Parents of the HS Class of 2013

TGIF!!!

Jr seems to be moving on with his Coaching issue… His current HS Coach has told him not to worry. He said that with his grades and his times, he could be a preferred walk on where ever he goes. Sure with his HS Coach was head of Admissions at school #1 :/

Docufide/Parchment seems to be clicking on all cylinders!!! Already rec’d a notice that USC rec’d Jr’s transcripts!! Praying that ACT/Collegeboard will be just as fast…but not holding my breath.

He is down to 5 schools…THANK THE GOOD LORD ABOVE! Mind you, 4 of the 5 are HMFR’S, but as the saying goes, “Love thy SAFETY”, and he does :D

Welcome to all newbies and lurkers. For the record it is “pick your poison Friday” ;)

That will be up to each College. Depending on his grades and classes taken. You should be specific with questions and bring his transcript with you or have him forward it to the colleges he is applying to. He will most likely have to take placement tests for math and science classes. He may place out of electives at some schools. But this is really up to each school.
Where is he applying?

Got a series of texts from ds while he was at school today and I was at work. I’m guessing the texts stemmed from his first AP Lit essay grade today (which I don’t know) He said he wants to drop AP lit, quit his sport, and withdraw his ED from his favorite school! He said he took the “drop” form to his AP lit teacher and she refused to sign it (pat on the back to her!). At parents night she told us that this is a challenging class and there will be a settling in period to work through. From ds’s perspective, he thinks anything less than an A is unacceptable (type A) and that a low grade sent out for first quarter is going to destroy his chances at any of the schools on his list. DS is not used to academics not going his way, so I know I have to let him handle this one on his own. College is challenging, life isn’t always rosy, there are bumps in the road. Letting go is so hard, which is why I’m venting here. My stomach has been in knots all day! My only advice to him via text was to go talk to his advisor - that’s why he has one, and she’s great. Unfortunately all this has happened on the day he has his first college interview after school.
Thanks for “listening”.

Carla: My S only sent two texts during his OV last week- one when he arrived and one when he was boarding the plane to leave. He had a great time and was too busy to text or call. Your D is probably having fun and I would say that no news is good news.

Mommydearest… Congrats !!!

Swimsupstream…good call on your part to have him talk to his advisor… Breathe slowly… This time next year they will Have to handle things my themselves… I’m sure things will work out and be fine…

SUP: If it helps, assure him there are tons of really good students with a B from a hard-grading AP course teacher. My assumption is that colleges are smart enough to know that. Sometimes (not always, sadly), these hard teachers are actually good; they just demand a higher and unfamiliar standard of performance. Your situation sounds like this might be the case. Many students, at long last, learn study skills with the extra demands.

Did your apple fall not to far from the tree?

I was just thinking today of good times with S…when he was a year and a half old we lived out west. My alma mater is in the midwest so their football games often came on TV at 9am Saturday. I used to take the boy to the sports bar for breakfast, fed him french fries and ice cream. He then would run around a bit while I watched the game. The employees always got a chuckle. His mom would come pick him up at half so I could finish the game.

We live in a college town now. He sees students sitting out on their front porch on ratty couches drinking refreshments and playing bags. Thinks it looks pretty cool.

Is it any wonder that he prefers schools with D1 football?

cromette - thank you I did not know the universities websites had a way to look up what transfers. I will check into that today!!

Ama308 - right now he is applying to Appalachian State, UNC - Charlotte, and maybe a couple others as far as state schools go. Still trying to figure that out and still touring. No one has mentioned placement tests to us at any of the schools we have looked at so far. He has had all of his core classes (math, english, etc) taught by high school teachers so those are HS credits not college. They were all honors classes not AP.

He has pretty high GPA but test scores are lacking, but still waiting on most recent ACT score. So that is another stumbling block we will have to cross. Just trying to wrap my head around all of the lingo and see how my S will compare to others he is applying with.

luvthat48–it really depends on the accepting college. Some schools will take a credit for credit transfer of those classes, usually only the state school in your state, some schools won’t recognize those classes at all. I have yet to see a school that won’t consider him a freshman though. Many have changed their wording to account for the dual enrollment classes. Our dual enrollment is through our flagship and even some of those credits won’t transfer to some schools. The transfer policies are pretty much in line with their AP policies however-meaning if they don’t take transfer credits for dual enrollment, they generally don’t give credit for AP classes either. I’m surprised that the schools you have visited didn’t have very much information. These DE programs are pretty common across the country now.

swimsupstream-The W/D will look WAY worse to his colleges then a B in a challenging course (or even a C).

The only progress on Naviance for our kids is that the “preliminary paperwork” was sent to the school that has already sent DS’s acceptance. I’m getting a little frustrated here. DD is supposed to check with the GC today (well was supposed to yesterday but “forgot”) to see if her transcripts have been sent. It’s one week away from October folks and we have a LOT of back and forth to deal with for her—and the GC KNOW this. If she doesn’t get anywhere with this today I may have to break my own rule and call the GC myself!!!

luvthat48,

Perfect, at Appalachian State your early college kid will be classified as a freshman, per their Admissions page, and here’s a link to course equivalents.

[Transfer Equivalency Course Search](Transfer Equivalency Course Search)

luvthat48,

My experience with dual enrollment has been good within the same state. D1 transferred 21 hours - all dual, D2 transferred 35 between dual and AP, and although D3 will earn about 59 between dual and AP, i think she will actually transfer 29, most of them dual.

Steve - I understand the angst of transcripts being sent. dd’s GC says they will send them within 10 school days - do you know on naviance if their is a “submitted” status for transcripts and LOR? It now says “requested” - has been 8 school days. DD will request a few more on Monday for Oct 15th deadlines - hope the 10 days is true (will have a 5 day cushion). Most of dd’s deadlines are at least by Nov 1st - all for merit aid.

Thank you so much!

I am going to check on the transfers a little later today. I know he will have over 60 college credits when he graduates so I am anxious to see how many will actually transfer.

Cromette thanks for the link I will be researching that more!!

I think the reason we have not gotten much information from the schools yet is that I was relying on S to get that information for us. He went on a few tours without us (work obligations) and I have learned that I need to go to make sure we get what we need. All of the tours we have upcoming I will be attending so I will be sure to ask about their acceptance of college credits as some of these schools are private.

Luvthat48,

Good idea - going with him. I have learned the hard way, at least for my kids, that they still need help in this department. There is a lot of information to ask for and a lot to receive - and they just don’t KNOW how to navigate yet.

School websites can usually give you most of the written information. Before a tour I would just go through the website very thoroughly and make a list of questions I still have outstanding. My daughter and I would study the websites together.

Swimkidsdad- thanks, I’m sure you are right. complaints always find their way to me.
Did the coach tell your S where he stood for recruiting? With so many kids coming through the schools for a handful of spots, how can they tell anyone who comes through on the first recruit weekend if they have a spot?

ahsmuoh–on our site it shows "request received"on the “detail” page and “pending” on the “colleges I am applying to” page for all of their apps. For the one school that DS has been accepted to already it says “initial documents sent” instead of pending. For DD’s NCAA “app” it says “final documents sent”–which was done last year and the NCAA has her transcript, again sent last year.

Dd came home, said the GC is out with a sick child. Ok, did you ask the secretary if she knew if your transcripts were sent or not. “Well, I just told her I needed to talk to the GC about college stuff” (insert banging head against brick wall here). I made DD call the GC secretary and ask—she looked in DD’s file and nothing has been filed as being sent yet (another headbanging insert here). Do you think if I had a Lima-a-Rita the alcohol will have worn off my breath by 6:00 when we are supposed to go help with the band stuff at the high school :D. It’s been 2 weeks, which is their “deadline” for sending transcripts according to them. IF they send them off Monday, they will arrive say Wednesday. Most of the schools have a 2 week, minimum, turnaround on acceptances so that is Oct 10th ish. Then we are supposed to forward our financial information to the schools so they can put together a pre-read for scholarships, etc., again with a 2 week turn-around, so now we are at October 24th ish and DD has to have her decision to the school she is attending, whatever one that might be, by November 1st. Sorry, just a little too close for me, especially with a mail holiday in there.

Ahsomuoh - the message in Naviance changed from “requested” to “sent” for S’13 a couple of days ago, so the message does change when the status changes. It may also depend on internal policies at your HS (LOR status, has the first part of the CA been submitted, etc.).

Congrats to all with acceptances in hand. Must be a weight off the shoulders.

Been off the thread for a while as not too much to report. S’13 is working his way through the app process and making steady progress. All non-CA applications have been submitted and the first part of the CA is complete. Supplements are in various stages of completion with EA schools done or nearly done.

Oh, for LOR, WE have to take care of sending those out too–WHY do we use the Common App and Naviance??? DD is trying to get in touch with the teacher that wrote her letter. He is teaching in another school in our district this year. He sent a copy of the letter and it is just WONDERFUL, but now we need to either get him the addressed envelopes or pick up the letters and mail them. I made her address the envelopes before she went off to visit her boyfriend!!

Thanks Steve and Dado for the naviance info - I guess I will wait until next week to see what ours turns to!

University of Pittsburgh is sending out their acceptances. DS received his today.
