Parents of the HS Class of 2015

@momsings, absolutely! Sometimes a phone call can clear up misinformation. At first I thought D would have to have a physical but we could not get one in before she went off (doing summer school there) so I called to check and that is what Student Health told me.

@DiffMom, we booked the physical as a catch-all (to get the doctor signature, take any missing shots, etc). Thus, if you are not missing anything, I think you can just get the doctor signature on the Cornell’s forms.

@diffmom, the school may not require a physical but the physician may require a wellness physical before filling out the immunization form. I just called to get the immunization form completed and I was told that my D would need a physicial before they could fill it out. She’s been getting an annual physical at school to participate in sports but not through her regular MD.

@4CookieMonster, that is exactly what I was going through before I called the Student Health Center. I was stressing out until I contacted Student Health. I think this going off to college list is more stressful than making the decision (at least for us).

At least last year for DD’14, there was a physical form that had to be filled out for Cornell. (DS’15 hasn’t printed out this year’s for me yet :stuck_out_tongue: ) Our Dr. doesn’t like to fill out the forms without a recent physical, but if yours will sign off without one, you’re fine. And as Diffmom found out, each school is different, but it’s good to check.

@W2BeHome - I would double check about that FSU Scholarship being added to what she already has. We were told that the music scholarship for out of state students would be overridden by the OOS waiver my D received and NOT added on. That is one of the reasons D did not choose FSU.

@CollegeDadofTwo - thanks for the heads up. I spoke to someone in music admissions and sorted out the differences in the various scholarships and waivers. The OOS tuition waiver my daughter received is academic and comes from the university (it did not show up on the music school scholarship offer form, but on the myFSU financial aid page). The music scholarship she received is talent-based. The music school does also offer OOS tuition waivers (identified as OWS on the music scholarship form. It is those OWS amounts that can not be paired with OOS tuition waivers from the university.

I had a big (like 18" x 18" x 48") duffel bag that I used for most of my clothes to and from school. The problem is if your child believes in ironing or has very nice clothes. In that case, I say a series of garment bags for some things would be necessary (garment bags run the gamut from shabby to quite protective and shape-retaining, from what I understand).

The only real issues with me moving in and out of my dorm were the fridge (I had a HUGE one for a dorm, at least 3’ high and 2’ square) and the other appliances (hot pot, toaster oven). Of course, when I had a “roommate”, we did have to try to keep our stuff separate, he I think used several smaller duffel bags and an airline bag (with a shoulder strap).

We both lived close enough to exchange clothes during fall and spring break at home, so didn’t have to take the whole 9 yards. I don’t know how much UPS or USPS ground is, but shipping clothing back and forth (your DC pre-packing winter/spring clothes for you to send later maybe?) might be an option for those who live further away.

^^That just reminded me of my former business partner who used to Fedex his dirty shirts, socks, and underwear home for his wife to wash when we were on extended business trips.

The school D is going to requires a specific fridge/microwave combo that you rent through the school if you want a fridge in the room. They do not allow any other appliances period. I guess that she and her roommate will be renting.

@Elliemom, that is disgusting!

mtrosemom, I would be A-OK if my D’s school did that. Less to haul.

@Elliemom, I’m picturing what would happen if I tried that with H! HAHAHAHA.

Oh wow, I never knew that some schools require you to rent through the school. That’s a bummer. We got my son his own mini fridge at Christmas to keep insulin and juice boxes in. We assume it will go with him to whatever school he goes to. I hope we didn’t waste our money.

@mtrosemom, THAT is disgusting. #1, rent? That is GRODY to the max…

As for “not allowing appliances”, that is so ridiculous - no hair dryer? No humidifier? No fan? No toaster?

I could see circumstances where students would have to file an appeal to allow for an alarm clock - isn’t that an appliance?

@rhandco, minor appliances, like hair dryers and clocks are allowed. Major ones that draw heavily on power and are plugged in all of the time are restricted.

I know that one school prohibits microwaves, hot plates, coffee makers, and toasters.

Oh, and water beds. Yep, they listed that.

@suzy100 I bet there is a funny story behind why they had to list waterbeds.

I think every school we looked at in NC provided fridge and microwaves.

My S’s school allows microwaves (under 1,000 watts), refrigerators no larger than 6 cubic feet, and fans.

Does not allow toasters, toaster ovens, portable space heaters, air conditioners, appliances WITHOUT automatic shutoffs (like George Foreman grills and rice cookers).

No mention of coffee makers. I guess they would be Ok if they have an automatic shutoff.

Someone asked where you store suitcases…you store them under the bed. If you have more than one suitcase, stack them inside each other if possible. Put little used items in there as well.
