, you really can’t compare those classes to one you would take a top school. A couple schools did say, outside of the info session when we asked, that they do consider on a case by case basis Dual credits if they were taking through a state flagship like our state does, but still not in major courses, only for electives.

As for “recognizable name” that will all be relative. I am sure there are plenty of schools in OK that you know about that I have never heard about, same with schools in our state that are very good schools. She does need to define “recognizable name” though. Does she really mean just top 10 schools or would a school like Nebraska be ok because they show up every Saturday on TV?

What size school does she want?

Apollo6-have you run the net price calculators at each school? We found that our EFC is the same, however, that number is divided between the two kids so, say you are paying $20,000 right now, child A pays $10,000 and child B pays $10,000. It can make a huge difference depending on what formula each school uses and especially if one or both of the schools meet 100% of need. We were doing the opposite of you, assuming they would both be paying our EFC and when I ran the NPC I was pleasantly surprised at the difference. I would call the FA office at a couple schools she is considering and ask them just to make sure. We have been told this is how it will work for us at a couple schools where I remembered to ask.

Also, keep in mind that if she is an above average student or better, with a 28 or better on the ACT, she will get some pretty nice merit aid from most LAC around the country, especially the Midwest schools so don’t rule them out until you get your final aid package. Every school on our kids’ list with the exception of one lottery school comes in far less than what our kids would pay at our state flagship, and even less then our state directionals because of automatic merit aid. Our state flagship would be our kids’ most expensive choice if they considered going there :D.

Appollo, I’d also suggest talking directly with the financial aid offices at a few of D’s school choices to explain your situation and get more information. Not everyone’s situation can be accounted for in those calculators and you just don’t know how it will work out.

And look at Denison - it uses FAFSA only, so the formulation may work out differently for you. They have some very generous merit aid for kids with your D’s stats, and I thought it was a lovely school.

Good Morning! I thought things were going well…until last night; DD had a melt down. She has taken on a lot of EC’—that are demanding time, has SAT studying to do, CA to do and 5 AP classes–all with quizzes/tests this week (first full week of school) AND SHE IS A MAJOR PROCRASTINATOR!!! So, she is sleep deprived. I have to figure out how to ignore these meltdowns----I know she is the one who has to “figure it out”…ugh.
Congrats to the completed APPS!! I can’t wait (but will have to wait!) for DD to get hers done!

drmom123–DD is prone to being crabby when she doesn’t get enough sleep. It was always a rule if she wanted a sleepover, even as a little kid, that she was NOT allowed to be crabby around us. If she was feeling off, she went to her room and played in there. She still does that because she knows I don’t put up with crabby kids :D.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Tulare is one that she is considering although I worry about safety there. We’ll check into Case. I’ve heard here on CC that both offer good merit aid?

Her strategy is to apply to in-states but they are all safeties and maybe not quite the challenge she’s looking for. For reaches, she only wants to consider schools that would be recognizable when she applies to prof school. Our in-state (cheaper) med schools prefer applicants who stay in-state for UG, so going out of state is risky unless the school is “impressive”.

These kids are all under a lot of pressure, trying to keep up their grades this year and get through the college application process. Its so difficult.

Ezilyamused–if she is thinking about med school, she should apply to schools where she will come in at the top 25% of the applicant pool and be a superstar. Obviously you want a strong science program to go along with that. The initial weed out for med school is all GPA and MCAT scores–not the UG you attended at all. It’s all computerized. Attending an “impressive” school isn’t always the best route to medical school. https://services.aamc.org/tsfreports/select.cfm?year_of_study=2012</a> shows OK to be one of the least expensive med schools and just a guess, means they probably have a LOT of applicants as a result. I wouldn’t count on getting into med school there so realistically, where she goes to UG isn’t going to be as important.

One school she should consider is Truman in MO. They are affiliated with 2 medical schools and have a very high placement rate for their grads. All of the schools DD has looked at have 95% or better for kids that applied to med schools getting in on their first try. None of these schools would be considered “impressive” by anyone here (except Truman) :D.

Creighton would be another very good option for her.

Steve…You give the BEST advise…I think you have a new career for when yours go to College next year!!! Thank You for being on this Thread…

Ama308-awwww, shucks, mam, just glad I can help :D.

True about med school… they don’t care where you did your undergrad. My DH’s lab partners in med school were from Johns Hopkins, UMich, Duke… DH went to the University of Southern Mississippi. He did just fine in the admissions process because of his stellar GPA (3.98) and a good MCAT score.

Walker: Wife and I are both Southern Miss grads. They have no ChemE degree or I’d be encouraging DD to look there. Even out of state they are inexpensive.

My son & I are driving each other nuts. He is already so far behind in homework :frowning: He hasn’t started college essays.

So jealous of SteveMa’s kids being done/near done.

Happy Margarita Monday!!!
And I think that SteveMA deserves a special toast for a job well done :D

Finally made it home after a long travel day just in time to wake Jr up from falling asleep on his AP Physics book. Is anyone else missing summer???

I am totally missing summer!

Oh, my here is a comic that I think everyone on this thread can understand!

[Zits for 9/9/2012 | Zits | Comics | ArcaMax Publishing](<a href=“Zits | Comics | ArcaMax Publishing”>Zits | Comics | ArcaMax Publishing)

Hahahahaha
Thanks. Needed a laugh today :)

Lol surfcity!
I’ve heard a lot of kids say the science section was extremely hard. I feel so badly for the kids, mine included, who prepared for the ACT, only to potentially have the science mess up their composite score. Was it someone on here that said if you had AP Bio and AP Chem it helped? I thought it wasn’t supposed to be like that? Nuts :(

I’m not missing summer! Happy for Fall and the routine, even though I barely get a chance to speak to D - she goes from school to practice, eat, shower, homework, bed.

mamabear- I agree. I’m happy for Fall when it comes to ME and being able to have my schedule and not have my house be a wreck all the time. But, OTOH, I’m sorry for my D because I have seen her stress level go through the roof.

Getting hot again tomorrow, so I’m enjoying the cooler weather and the windows open while I can. Mamabear - your weather is probably just like ours, but 8-12 hours later.

S’13 is MIA after school today. I can’t keep it all straight.
