What do you guys have that you need to store? I can’t think of anything that needs to be put in storage.
D is across country, so her bedding, towels, furniture she bought, desk stuff, books, bike, and probably her winter clothes will go into storage near her school. She is going straight from school to a 2 month internship that she will be flying to, so she will be limited in what she can bring with her for the summer.
D is 1000 miles away from home. So, she needs to store, well, everything: bike, refrigerator, shelving, trunk, plastic bins, bedding, towels, and yep, winter clothes.
When we visited D over spring break, she said she was sharing summer storage with at least one friend but I don’t know if they found anything yet - or even started looking.
@suzy100 I’m thinking it all fit in the car going, it should fit going back because she hasn’t added much but a few books.
That said, who knows. She may have an internship there this summer and if so we might look into very short term storage.
I just plan on taking a slightly larger car than the one I had when I dropped D off.
When we visited two weeks ago, D had a LOT more stuff than last August/September. The biggest item is the refrigerator. But she also bought plastic storage bins and carts. With the roommate moving out over winter break, she has taken over the entire room (no new roommate). It’s not going to all fit in a Subaru Outback anymore.
let’s just say Amazon’s great for getting stuff TO my college child but not so great for taking stuff away.
My D will be putting pretty much everything in storage, except her summer clothes and laptop. Those she can come home. She is planning to come home with one suitcase and a carry-on for the summer (which is more than she brings home on break). She doesn’t need her lamp, refrigerator or bedding when she is at home. I’m sure there is more stuff now than she had on move-in day, too.
I envy you guys who can drive up with a van and pack everything up. I used to be one of you so I know how great that is. It definitely made college packing much easier for my girls.
Now almost everything has to be stored. Summer clothes, toothbrush, medications, a few books, laptop–that is all that’s coming home. Winter clothing, bedding, towels, toiletries, tea pot, refrigerator, lamps, posters, etc. ALL of that has to find a summer home! I sincerely hope she is working on that.
Mine will store everything except summer clothes, laptop, musical instrument, music if she doesn’t get an internship. If she gets and internship she will need sheets, blanket, towels, and alarm clock, so those won’t get stored. We are grateful for her roommate’s parents for offering the space.
The only extra thing is a fridge, and it is the smallest you can get, less than 2 cubic feet. His room is a mess at home, so we will need to go through it.
Mine wears the same in summer and winter, despite being in the Northeast. The only things extra for winter are boots, and he wore them a week ago when they had 2 inches of snow. Clearing snow is apparently not the college’s strong suit.
My D decided to apply for, and got, a summer job at her college helping coordinate summer camps, incoming tours, etc. It provides her room and board for the summer (no need to worry about storage) and she wants to keep saving up money. It means that she’s not coming home for the summer (sniff, sniff) but she’s enjoying her independence far too much at this point. She’s pretty happy she got the job, and I think it’ll be a good experience for her – lots of opportunity to practice interpersonal and management skills.
She felt it was better to apply for research internships after her sophomore year since she’ll have more knowledge under her belt and hopefully contribute more at an internship (or at least feel more confident).
Hey everyone, I’m glad all your kids are doing well. I’m doing pretty good. My classes are still going well… this programming class is quite the wild ride. We just got our 2nd exam back. Prior to that, I had a high C in the class, but the teacher said I was actually at an A because of how she curves (she bases it on whoever has the highest score in the class.) For the 2nd exam, the highest score was 78%. I was just a couple points below that (75%)! Seeing as she curves the class based on the highest score overall, it probably means that I’m still at a a high A. I never thought I’d be ecstatic over a C on a test, haha, but I guess it’s all relative.
Last night I watched a livestreamed concert at MIT in which DS’s a cappella group performed. Great fun; they had a cappella groups from all over the northeast, and he arranged and directed one his group’s pieces. And it was so neat to watch it live but sigh I’ll be glad when the kids get home. That’s still over a month away, though…
Meeting D now in NYC for her spring break. We’re going to see Waitress today. She is very excited. (And for those who may ask, no we couldn’t get tix to Hamilton.). She won’t be home again until after her summer internship which ends in August.
Not to brag or anything but D15 and D16 have tickets for Hamilton Memorial Day Weekend. They are extremely excited and I am extremely jealous. We love Hamilton at our house. And yes, we bought the tickets a long time ago and they were very expensive.
@mom23travelers…jealous too!
Question for all of you.
Over on the 2016 board it has been a month full of decisions and agonizing over decisions. Now that our kids are finishing up the first year is there any who really struggled to make a choice last year who is sorry now with the choice they made?
Good question, @mom23travelers ! D15 didn’t struggle with her decision but I did because her school is 3k miles and a 5-6 hour flight away. First semester was great, but this semester’s been tough due to a heavy course load and repeated bouts with illness (colds, strep, sinus infection, etc.). I find it very difficult when I get “those” calls!! Despite this, she still feels confident that she is in the right place but it has been harder than we thought it would be.
@mom23travelers – yes, it was a terrible struggle. We had a deposit paid to one school and then the admissions office from another school called. I wish they had never called. My D changed her mind based on that phone call, got her deposit back from the original school, and has had a miserable first year. She is now looking at schools to transfer to, but because her heart really wasn’t in the school where the first deposit was paid, that school is not a contender. I have no idea where she will end up next school year.
Hello dear parents of 2015 youngsters!
I am the OP (wonder how many will recognize me here ).
DD 2015 took a gap year after committing to Yale. She is currently living in Germany, travelling across Europe. She is a full blown adult there. I think it is going to be very hard for her to get back in to the very conservative old USA
But …she has grown so much while living abroad, and…I have grown so much not having her around, not even in the same country (those time zones are awful!) Looking forward to her return in mid June …just kidding, we will be visiting her in about three weeks, travelling where our food tastes take us . Can’t wait ! But will eagerly join the conversations about summer storage etc. (kidding again).
