Parents of the HS Class of 2013

I have nothing new to add, but I wanted to post now to say that I have already used up my allocation of puffs and I’m still reading threads from yesterday (on p. 1184). guess that’s what I get for taking a day off.

Received FAFSA pin verification yesterday, so it looks like a FAFSA and Football weekend for me.

As for Monday, I don’t have a real rooting interest, but FL borders on AL and local kids play on the team. So - Roll Tide (I guess).

OK - back to the future now.

Hee Hee the voodoo doll reminds me of a certain “big name” horse trainer that has voo doo dolls with the names of judges on them that she brings to each horse show. Sometimes I wonder if she has voodoo riders as well!!! Yes we have plenty of drama in our horse world as well…it can be very entertaining at times.
I think the road trip sounds ok if it is with several people. Sometimes I have to stop and think that in 6 months my D will be OOS and on her own. There comes a time that she has to start learning to do things on their own. Its scary, but a new reality in my world.
How many scholarship weekends do most kids go to? Our D has been invited to all the honors weekends ( so far 7 out of 7 ) but they are all OOS so we have not been able to go. As of right now we are attending 1 in a few weeks. Do you think it makes a big difference if you don’t go?
Oh and thanks for the puffs….must be why I slept so well!! I am feeling it…how many do I need to get a new green square???

I’m still on my 24 hour hiatus from puffing but it let me give Crittermom a puff??

Good morning! I slept till 9:00!!! I’ve had 2 cups of coffee and only me and DH and dogs are up. First thing I did this morning was get on here and read all the support, and wanted to say thanks…there are people on here who really get it. Big scheme of life…does the senior musical matter, no. But right now, it’s big in our life, and so many of you truly understand. I can’t talk chicken feet and voodoo with my regular friends.

Moonpie, I LOVE the haiku!! We printed it and hung it on the refrigerator.

We are going to see Les Mis today. I just don’t know about this. I am a self proclaimed Les Mis snob. I tell myself I’m going to see Colm as the Bishop and will plug my ears when Russell Crowe “sings.” :(

SteveMa Thanks I just got a new green square…feeling pretty special now!!!
moonpie…I get the same answer from some of my friends……“does it really matter in the big scheme of life?” ( they are not horsey people ) and my response is “You better believe it matters!!”
As far as chicken feet…nope! I can’t go there…being a bird owner…that is just too weird…

ugadog99 enjoy…we loved the Les Mis movie. Russell Crowe is not so bad… I just kept picturing him as a gladiator with minimal clothing…Works!!! :D

89wahoo - hope you’ve enjoyed using the song :D!

We didn’t have cable for the first few years so the kids were limited to PBS (but no Barney - just for my sake). No time limits, though. They both used to beg me to turn off the TV and read so I talked myself out of it whenever I felt guilty.

my3gr8 - I DO remember the original Steve – he was awesome! “…Mars is the red one, and Jupiter’s most wide…” I don’t suppose they can use that anymore. Poor Pluto! How exciting your mock trial is! Good luck to them. (Edit: congrats to them!)

LOL Haystack - I had a woman in our play group freak out when the kids built guns from legos. None of them had toy guns…

sahp2kids - I have had the same experience lately. Note to all: do not try to mentally plan a senior slideshow while driving :(. I couldn’t find the kleenex in the car! The song by Fun “I miss my mom and dad for this?”

sacchi - I know how you feel. I’m thinking about volunteering at the guidance office next year. One of my “keep in your heart” mom moments was when S13 was a rising freshman and we were driving a couple of kids to DQ after a baseball game. One of the kids was talking about jazz band and S13 said “if you like it, you should keep doing it and don’t take a year off because colleges will like that.” Now, I had not had this conversation with him so point blank, but at that point he already knew that he had no college fund and we would have to scrape to do whatever we did, so he started thinking about it. The other kid went home and talked about it and his mom later thanked me. Not that I did anything, but I sure was proud of S13 :).

Walker - good for you! Keep on 'em.

kelijake - Thanks for being so honest. It’s a relief that everyone here is a real person with real life and I don’t have to pretend to be cheery and bouncy when I’m not.

We are fighting losing the house because of a loan modification “process error” (read: despite our making the modified payment for 3 months longer than we were supposed to, the bank didn’t respond to my questions about some odd paperwork and then dumped me out of the program because I didn’t return it)… bless their hearts. So I am trying to live life and not constantly think about the mortgage – like touching a sore tooth with your tongue. Here’s to a better 2013!

The “detract from rep” feature isn’t enabled - I guess the CC Gods are worried that we’ll get into PUFF WARS :D.

Oh SteveMA now I’m crying again - “Puff” was the kids’ favorite song - I used to sing it to them when they were going to sleep.

my3r8 - big Packers fan here :D:):D:):D:)

Ohhh moonpie you get my first puff tomorrow! I love haiku!

Sorry to all in the drama drama. We have been so blessed with S13’s music program that I just burst with thankfulness.

ahsmuoh - it’s not quite the same but S13 drove himself to summer camp last summer, 3 1/2 hours. And he didn’t have anyone with him (the other girl was supposed to carpool but her parents decided they didn’t trust S13 to drive [!!!] How dare they? lol). Everything turned out fine. I was very stressed but had the same thought - little bits of growing up may be better than one big swoop.

Kat2013 - we got one of those too and S13 decided not to go. The two close ones to us he had conflicts. That being said, if the money might change, I’d do all of it. This was for a “need-based aid only” school.

congrats terinzak!

Can I make a phone company voodoo doll? Account still not fixed from New Year’s Eve snafu. Still can’t get Christmas phones. Over 16 hours on phone so far with customer service. I’m gonna go down and Walker them!!

And for the record - I would be nervous (but I would say ok - they gotta try it sometime) to let S’13 on the road for the 8 hour drive - even in FL. He’s a careful driver as are his friends, but have you seen the traffic on the Interstates in FL this time of year? No snow, but lot’s of sunburned folks from someplace else not knowing where they are going and making last second exits. And some want to drive on the left. And the closer you get to Disney or the beaches, the worse it gets. We are happy to have the visitors, but just sayin’.

confetti247 Good luck with the phone company. Just last week I spent 3 days on the phone with AT&T. We moved ( Our loan modification did not turn out so well ) Anyways had to cancel our U-verse and they never did so now our e-mails were all locked and the most frustrating thing was D lost all her e-mail folders containing any and all college e-mails. was so livid I could not help but yell at them…I never yell…Voodoo dolls would have been too good for them! Maybe we should start a voodoo thread just for fun!!!

Is Pluto a planet again? :)

Ahsmuoh - I probably would not - that’s a lot of driving, and too much distance for things to go wrong. I would let him go by plane, train, or greyhound though. :)

I got my drivers license in late November during a blizzard! I cringe at the driving my Mom allowed me to do (blizzard on NYE) - she was just glad that she no longer had to do it. It’s a different world now - too many distractions. I believe my son is a good driver - it’s everyone else on the road that worries me!

After reading all the drama drama, I’m thinking I’m going to keep my young D away from the stage!

Our2 – I wouldn’t draw conclusions about professional theater from what happens in high school. Really. :)

Moonpie – Your haiku is a thing of beauty. I think we started down the slippery slope (or slippery steps) away from Methodist Perfection when we headed to Walker’s basement.

Dadoftwo – lol – Probably the first-ever “Roll Tide (sort of)” in recorded history. And having heard my about my 85 year old Great Aunt’s hilarious – to her – 100 mph driving adventure when she went to Florida with the aged “Louise” to her “Thelma,” I’m with you on Florida Interstates. Terrifying!

Scholarship weekends, desserts, teas – I had no idea that applying to college was so much like pledging a sorority.

Teen driving – mine are both just learning. Decisions about how far & how long and where they drive are still in the future. In the meantime, though, we have to make decisions about allowing their friends to drive them places. Not a good substitute!

sacchi – of course we get excited when we get a chance to help. We work so hard at learning all this stuff, and it’s useful to us for such a limited time. Unless we were as smart as some on this thread and had five kids!

My3gr8 – When she was in kindergarten, D1 had playdates with a kid who LIVED IN STEVE’S building!

Confetti – you are the master of the comprehensive post. I bow to your mad skillz. I think Walker might need to pull out her chicken feet for your mortgage company, though. Really sorry about that.

Moonpie- Love the idea of the Voodoo doll

Long weekend visit- I think for me the most important thing would be did I trust the driver and what kind of weather there was. My DD is now 18 so I’d lean toward letting her go.

Nothing new going on around here. We are waiting to hear from a couple of schools DD applied to but mostly with DS16 in mind since DD13 got into her #1 EA. What I really want to see is the Financial Aid packages but that will still be a while.

Woke up to two green squares, thanks guys!! :)

Confetti - you are the master of group responses. I need some tutoring from you! So so sorry about the mortgage worries, how scary. Hope it gets sorted out soon.

Sorry so many of you are having drama issues. Neither one of my kids is the least bit talented in any form of arts (well, my younger one is a photographer, does that count?), so I am pretty ignorant about that world. Sounds like it can be very unpleasant! It’s a shame to have that kind of nonsense overshadow senior year.

re: road trip - I am curious about the answers because DS wants to do a real road trip with 3 friends this summer. It seems like a very “summer before college” thing to do, but I am definitely nervous about all the driving! Obviously weather is not an issue, but other drivers on the road are always my biggest fear.

anouilh - too funny, we said the exact same thing about confetti! I think she needs to teach a class. :D

speaking of which, you are a “she”, right confetti? Are we mostly moms on this thread (aside from students)? The Bama forum seems to have quite a few dads, but here I always assume pretty much everyone is female, not sure if that is true…

dadotwoboys, Haystack, and perazziman are men . . . I think I’m forgetting someone.

We live in snow country, our kids have to learn to drive in the snow. They all had one minor spinout while learning to drive–great life lesson :D. Scared the carp out of them enough to respect slippery roads. Driving 8 hours in bad weather, however, I wouldn’t even do that so I wouldn’t let them. We went to visit my folks for Christmas a few years ago. We had semi-bad weather the day before we were supposed to leave but sounded like the roads were ok so we went. Well, the roads in the OTHER states we traveled through were HORRIBLE. We at least knew enough of how to drive in that weather but there were spin outs everywhere, cars in the ditches, etc. Our kids are not ready to deal with that. If we come across roads like that on our trip though, they will drive on those roads for practice.

I just returned from leaving S2 at airport for his flight to Miami (connecting in Orlando). As I pull into the garage he texts that there is a “slight mechanical issue” on his plane. After an 8 hour delay on Christmas Day, he is understandably worried. He’s only got an hour layover in Orlando, but I’ve assured him that there are plenty of other flights if he misses his. He’s traveled alone many, many times, but I think this is his only connecting flight by himself. He can always try what his sister did in Munich when stranded at age 15 - cry. The ticket agent took pity (she was returning from a month in Kenya and must have looked afright!) and got her a hotel room and a flight out the next morning. But all in all, I’d rather have them flying than driving!

anyone beginning to think about Graduation Party? My DD has not wanted a birthday party since middle school and scoffed at the idea of a graduation party…but, I am wanting to do something…I was thinking of getting a tent in the back yard with BBQ and deserts…just let her invite whoever, whenever during some Sunday afternoon…? Does that sound dumb? Hokey? She turns 18 in April…but so far doesnt want a party for that…

Grad parties are the norm around here. They usually involve a tent the the backyard with food and inviting whomever so no, it doesn’t sound weird :D. We’ve thought about it. We have a niece graduating this year as well so we need to coordinate with them for date/time. We are trying to do them the same weekend for out of town people but so far it’s not working out very well. Our free weekends are not their free weekends. Haven’t gotten any farther than that tough.
