Parents of the HS Class of 2015

My daughter decided to add one more school to her list, so she submitted an application to Shenandoah University last night. And her Canadian school has opened up their application, so she’s going to start that process before she heads back to school.

For those of you with kids STILL grinding out essays I thought I’d share this in case you (and your child) could use a laugh: <a href=“Oh no! Another giant goof! - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1714186-oh-no-another-giant-goof-p1.html</a></p>

OMG she might be on the cusp of done…two more essays she is working on right now for Jan 1 deadlines, and if she finishes those that’s it until the one, last school with a Jan 15 deadline.

Yay @OHMomof2‌ <:-P

On his last one due Thursday. A few more due later in the week and we are feverishly working on those, but the pressure for the moment is set to a dull simmer. Oy.

Best of luck to anyone in a similar boat waiting for essays to miraculously appear.

There will be at least one more week before yoga classes resume; feel free to enjoy dancing and refreshments on the lido deck in my absence.

I think my most useful role in this supp essay business has been to point out that she can recycle this or that essay that she already slaved over. Minor edits/additions and it seems 2-3 basic themes have arisen, been written about and can be pretty easily adapted. This was not obvious at first.

Spawn is still salving away. I asked just a short whole ago about progress “I’m waiting on comments from my CC”.

OK. Good thing she has the rolling admit in her back pocket & it’s a tolerable alternative just in case it all implodes on her.

We’re getting close to the end, right? I won’t do an entire year-end countdown, but it may be a good tie me to revisit one of the year’s best alt-pop songs.

three. more. still. to. finish. and. submit. sigh.

I let slip that the last two colleges have jan 15 deadlines so guess what’s not getting done yet? Argh.

I noticed that an app that D thinks is 1/1 is really 1/5, and have managed to keep from slipping, but it’s not easy. Sorry for your additional weeks of torture, @PhxRising‌.

I spent the morning trying to secure two of my son’s recommenders for a school not on the Common App. Neither showed as submitted with two days to go, so I started to contact teachers from my son’s past-homeschool teachers that I know personally that might be willing to throw out a last minute rec. Low and behold, I heard from the most important recommender who had been out of town and had thought he’d submitted but hadn’t. It took us about an hour or more to realize it was his college email that was not getting the invitation, and once he used his personal email, he got it and got the letter submitted. Whew!

He’s been so wonderfully awesome-so encouraging-and had no problems working with me rather than my son since it was early in the morning and my son was still sleeping! And then my son got an email later in the day from his other recommender saying she had mailed the rec last week. Whew again! Since these are both college profs, both PhDs, they probably will carry more weight than his homeschool co-op teachers.

I have to say that my son’s recommenders-these two, his cello teacher, and his boss from last summer-all believe in him and have been just incredible. We are very humbled by their help. Really, really thankful no matter the outcome. It’s been so good to see my son’s growth thanks to such support.

We have the opposite scenario. S was insisting his remaining three apps were due Jan 15th. I’ve pretty much stepped away from the application process but this time a nagging feeling told me double check the due dates. Sure enough two are due Jan 1 and one Jan 5th. Just as well since finals start on the 13th.

We are done. Last app due 1/15 has been submitted. He saved the hardest essay for last and it had to be original due to the question.

Two apps will never get completed, but it is past time to be done. And with 11 apos and 3 acceptances already his problem is likely to be too many choices.

Hapoy New Year to all!

My daughter’s last two applications are now submitted, although she has some supplemental material to send when she gets back to school - one of the schools doesn’t want an essay but a school paper 10-20 pages, which I’m pretty sure my daughter has never written anything that long. We’ll figure it out.

We are doing her prescreen this weekend for Shenandoah Conservatory, and then that application will be finished. All told, she’ll have applied to 10 schools.

@Irishmomof2, we had Shenandoah on our list for a long time when d was interested in costume design and then theatre. I always thought it was the type of school (at least on “paper”) that she would like.

D has 8 completed applications, has 3 confirmed audition dates, and has two more applications to finish this week. I think the due dates are actually around the 15th, but I’m really pushing for them to be done in the next couple days. She took the better part of 3 days to write her latest essay, but most of that time was spent stressing instead of writing. It was even a question she had to answer in previous applications, so I’m not sure why this one took so long. She has all of her completed essays in a Word doc, so she can go back and rehash whatever needs to be done for each new question. Her first audition is in 24 days, so she needs to get back to preparing for that. Her last audition will probably be the last weekend in Feb. or the first in March. It’s going to be a long winter.

Shenandoah wasn’t on her list until 2 weeks ago. I don’t know why it wasn’t, maybe their NPC gave us too high a number, but those calculators aren’t really accurate, IME.

@W2BeHome, I ponder at the insanity of northeastern schools having auditions in January and February. We are currently scheduled to take 2 trips across upstate NY and Pennsylvania in January and February, the two snowiest months of the year. We may have a 3rd as well, we’ll find out about that next week. And then we’ll have a trip to Canada in March! It’s a good thing I have just about 9 weeks of vacation in the bank.

Good luck to all racing against the deadline. I have memories of standing over kids’ shoulders as the clock approaches midnight. My ED kid is happily slaving away at XBOX now, but it would have been a nightmare otherwise.

And a Happy New Year to all.

My In-laws were visiting and regaled us with stories of their application process. Both of my in-laws are in their 80s and grew up in NYC.

My MIL came from a very “progressive” family, she was told she was going to college and “could become any kind of teacher she wanted”. Her parents felt very bad for another family in the apartment building. The boy went to this school no one had heard of, Harvard. They wanted to know why he wasn’t good enough to go City University because it was free.

My FIL had an older sister who suggested he go to Columbia. FIL did not want to make her feel bad so he didn’t tell her that Columbia was a high school. Once it was decided FIL would go away for school, his sister and her family were going on vacation to Canada, she said she would stop and visit two schools on the way and pick one for him. She visited Cornell and Syracuse. She reported back that everyone dressed in ties and jackets at Cornell and dressed likes slobs at Syracuse. Therefore, my FIL should go to Syracuse where he would fit in. End of college search, he went to Syracuse.

OMG she did it. All apps in except the one due 1/15. Hallelujah!
