My D found her roomates through the facebook group. It seems this is one application of facebook that is still cool.
Fruit snacks end up in my cart, too!
21 Year old son, who doesn’t live at home anymore, recently commented on the dinosaurs I stenciled on his bedroom walls that are still there. I don’t have the heart to paint over them.
I stenciled them towards the end of my pregnancy (with D). It took about a week as I wasn’t moving too fast at that point. As soon as I finished (I mean, within minutes) my son said, “OK, next time, could you do lions and tigers and giraffes.” I stenciled those on the walls of D’s room.
All these quotes from “girl books”, as my boys would call them! We read those once and once only. But this one:
“Early in the morning, the farmer feeds and milks his cows”. Aaaarrrgghhhhhh! I can STILL recite the entire book. We read in every night for years to S1.
Baby Beluga to S2.
And… something or other to S3, but since he is S3, unfortunately, I don’t remember much of his childhood. And I sure as heck don’t have any photos.
@Barfly lol my wife has asked to see my childhood photos. I told her there pretty much aren’t any. Parents were too busy trying to keep us from breaking our necks, and feeding us, etc. No time to take pictures!
Tonight is her final concert as a high school student. She plans to try out for her university’s wind ensemble for non music majors, but it’s not the same as the high school band experience. Driving three hours (one way, plus a ferry) for five or six concerts a year - um, no. Maybe one special concert each year.
Baby Beluga in the deep blue sea
Swim so wild and swim so free
The heaven above and the sea below
See the little white whale on the go…
I loved Raffi and all his silliness!! Thanks for the reminder @Barfly!!
Did anyone else have the Discovery Toys tape? The beginning sounds song is STILL stuck in my head. Apple, Apple, ah, ah, ah… Baby, baby, b, b, b. Say what you will, as annoying as it was, the kids knew their initial sounds by preschool.
Nighty Night, Nighty Night, I will not go nighty night
I’ll catch the moon and hold on tight
And if the moon will go with me
We’ll catch some stars down in the sea
Then up again go bear and I
Watch us now, we can fly
And like a lantern on a string
The moon shines down on everything…
I’ve enjoyed reading your thread this year and following the journey of the Class of 2015. I’m going to stop now because y’all are making me cry too much. And I have an overwhelming urge to crawl in bed with D and start reading bedtime stories to her. She will be certain I’ve lost it. Lol.
We listened to Peter, Paul and Mommy a lot. We also had a tape of some songs that ostensibly taught French, which is how she learned the days of the week - both my kids speak/read French very well, although not quite fluently.
Did any of you ever listen to Veggie Tunes in the car? Just yesterday, S3 yelled from the bathroom “Did anyone see my hairbrush”, and S2 broke into a roaring rendition of “Oh, where … is my hairbrush? Oh, where… is my hairbrush? Oh where oh where oh where oh where oh where…… Is my hairbrush?”
But my favorite and most often sung Veggie Tune was “I’m busy, busy, dreadfully busy! You’ve no idea what I have to do! Busy, busy, frightfully busy. Much much too busy for YOU!” Oh how I loved that song! It was like my anthem! Many revised versions have been sung in this home over the years!
Another method of not crying at (my eldest’s Columbia University Masters Convocation)…sit in the back of a cathedral with bad acoustics and so far away you cannot see or hear anything (we were just happy to get in because of a ticket mixup because Columbia has Convocations and Commencements and evidently they are different)
We’re almost at a holiday weekend here, and I’ll help you get ready with this particularly high-energy version of the official theme song of certain Midwestern expats.

I was at my CAP meeting last night and making plans with the cadet aerospace officer for a rocketry program. Both of us are leaving in fall for college (though he’s only going an hour or so away.) It was a strange feeling to be planning things for summer, knowing that the last activity date we were planning would likely be our last CAP activity for a long time. (Actually the last date we planned I will miss because it’s the day before my classes start.) I’m not usually one to get choked up over things, but I’m really going to miss my friends and activities here. It’s going to be strange to live without CAP - I’ve gotten so used to it.
When I was sick, my mother used to make toast and tea, but always cut the toast in tiny triangles. She never cut it that way except when we were sick. I have no idea why that was. But of course when my kids were sick, I did the same thing. My 20 year old was feeling crummy last night and asked for toast triangles, and my heart just melted. I hope I have grandkids some day who feel better when their toast is cut in tiny triangles.
Raffi, Peter Paul & Mommy, & Tom Chapin songs all bring me back. Madeline was the favorite here (yes, I know it by heart), with Goodnight Moon, Guess How Much I Love You, and the Boynton board books not far behind. And Fox in Socks and the like. I agree with everyone else here who hates the creepy I’ll Love You Forever book… we have a copy but only because it was a gift from a good friend.
