Parents of the HS class of 2015 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

We are down to D’s final three schools, actually we’ve been here for a while now.

To recap, D was accepted to seven schools. She immediately tossed out her safety and the two parent choices. I eliminated a fourth school for costs reasons. So that left three schools in contention: Cornell College in Iowa, UNC Asheville and Willamette in Salem, Oregon (why yes, the MD in my username is for Maryland).

She and I visited Willamette a few weeks ago (and learned how to pronounce the name correctly). She going to visit Cornell on her own this week. She’s already visited Asheville but wants to attend their admitted students day event the following week.

She liked Willamette but it wasn’t a slam dunk “yes, this is it!” visit. She loved Oregon. I loved Salem. This week, we’ll see how Cornell works out. I suspect Asheville may end up being the choice but I don’t know. I am envious of those whose child has a #1 choice.

@LadyArwyn- Congrats to your daughter! and just ignore the hostility- it always disappoints me that people just can’t be happy for other’s success.

SlackermomMD- wow- all far away choices. Keep us updated on the visits.

DS has it down to 2 choices at this point. Both very different schools and locations- Ole Miss and Butler. Trying to have him think through pros and cons of each but it’s not going to be an easy decision for him.

@LadyArwyn‌, I’m also finding out that people can be rather touchy this time of the year. The school obviously saw something in your daughter and they think she can succeed. Remember, schools never admit people they don’t think will graduate. What many people keep forgetting - at the high end as well as the low end, you are NOT your GPA (and/or test scores).

@illinoismom4‌, are you secretly rooting for Butler? (I would be)

@slackermommd- yes, I’m kind of hoping he chooses Butler, just because at not quite 4 hours away it’s so much closer to home. On the other hand, it’s 3x more expensive than Mississippi. Mississipi was also one of the few schools we visited where he could see himself going. He loved everything about it, but I’m also thinking it has something to do with being a big football school. We’re trying to convince him that one does not choose a school based on 6 or 7 home football games a year.

Deposit has been made to ithaca College!

By process of elimination (too cold, too far, etc.) D has decided on a college, and I think it’s a great choice. Yesterday, we crossed the last possible other one off the list when we visited a large state university where she was admitted, but ended up hating.

She will be going to Lynchburg College in Virginia, which offers good merit aid and scholarships for things like community service and arts achievements. It’s one of the small liberal arts colleges in the book Colleges That Change Lives. It’s about four hours from home.

D applied to nine schools and got into seven. She has a 3.1 UW, 3.3 W GPA, very low SAT scores because of some learning disabilities, and a great community service record.

What a long, meandering trip this has been! So glad it’s time to start the next chapter.

D results: 10 for 10; and it’s a 97% yes to USF. She wants to go to admitted days at other schools so she can “miss school” yes we are still working on maturing!
Her favorites have been very interesting but the sunshine and the department won her over. They have a 100% placement rate of employment post graduation in the long term administration program. I think having her academic dean tell her that she would be a “second mom” made this mom feel easier sending her 16 hours away by car and 2 1/2 hour by plane.
I want to say thank you for being a great support for this parent.

Congrats on all of the wonderful acceptances! It can be really disheartening being on this website at times, but this thread really shows the abilities of those without perfect stats.

Has anyone whose had a child apply to Wooster had back from them yet? I want to make my deposit as soon as possible and it’s quite difficult when your number 1 hasn’t replied back yet.

Anyways, current list. 26ACT/3.2(UW)3.7(W)

Waiting: College of Wooster

My daughter has not gotten a letter of acceptance from Wooster, but she did get a substantial music scholarship from them, which we are assuming means that she is accepted. She lost the link to the portal, so she hasn’t logged in, and she’s been super busy with the school musical so she hasn’t been home during office hours. That’s over now, so she’ll have to call them to get the link.

Hey folks!! Popping over from the other Parents of '15ers thread to let you know we’ve started compiling a list of where our DCs will be attending school next fall (for those who have made their final decisions at least  ). If you get a chance, please add your S/D’s decisions to the list there. We’ve only got a partial list so far, but already have covered a wide range of school sizes and types (LACs, flagships, mid-size, public, private, Ivy, selective, branch U’s, etc.). We’re all thrilled for our kids to find a great fit and find that place where they can be happy and grow!!! <:-P

Which thread? I see lots of them and the few I opened weren’t anything like that

@nj2011mom‌, try this link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/class-20xx-community/1086324-parents-of-the-hs-class-of-2015.html#latest. But if that does not work it is in the Forum, Class of 20XX section and is called “parents of the HS class of 2015”

Well I believe my DS has made a decision. In the end, he was accepted to three schools and was VERY excited about that. We visited the first 2, then he decided there was no reason to visit the last. Still not sure how I feel about that. :-?? In any case, DS will be attending Texas A&M Commerce as a Construction Engineering major!! He loved the campus feel and the program. I loved the support system they offer their students and the proximity to home. Overall, I think it is the best fit for my snowflake and that’s all that matters. I couldn’t be more proud of him and I’m glad that we are DONE!! The people on this thread and the other 2015 thread really helped me, help him. My sincere gratitude to you guys, seriously. I had no idea what a directional university was until I learned about it here, and that’s what helped form his list. Again, many thanks to you guys for the support!! >:D<

Similarly, my daughter has no intention of even visiting her second choice school. She had ONE school she really wanted, and everything else was a safety.

My son was accepted at SUNY Albany (Honors College), Bard, Sarah Lawrence, and Syracuse University. Visited Albany (for the first time) yesterday. Any thoughts? Given the limitation (HS GPA). Super bright, he has ADHD (hence the GPA). Any thoughts on Albany?

Vastly different schools, size, vibes, atmosphere. Where does he feel comfortable? Which is the best academic and financial “fit”. The city of Albany is not a vibrant city. If he needs any life coaching skills, study skills, tutoring, etc. which has a system in place that would be the most beneficial for him to access. Will he be able to focus in the large freshman lecture halls or does he do better in a smaller setting?

Good question. Financial packages (missing one) are identical for EFC believe it or not.

He wants to go to graduate/law school. What are the reputations of these - Albany, SU, Bard, Sarah Lawrence - when it comes to after college? I have definitely seen mixed reactions to all of these. Sarah Lawrence - some think it’s prestigious, others say you can’t get into graduate programs/it’s a useless degree (that last from the parent of a recent grad, but I’ve seen commentary along those lines); Bard - pretty much ditto though not enough info to know what a degree from there means; Albany I’ve seen trashed, and derided as a party school, SU party school and though a strong reputation in policy studies - I’ve also encountered cutting appraisals (probably because Princeton Review has it as #1 party school this year).

For all it’s worth, and maybe this means nothing anymore, SU and Albany have Phi Beta Kappa chapters - Bard and Sarah Lawrence do not.

hello my friends…D has made her final decision she will be attending University of South Florida. Results have been very good all yeses and all with money accept for Purdue.
I hope all are heading into graduation with smiles on your faces because we did it our kids will soon be highschool graduates =D>

Hello everyone!

Posting S2’s acceptance results. Weighted GPA 3.8. His school does not provide UW GPA so I guess it is around 3.3 -3.4. He applied to 8 schools, most of them are high acceptance schools with Division 1 sports.

Arizona State University (scholarship)
Miami University (no scholarship)
University of Arkansas (OOS tuition waiver)
University of Houston (in-state, small scholarship)
University of Kansas (scholarship)
University of Oklahoma (scholarship)
University of Texas-Austin (CAPPED :()
University of Tulsa (scholarship)

His final two top choices were OU vs. Tulsa. Tulsa offered him the most generous scholarships among all his schools and it costs just a little less to attend than OU. He chose OU because it offers his major while Tulsa does not. OU also has the big time sports that he likes. Cost wise and even with the scholarship he received, OU is not the lowest for us but since he is our last child to attend college H and I will make it work. OU is one of the smaller schools among Big 12 and it is only 3 hours away. This time last year we thought for sure S2 would go far away for college. Selfishly I am very glad he will not be that far away and don’t have to worry about travel logistics.
