@Wrestlersmom - 2nd’ing the Hy-vee - we were very impressed with that store when we visited. The deli doubles as a lunch buffet - and was the food GOOD! They also had a salad bar and other hot items so if you DS is ever in the mood for other food, that is definitely a place to stop - and he can pick up groceries while he’s there!
My daughter doesn’t even have a car of her own at home so there would be no car for her to take to school. Lucky for her, I don’t think it’s common for students to have cars on campus.
We are allowing DS to have a car. For us, it’s a convenience for him to be able to drive himself back and forth at breaks, and the parking fee is not outrageous.
@wrestlersmom- Definitely check out the Hy-vee,; I don’t think it’s too far from campus.
@Joe2015 - The Admissions person who called us said that they were reaching out again because the representatives from the music department asked if they could do anything else to make it more affordable.
It didn’t sit well with my daughter, though. She said she feels bad enough saying no to the people she has a relationship with, now that she’s committed she’s good.
Thanks @Irishmomof2 . I thought once May 1st is gone, that’s it! Received an email for Oklahoma today…it’s not too late…
S will not be having a car, as parking is hard to find in Ann Arbor. He will only be about an hour and 15 minutes from home, so getting him back and forth if he wants to is not an issue.
About the car insurance, I have heard, though I have not checked into it, that if dear teenage driver does not go to school more than 90 miles from home then you do not get the discount! I am really hoping that is not true, or that is varies from one insurance company to another. I would love to lower our insurance bill for a few months before S18 starts driving!
No car for D1. Besides the fact that first years are required to live in on-grounds housing and cannot have cars on grounds, she doesn’t have her driver’s license yet. I don’t think she even likes learning to drive; I know she has a learner’s permit but I’ve never even seen her try to drive.
^the magic number is 100 miles and I checked a half dozen insurance companies when D’12 was moving to campus. :-w But as a girl, the savings weren’t that big a deal. Now, for S’15, probably would be more, but its worth having him close to home. :x
There are no more rules at this point. If an accepted student does not show up at a school, there is absolutely nothing a school can do. The issue is always whether they want to go elsewhere and if they can actually go there.
The waitlists clear in some places while there is some summer melt of matriculated students at other schools. It is quite common. Essentially those trying to entice a student are asking the students to be summer melt.
We just received a message from the ID department. They are mailing her ID. Needed it early because her orientation is after SS starts. It’s sinking in…She’ll soon be out of the house. Wah!
For those whose students are taking a gap year, what are your gap year plans?
My S is taking a gap year and is looking for an engineering internship. He’s hoping to finish a few ‘projects’ and take a class at the local CC just to remind him what school is like. Personally, I don’t want him doing anything until September, but I guess you have to do what you have to do. If something comes through ahead of time, he’ll have to do it. I just don’t know how common these jobs are.
I know it’s AP season, but in honor of senioritis (which I remind DC#2 is still not a recognized medical condition), I will nonetheless start you off today with a catchy little tune from Cloud Nothings that could serve as the current generation slacker national anthem. And we’ll follow that up with a college rock classic from a band that you might remember too after hearing the first song.

D does not have driver’s license yet. I think her school would be too far anyway for a teen driver (5 hours) , plus it’s in a city where public transpo is better than driving. Her school id will give her free public city bus rides.
I am hoping she gets her license this summer.
@SomeOldGuy - senioritis is in full swing at casa de wrestler! I received a text message yesterday pleading his case for an early dismissal because there was a sub in his last period class! I confess. I caved!
Here’s to hoping AP Calc BC goes well today! He worked last night and had to be to school 2 hours earlier than normal for the test. His day started out with a double shot of espresso while he finished up his project tha was due. Oh boy!
^Same here. S’15 was off at 7:00 AM for a pretest study group session. He has AP Lit test tomorrow, but he said; “by far and away, this calc test concerned him the most.” :-S
Good luck all!!
@scholarme It is also our goal for DS to get his license over the summer.
DS1 called last night to tell us his co-op has asked him to stay over the summer, his end date was June 30. Its nice to know he is wanted, but a hard decision. I think he would like to extend 1 month thru July, but everything is complicated by DH health issues (hoping for more clarity in the next few weeks) and finding housing in Boston for just 1 month that doesn’t cost more then he makes.
Teachers are feeding the AP kids breakfast & lunch today, I’ve heard.
I think the Calc teacher’s hobby is baking, so they’ll get some yummy treats.
@mom24boys prayers for your H’s health.
You may want to check with the local colleges on housing. My older kid is renting a dorm room as his summer housing in NYC, and I’d guess some places in Boston may have similar arrangements available.
Finding housing in Boston is not the problem, so much as finding affordable (okay not outrageous) housing with parking for only one month. He will check with some colleges and sublets, but part of me just wants him home. It was very nice that they asked him to stay, it makes him more confident that he is doing a good job.
If he turns them down and explains he wants to come home to spend time with his younger brother before he leaves for college and his sick Dad, I am sure they will not hold it against him.
