Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Are interviews required? My D never did any and got accepted to plenty of great colleges.

Good morning! I have been very cranky the last few days. I am not exactly sure why.

Last night we were watching TV in my room since we were trying to not distract S3 while he was studying. So by the time Parenthood came on DH, D1 and S2 and I were all in our bed watching. So when they said that it wouldn’t be her home any more I had to laugh. Because that really isn’t the case here. Mine are like boomarangs, they keep coming back! After 4 years away (but home every summer) D1 graduated and is home for a year in a MAT/credential program. And S2 still has another week until he goes back to college. And although it was hard at first when they each left, after awhile DH, S3 and I really enjoyed the lack of chaos. And right about now I am missing it. I thought it was odd when they let her go on the plane by herself too. I definitely think nowadays both parents, or at least one parent would have gone. They probably could have had a pretty funny scene with Max and the baby and the parents all trying to move her in. But a lot rang true with the student having an agenda on what they want to do prior to leaving and the family having their own agenda.

Essays: I bought the Bauld book and read it. I learned a lot and gave it to S3 and told him he needs to read it. We had a long talk about what differentiates him and the other top students at his school. And the truth is, what differentiates him is his personality and the only way for that to come out is in the essay. So, today at least, I feel hopeful.

Sounds like I need to watch this Parenthood show…

Glad to hear my kid isn’t the only one stressed and prone to existential meltdowns! And then, the next day, is chipper and all is well with the world, while I am picking mortar shells off my body. I’ve got to learn to just roll with it, let it flow over me without absorbing the intensity. To that end, I am now taking a yoga class twice a week. :-)

RobD- I can only advise as to what I would do and if the Meet and Greet is going to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, I’d be inclined to skip it. She can demonstrate interest though email, sending a card etc as well.

I have Parenthood on the DVR. Sounds like I should tune in!

Got an email from the GC, who met with D yesterday. The email pretty much explained to me what she and I have already done. How useful. lol

My S is a junior at WUSTL, majoring in poli sci, and is really happy there. I wish I could find another school just like it, except less selective, for my D’13.

There are a lot of great things about the school - high quality of life (food, dorms, pretty campus, etc.), great advising and support services (i.e., lots of tutoring options available for the popular intro classes), accessible professors, etc. The medium school size allows for a great combination of a personal touch (not generally available at large U’s), plus a wide range of majors and courses offered (not generally available at LACs). The range of course offerings in the poli sci department is quite impressive. My S’s biggest complaint has been having to work harder than he did in high school. The students are serious about their classes, but not competitive with each other.

It is not a rah-rah sports school - it is Division 3. My perception might be colored by the fact that my S is not at all a sports fan, but he says he rarely hears anything about school sporting events, and has never attended one. But there are lots of ECs offered, with good school financial support.

The school draws students from across the country, and international, based upon where my S’s friends are from. Various political points of view are represented. Anecdotally, Asians seem to represent the largest minority on campus, with lots of both Asian-Americans and international Asians. Although St. Louis itself doesn’t have a great reputation, the area around the school is quite nice, but does fall off quickly as you head towards the inner city. Access to the airport is easy via light rail from near campus, and being in a city is convenient for flights home.

Feel free to PM me if you have any particular questions about Wash U.

Off the top of my head, ‘similar’ (med size universities in nice locations) to Wash U but less selective…

Denver
U San Fran
Butler
Seattle U
St Thomas U (Minneapolis)
Trinity U (TX)

Small World ( not sure if the pun was intended)

That settles it. We all need to plan a Disney Cruise to occur after we ship them off to college. We all will need spa treatments by then. Meet me at the DIS Cruise board And let’s plan a cruise. The username is TnRobin. Say the word and I will start a thread for the parents of 2013 freedom cruise. UGAMom can spread the word on the community Board.

Four apps submitted for DD13a. I didn’t even see the supplemental essay’s she wrote. I’m sure they are good. She is an amazing writer.

I sent the school a list of dates that my kids will be out for college stuff (mostly DD13b). I will be very interested in their response. Tough beans, paper pushers!

About to go to lunch with the swim coach. The season is cranking up! I am also looking at all of the conflicts that DD13b has with the schedule. Thank goodness the coach is understanding! We going to be soooo busy this year! It doesn’t hurt that kiddo can seemingly just jump in a pool and be reasonably competitive even in a very competitive region.

Also booked an honors college visit to one of our state schools for DD13a. She got an invitation in the mail and she has agreed to look at the school as a safety. I visited before with DD13b and I really think it might be a good safety for both. Medium sized, five minutes from Big City and offers everything they need including good merit money.

Jr was up at 5:15 finishing up HW for AP Lit and rec’d an unexpected email from a Track Coach. (We will call him Coach M.) He has been recruiting Jr since last Sept, but was at a school that was not to high up on Jr’s list. Well, he is now the new Hurdles Coach at Jr’s #2. Jr is soaring at this point to have this option open up again :)

Looks like this week is going to make a turn for the best after all  :)

Is it just me, or does this sound really ignorant?

How long have you lived in California?
I have lived in California my entire life.
I have lived in California since I moved here.
I don’t live in California.

Hello???!!!

Lmao… ^^^^^^

^^^ LMAO!!!

DD13a got the Big Blue Book of Love from Columbia in the mail today. What the heck is THAT about?!!

MommyDearest13-we need the ink to print other forms for apps though :D.

DS talked to the counselor, they won’t fax over a copy of the score report either. I don’t get it??? I would like to know who made this policy and why. It’s just silly==and expensive! DS got a call from an ad comm at one school checking to see where his transcripts were–at 10:00 this morning, no, he’s at school now :D. I jokingly told her I could send over a copy from their online gradebook and she said ok–so everything is in there now. Crazy.

They keyboard on my brand new laptop went out this morning. Fortunately an external keyboard is working.

Good news is we are getting some much needed rain :D.

I’ve lived here since I moved here too   :D

How weird! I’ve lived here since I moved here, too! Small world indeed.

Is that really on the UC app???

Got official confirmation that ds made NH Scholar. :)

Yay YDS!! What the heck is NH Scholar? lol

SteveMA: My famous line that I have never lived down is “I woke up last night and it was dark.” Good Grief.

Welcome to all the newbies! Having trouble keeping up on this board. It’s like a full time job.

Walker–the line at our house for years was “shut up and tell me…”:D. My sister was trying to tell my dad a story and kept getting side tracked and my Dad got frustrated and said “would you just shut up and tell me”. We thought it was pretty funny at the time.

GC just called to tell me that DS doesn’t need to request Parchment/Docufide to send transcript to CA schools because she loaded it with her school forms. I thought I was going to have to pay for all of those transcripts!

We were finally, officially, told DS is a NMSF. Principal and GC weren’t to happy that we already knew.

Is there any reason not to send ACT/SAT scores to schools before application is submitted?

Yes, it is really on the UC app. It doesn’t really want to make me hand over thousands and thousands of dollars for my kids to go there!

Walker, National Hispanic Scholar. :)
