All of my income is contract too - I get 1099s in some cases and report my “cash” earnings when the amount is too small to trigger the 1099.
Doesn’t your son have similar?

Was the income from each contract job less than $600? Then they might not have to issue a 1099. But if his total “self employment income” (since he wasn’t an employee) was over $400 he should file a tax return I believe.
@OHmomto2, hugs. Maybe you could visit her and take her out for a meal?
That might be it, yes, he made less than $600 and this year will likely make less than that.
They are paid cash usually, which makes it difficult to track. Now he is being very careful with it though, even though he doesn’t make much money.
If I make less than $600 on a particular job I don’t get a 1099 but I still have to declare the income on my return.
@mommdc I wish I could - she’s a 12 hour drive or 2 hour flight away, though.
@OHmomto2 Oh my, sorry, I was thinking she was much closer.
Well she called me just now and we chatted for a bit so I am better. Thanks @mommdc
@OHMomof2, I got your username wrong too.
Hi everybody! DD has been enjoying summer break so far, a little bored so times though since friends have jobs and significant others. But today she starts some hospital experience: shadowing a doctor today, and volunteer in ER tomorrow! Hopefully will be a good experience. She might look for study abroad next summer, so I am thankful to have her here this year!
I have DS back for another week before he leaves to go work at a summer camp. Right now all three (DD’14, DS’15, and DS’17) are playing a game together and listening to them banter makes me very happy. DS’15 had a great semester and finished with a 4.1 overall, which I can’t tell people IRL without being awkward so I’ll be inappropriately prideful here, confidentially.
Next summer he’ll be doing co-op somewhere. His dream co-op would be with JPL on the opposite side of the country so if he manages to get in there we won’t see much of him next year. I’ll enjoy every minute this year though.
It has been great having our daughter home for the past 5 weeks now! She can’t work here where we live overseas, but she has managed to keep her self busy with a lot of volunteer activities at a local school. She is always working on her music which I love hearing and doing some online study as well. She has also been putting some good effort into cooking and coming along quite nicely. She made a Thai dinner the other night that was almost restaurant like. Kids these days. Late next week we all travel together to the states, we have lots of fun things planned for our vacation there.
We have been enjoying every minute of having her home.
D recently started her internship and even though she’s still in the area, she’s not here at home any longer and I miss her. At least she’s close enough so that we can drive over to her occasionally and maybe we’ll even get to have some weekend visits. Meanwhile, she seems to be having a lot of fun.
It was nice to have D15 here for a month. She’s gone now for the summer, we might see her once or twice briefly. She reminded me to be happy that we raised her to be independent. Yes, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to have her around.
@mdcmom - nice news! Be loud and proud! We rejoice too with you!
D is in Cleveland for a two month internship. She just told me that everyone gets tomorrow off to attend the parade for the Cavaliers!! She is very excited, both to get the day off and to go to a big event parade.
We have to drive past Cleveland tomorrow on our trip west. We’re thinking we’ll get off 90 for a while and go around the city .
So as for my summer - I didn’t get a lifeguard job at home because I applied too late, but I have one for the fall when I get back to school. I’m taking one summer class (music appreciation), going swimming with my family, and helping with house cleaning. My boyfriend and I are still going strong. He’s staffing a Boy Scout camp currently and I just got my first letter from him yesterday. :x
Heading to the states tomorrow for almost 2 months. Looking forward to cooler weather, and less humidity. Weird feeling again today because I know my daughter won’t return with us at the end of the summer, but much easier this year compared to last year.
I hope you are headed somewhere cool @NorthernMom61! It’s really hot out west but I’m not complaining–I love it.
D is thoroughly enjoying her internship and even though I promised myself I’d just be happy for her and wouldn’t whine, I’m kind of whining to you all anyway that I’m not seeing quite as much of her as I’d hoped. We will have a couple of weeks after the internship ends before she goes back to school. To be honest, I hadn’t really wrapped my head around the fact that she’s actually going back to school. LOL.
This thread has been so quiet - how’s everyone doing? Hard to believe that summer for my S is about 2/3 over. We’re heading for transfer orientation and move-in a mere five weeks from now. Having a transfer student is like freshman year deja vu. Bet you’re glad you’re not going through this again! Although now I’m older, wiser…but mostly older.
