D’s college included a HIPAA form with the medical information packet. Two HIPAA forms actually, one to release earlier records to student health in case they need them, and one to release student health records to the parents.
D remains completely uninterested in buying stuff for her room. With regard to sheets, we already have a set of twin XL sheets purchased for camp a few years ago. She doesn’t much care what kind of comforter she has, she doesn’t care what towels she has, she’s not thinking about closet organizing systems. She did perk up a bit at the idea of string lights, and mentioned that a friend of hers found some yellow duckie lights at Cost Plus. Otherwise, apparently she’s ready to sleep in a barn.
My daughter’s college sent a “package deal” order form home that provides big discounts if you buy the big package - bedding, towels, hamper, rug, etc. I was rather disgusted when I saw the stuff we already purchased (and washed, so we can’t return it) and already cost far more than the package deal that includes twice as much stuff.
The only upside so far is that the dorm package kits only offer about 25 color/pattern options, which means half the dorms will look pretty much the same, and hers will be different.
She has a twin XL bed at home (all of my kids are very tall, so it made sense) but it seemed too much effort to keep moving her bedding from home to dorm for every school break.
We did most of our shopping except for toiletries. The other day we received a brochure from the school for carpeting. We were planning to get her a rug and told her to discuss this with her roommate. She is busy making collages to hang up. She has close to 100 pictures! 18 more days until we go. :-SS
I’m a little envious of those of you who are receiving these offers of package deals and carpeting. D’s school is probably way too small (less than 1000 students total) to be able to offer things like that. They didn’t even send out the roommate survey until last week. Who knows when D will actually receive her room assignment.
" I knew one anthropology professor who has a policy of dropping a student one letter grade if a parent called the professor to inquire about grades, projects, or the student’s attendance."
I’ll have to remember that.
But honestly, we try to advise my son, and ask him for permission for access to his medical records and he has given it. It’s too much of a hassle for him to track, and he knows that if he messes up, the situation could be dire.
And I did all the FA related stuff, so he had better give me access to it.
My take is if he wants to be free and clear of us, move out and go to a community college and run your own life. The only thing we have put our foot down for is that he had 8 hours straight of classes scheduled, and I have insisted that is insane and he dropped the offending class. He was supposed to take 4 classes but was pushed into 5, but the 5th was not even a class he wanted. I figure if they are bullying him, I have a stronger position of negotiation.
I know people who were thrown out of their home when they went to college, for no cause other than turning 18. One set of parents was happy to pay but otherwise wanted nothing to do with the child; she had to live at the sorority house every summer because she had nowhere to live otherwise.
Aug. 16. I feel like we’re the earliest one. Freshmen move in four days before classes start on Aug. 20 and have more orientation-like activities in small groups.
The official move-in date is August 19, but my D is moving in August 16 - she signed up for a transition program, which allows her to move in, meet her teachers, and establish a relationship with a student mentor in her program. She felt anxious about moving in with a huge crowd, so this way she can be settled before the deluge comes.
We are driving down on the 13th. Move in is the 14th. They have a book discussion on the 17th. Classes begin the 18th. Today she received an email stating they will pay her $300-500 per class if she will post her notes… Hmm…
D2 move-in date is 8/19. K Week is 21-29 Aug. In between now and then we’re moving D1 down to Cincinnati for grad school. Looking forward to early September and having a chance to breathe again. :!!
