Sure, call - why not?
Great news @STEMFamily .
Wow sorry to hear that your husband is losing his job @wrights1994. How stressful for your family. I too don’t know how financial aid would be affected, but I agree that a call to the FA office would certainly be wise. Hope that if he wants another job that he is able to find one soon.
One of my kids had finaid changed from first to second semester.
I agree that you should call the FA office wrights. You have nothing to lose and only the potential of gain/help. Good luck and sorry about your H’s job.
still waiting to see what will happen. We should know tomorrow at the latest. thanks for the good wishes. I will call them next week if they do let him go!
@wrights1994 sending good thoughts to you and your DH. About the financial aid and severance, don’t some schools make the finaid decision based on a full year of attendance while others are on a semestral basis? I hope yours is the latter.
@STEMFamily, sending healing thoughs for the hand and hopefully you can come to a good outcome with the W or whatever, I know some schools can note that a W is for medical reasons.
@wrights1994 - sorry to hear about your husband’s job. I would call the school no matter if FA is awarded on an annual or semester basis. It certainly does no harm in calling and asking - there is no downside. Good luck.
When my job ended I asked the schools and both said that after the job ended (I’d asked a few weeks before it actually ended) to fill out the change of circumstances form and submit the documents requested like final paystub, tax return from the prior year or tax transcript (yes, even with verification the year before), list of any vacation pay, severance, settlements, unemployment insurance payments, etc. They then can adjust your EFC or give other money they may have (alum award, SEOG if they still have it). Both schools asked for the same info, one public, one private.
Hey everybody, checking in…
I retook the first calc III exam 2 times, got a 53 the 2nd time, and on my 3rd attempt, I got a 92! Just got my score back today. I’ve also taken the first attempt of the 2nd test, which I’m still waiting for the score on but I think it went decently. I’m digging through those piles of notes and camping out at the teacher’s office for a few hours at least 2-3 times a week so that I understand it. I am on the fence about taking this teacher - he’s the nicest guy in the world, but with what I have on my plate for next semester, I think I’d better hedge my bets and go for someone a little more paced. November is going to insane - we still have the last half of the class to get through, and are moving along more rapidly now. I still have an A in my other classes, and I’m certainly burning the midnight oil to keep it that way.
Socially things are still going well. I’ve got lots of friends and a guy that I’m pretty certain likes me; though he hasn’t come right out and said it, there’s been some reasonably obvious clues. Rocket club is also great!
I’m going to get to fly home for Christmas break - it’ll my first time on a commercial airliner, but it’s a nonstop flight, so I should be fine.
He still has a job!!! Thanks for the good wishes
@albert69 … Great to hear the Calc torture is getting a little better You’re doing the smart thing and asking for help, going to office hours, etc. SO MANY kids don’t want to ask for help until the ship has taken on too much water, so it’s very smart and very mature of you to handle it this way. It’s always a little weird when you go home for the first time after starting college. You’ve gotten a little taste of independence, so it’ll be interesting to see how your “old” routine fits now. %-(
@wrights1994 … Wonderful news!! That has to be a load off of your mind. #:-S Now if the Wolverines can just get past those pesky Gophers this weekend…
Thanks, @Wolverine86. As long as my bed is clear, I think I will be more than happy and content to be home.
@wrights1994 Such great news! So happy for you and your family. I’m sure that was a stressful few days.
@albert69 I would also urge you to analyze why you got a 53 on the first attempt and ta 93 on the third attempt.
Did you not see the material presented?
Did you not read the chapter?
Did you not practice those problems?
Did you not practice a variety of those problems?
Did you not understand how the theory worked?
Whatever it is, try to understand and apply that to the next test.
I vaguely remember albert69 saying that everyone does worse on the second attempt (harder version?) so she wasn’t too surprised by that. I don’t know how these multi-attempt exams work though. ("Back in my day we had to take the first grade and be happy with it, durn it! )
@bopper I started really studying the notes and asking for help between the 2nd test and the 3rd one. I also asked more questions about what was going to be on the test.
@mdcmom The 2nd attempt is usually the hardest, yes. This teacher’s methods are a tad eccentric, I’ll admit. Interesting though.
Ahhh… one of my old friends (we go way back, our first glider encampments… 3 years of them that we both went to) who goes to school up at K-State Salina was in Wichita, so he picked me up and we went for lunch. It was so much fun. Brought back so many precious memories. This guy’s like my brother, he’s so awesome. We talked about airplanes, flying, told more edgy jokes than I can count… just great.
Lucky you got to retake it. I have kids in middle school who were never given a second chance…
Be careful, like your brother could end up living with you like your brother did
@rhandco Um… I don’t quite get the brother joke, sorry. I don’t have any brothers.
My daughter said she had her first experience with a “creeper.” She was making an emergency nighttime run from her dorm to the grocery store (a few blocks off-campus) for some female supplies when she passed a guy going the other way, who gave her a strange look. A minute later she heard something behind her, and realized he had turned around and was following her. She made a beeline for a well-lit street corner where there were a bunch of other students, then headed into the store. She didn’t see him again after that.
She said that next time she’s going to try to find someone to walk with her.
@LadyArwyn … Not sure if UW specifically has the program, but I know many universities have students on standby every night that will escort other students anywhere they need to go (within reason) if they’re solo. It’s usually to get them from late night sessions at the library back to their dorm etc, but I would think something like her trip so close to campus would probably fit the bill as well.
