“at school” vs. “at a voluntary program” is entirely different. Schools are allowed to track my children.
She has never checked a box about her race and ethnicity at school in a voluntary program. Standardized tests are different.
Really they should be asking about socioeconomic status as that is a more important indicator of success in school, as well as parents’ education level.
But for some reason, it is considered to be in the students’ best interest to ask their race and ethnicity, yet often you can’t ask them how much money their parents make or if they have two parents at home or if their parents went to college.
I don’t see the big deal. It was an optional question and the kid skipped it. Probably the school wants to get an idea of who is doing the program beyond “girls”.
We’ve seen D15 once since school started. We haven’t seen D14. Last year D14 went to Thanksgiving at a relative’s house and we didn’t see her until winter break.
I haven’t been home yet and won’t be until December. The semester has honestly gone by a lot faster than I thought it would… when I’m living deadline to deadline I guess it seems that way. And when I’m having fun! My mom sometimes says funny things like it’s strange for me to be so far away, and she misses me, but then she realizes that I’d could have stayed home and gone to UNM… and she is glad that I’m so far away.
Only seen sweet daughter on Skype and will have to wait until December 19 when she flies here for Christmas. She is going to my Mom’s for Thanksgiving, a first for her, a holiday at her grandparent’s (well, except for July 4). Can hardly wait to see her in the flesh!
I saw D for the first time since drop-off at family weekend this past weekend. It was really cool to meet her friends, sit in on one of her classes, eat with her, just hang out. She’ll be home before long for Thanksgiving too, then a month for winter break. I’m feeling really good about her choice of school, her work, everything.
Saw D over Columbus Day weekend in October. which was almost 8 weeks post drop-off. It’s a 7+ hour drive one way so originally we weren’t going to see her until Turkey Day. But she really missed S17 and D19 so we planned a trip. The day off of school for the siblings allowed us to stay the whole weekend and come home on Monday.
She is settling in nicely and having a great time. Home for about 3-1/2 days for Thanksgiving, back for about 8 days for the end of semester and exams and then home for almost 6 weeks for Christmas. Can’t wait!
We went to visit DS for parent’s weekend, but he has not come home. I’m very happy they have a whole week off at Thanksgiving. He will be home in 10 days!
One thing that should have been obvious a year ago but now is very obvious is that 3 hours each way = 6 hours of driving.
But with the stabbings in Penn Station, we’ll be picking him up for Thanksgiving. He will be home again and now is asking to see his friends over Thanksgiving and thinks he can see grandparents and see friends. I said you should plan to see your friends on the Friday or Saturday, not Thursday.
We won’t see S until Christmas. He’s going to stay at school over Thanksgiving to study for final exams…he also doesn’t like to fly very much so he didn’t want to have to make the long trip twice in three weeks. Can’t wait to see him!!!
We saw D during Parents Weekend in October. She won’t be home for Thanksgiving. Instead, she’ll be getting together with friends and cooking a traditional Thanksgiving feast with them. She asked her uncle (the family chef) for his recipes and got some.
I wish it were just a 3 hour drive. When we dropped off her stuff, it was a 14,15 hour drive which we did over two days or a four hour flight and 2 1/2 hour drive. I’m strongly encouraging my friends to gently guide their kids to schools within a 5 hour drive.
I’m lurking here, from Parents of '16, but -
We’re in the upper Midwest. At one point, D was talking about some schools near east coast, or U of Montana. Even the east coast is close to a 16 hour drive or more.
We are secretly relieved that she’s decided to stay within 8 hours drive of home. Whew.
D is 4 hours away and I’ve already done that round trip in a day. It’s not too bad, and a nice way to spend some “slow time” with her. She came home for fall break and she’ll be home again for Thanksgiving so I’ll be doing that round trip at least once. Hoping she can catch a ride with someone back to school. I am also grateful that she’s within a reasonable driving distance, although she did apply to some schools much farther away.
S is 8-9 hours away but we are driving there the day before Thanksgiving. Since he is in the marching band, he has to be there for a game on Saturday. We are also flying older D in from her school so at least we will all be together for a couple of days.
Well, I’m in a bit of a pickle now with the engineering graphics project. I can’t bring myself to use pirated software, but I may not learn much because of that. The main guy that has the designs is using the pirated software, along with one other guy (and possibly two now.) I don’t want to tell on them, because they could get into a lot of trouble. I admit that the the thought has crossed my mind though. But I’ve heard stories about engineers losing their jobs if people find out that they’ve pirated software. It bothers me because it’s illegal, so I don’t want to get it on my computer, so I’ll have to go to the lab to do stuff. But the WSU computers recognize that their files are from pirated software. One of the guys opened his file on the lab computer and a little message came up saying that it was from illegal software or something. Now that I’ve heard that I don’t even want to view their files on a lab computer, but that’s what I’d need to do to learn about the project and really learn the software, but what may end up happening is that the guys with the software will just end up doing all the CATIA sketches. So I’m sort of stuck, I can’t make drawings on my own without using CATIA, and I don’t want to use their files. I suppose I could go to the lab and try to start from scratch, but since they now have a bunch of the parts of already made in CATIA and they’re better at using it than I am, there wouldn’t be much point.
There is a free student version, but one guy tried to get it and wasn’t able to. I assumed that if it was hard to get, none of us would get the software, so we’d all just have to do it on the lab computers. Naive me didn’t realize that they’d just pirate the software. The one that got it first offered to put it on my computer, but I said no. Not sure what I should do…
@rhandco - you are so right! Funny how I kept thinking D15 is only 1.5hr away but that is 3 round trip! Not complaining, I know it isn’t far but she makes very little effort to “carpool” with others when she comes home, she doesn’t really look at how it takes a chunk out of my day to “pop down” and get her. Her school has a non stop bus to our town on main holidays since we have the largest airport in the area, and I joked that she could take that home for Thanksgiving break - no response from her
