Parents of the HS Class of 2015

Ah, I did not know all that. My husband is not a fan of the rental fee, either. We shall see. I did buy a sturdy hand truck at an estate sale months ago, and I’m more excited about that thing than almost anything else.

Count us as another family buying the bed bug mattress protector thingy. I shudder at the thought of those little critters. @-)

Frosh move-in is typically earlier, at the beginning of an orientation period. In my experience with the two siiblings’ schools, there are crews of upperclassmen, usually decked out in matching school t-shirts who help with the lugging and schlepping–with varying enthusiasm. This is crucial in urban settings where you might be limited to 15-minutes.

After the first move-in, you’re on your own, although it’s more leisurely spread out over a couple of days. New students and parents are often racing to get to a scheduled event such as a convocation.

My son will be moving in a week early for marching band camp so there probably won’t be anyone to help but no crowds either.

@mdcmom , thank you for the warning about health check ups… I had been thinking of scheduling that but did not realize about “yearly” rule!

The “yearly” rule is our health insurance rule…they only cover one physical every 12 months. And since DS had to have one for camp last year, timing this year is a little tricky!

On another topic, DD’s bed at Cornell is already sealed in anti-bedbug plastic. She seems to sleep OK on it but it doesn’t look comfy to me.

Also, Cornell restricts the size of the fridge but you can bring your own as long as it meets guidelines. You can also rent a combo microwave/fridge from a local agency. You are not allowed to bring waterbeds or hot tubs. Seriously.

rhandco, if there is a change in circumstances, you should absolutely file an appeal. One of the schools that accepted my son won’t allow students to appeal until summer, which I think it’s nuts, but that’s their policy. It’s still in time to pay for fall fees, I guess in their mind.

I have been filing plenty of appeals at various schools to which my son was admitted since our income is down about 8K this year. Most schools have been good about coming back with a new amount. A few didn’t get back to us yet. One I had to call to get the updated amount. The amounts varied. The most he got from one school was $2600 more (I think all in scholarships); one gave only $500 more (grant).

The Eagle has landed - thanks to our college counselor who said he would not let him off that chair until he made a decision! S does not want to announce until May 1st so I will respect that decision and post on that date here as well.

I looked at D’s card to me - she’s away on a school trip and left the card with her college decision with instructions not to look until Friday.

She has chosen Cornell College! I love this choice. I think the One Course at a Time suits her learning style. The clincher for her, I think, was how genuinely nice everyone connected with the school is - she liked the kids on the FB page, everyone she called with questions or rescheduling had been understanding, kind and supportive.

(I updated google docs)

Excellent news, and a wonderful choice!

We needed to rent the dorm fridge micro combo really it’s not that crazy when you think about what you are spending. The school was OK with refrigerators if you met a certain size but I think it was the microwave that caused the need to rent.

We have never had a bed bug issue here-when he comes home the bedding goes directly into the wash. The mattress pad we remove from the bed and toss in the trash here. It seems extremely rude to leave it on the mattress for the school to toss. We found the best thing is a thick mattress cushion or whatever you call them is best as those mattresses are not the best. A tip-to save some $$$ you can buy a king size one and cut it in half! I didn’t do that as I had already brought one and was told after the fact!

@SlackerMomMD - LOL! I initially thought you meant her instructions meant not to open until Friday, May 1st so I thought you peeked early! I think S doesn’t want to announce it because he doesn’t want anyone arguing him out of his choice now that he’s made it - sort of like not announcing baby names until the baby arrives so you don’t hear the criticisms I guess. It’s killing me not to tell my closest friends who have been on this journey with me but I will respect his request. Now H, on the other hand, is terrible at keeping secrets…

Mattress pads - is that the eggshell type thingies?
Also, because I am too lazy to look it up, would full size sheets fit on twin xl beds or would they be short? Her current sheets are full - we’d have to buy twin xl ones.

Yes that is what I mean the eggshell although I think this one is flat-I would link it but I do not know if that is allowed on here.

I don’t think a full sheet would fit the bed but not sure about the length-I buy cheap ones and toss them after the year that stuff never comes home-I also buy a couple of cheap fast drying towels that get tossed as well.

The good aspect of renting is you don’t have to figure out what to do with it over the summer.

@scholarme, the kind of pad we got is a memory foam-type dealio. It’s nice and squishy. Even if the dorm mattresses are not twin xl, the twin xl sheets will still be needed to cover the mattress cover and mattress topper.

D’s college only allows microwaves in the room if they are part of the fridge/microwave combo that can only be rented. And it has to be picked up from a central location on campus. Kind of annoying. But we’ll probably do it.

Full sized sheets will not fit a twin XL. The’ll be too short. The length of the twin XL=Queen. My S has a full XL at home at Queen sheets fit his odd-sized mattress. I did get a mattress cover through Amazon. We’ll probably throw it out and get a new one for year 2. However, the memory foam topper is pretty pricey, so we may keep that for reuse as long as she is in school housing (all twin XL beds in school housing).

She tried memory foam topper - doesn’t like it (makes her hot). Are eggshell types cooler?
Thanks for the tip on queen sheets - we might have spares she could bring.

@SlackerMomMD - a young man I know is graduating for Cornell College, and I think he absolute agrees that it was a college experience that changed his life - in a good way!
